Chapter 46 - Family

The group was soon settled into their meal at Jeju Osung Traditional Restaurant, a space that felt both grand and grounded, with its high ceilings and warm wooden accents reflecting the island's heritage.

As they were seated, the table was quickly covered in an impressive spread: a massive, steaming pot of seafood stew featuring fresh octopus and abalone, surrounded by a dozen colorful banchan plates.

The aroma of the rich, spicy broth and grilled mackerel filled the air, immediately working to settle the morning's excitement into a comfortable hunger.

Cha Eun-soo naturally took the seat next to Hajun, her focus entirely on him as she began to expertly de-shell shrimp and portion out the softest pieces of fish.

She whispered to him about the different textures, feeding him whatever he seemed curious about, her movements patient and full of maternal warmth.

Jin-woo sat opposite them, taking on the role of the provider; he kept a sharp eye on everyone's needs, ordering additional servings of whatever Eun-soo even offhandedly mentioned.

In the midst of her caring for Hajun, Eun-soo felt a gentle weight on her plate and looked up to find Jin-woo placing a perfectly grilled piece of abalone there.

"Eat," he said simply, his voice low but firm. "You've been so busy feeding him that you haven't taken a bite yourself."

A soft blush touched Eun-soo's cheeks, and she instinctively reached out to place a serving of the spicy stew onto Jin-woo's plate in return.

Hajun, watching this silent exchange of care with his big, observant eyes, suddenly picked up a piece of rolled omelet with his small chopsticks and placed it on Jin-woo's plate too.

Jin-woo froze for a split second, his heart swelling at the rare, proactive gesture from his nephew, before he offered the boy a rare, soft smile.

The lunch was filled with the sound of shared laughter and the clinking of porcelain, the "matching" white and cream outfits of the leads making them look like the heart of a complete family.

However, in the middle of the lively meal, Hajun reached a bit too excitedly for a piece of the stew, and a small drop of the red sauce splashed onto the shoulder of Eun-soo's cream tunic.

"Oh! It's okay, Hajun-ah, don't worry," Eun-soo reassured the startled boy, quickly standing up to head toward the restroom hallway to dab the stain before it set.

Jin-woo rose immediately, his brow furrowed in concern as he pulled a fresh, white handkerchief from his pocket.

Inside the quiet hallway near the washrooms, he stepped close to her, his height towering over her as he reached out to help dab at the spot on her shoulder.

He was focused entirely on the stain, his movements precise and gentle, but he was so close that Eun-soo could feel the heat radiating from his chest.

As he worked, his face ended up inches from her neck; the clean, sharp scent of his shampoo mingled with the faint jasmine of her skin.

Eun-soo's fingers fidgeted unconsciously against the fabric of her jeans, her breath hitching in her throat, but she didn't move away.

She stayed perfectly still, trapped in the gravity of his presence, while Jin-woo, usually so logical, found himself lingering on the task just a second too long.

The silence between them in that hallway was heavy, no longer just the silence of a teacher and a parent, but the electric tension of two people who had stopped being strangers long ago.

Jin-woo finally pulled back, his eyes meeting hers for a lingering second before he cleared his throat. "It's... mostly gone. We should head back to the table."

Eun-soo could only nod, her face flushed as they returned to the dining room, where his parents were watching them with knowing, subtle smiles.
