Chapter 208 - Chapter 208 : No One Is Above the Law

Peace brought prosperity.

Prosperity brought opportunity.

And opportunity—

brought greed.

Kaien knew that long before anyone else realized it.

History had taught him that lesson repeatedly.

Not once.

Not twice.

Across multiple lives.

As Karna, he had watched powerful men abuse authority because they believed their status protected them.

As Aditya, he had seen people place personal gain above the survival of entire nations.

As Arin, he had witnessed fear and desperation push individuals toward selfish decisions that harmed everyone around them.

Human nature never changed completely.

It only changed circumstances.

Which was exactly why Kaien spent so much time personally reviewing reports despite everyone constantly telling him to delegate more responsibilities.

Some dangers announced themselves openly.

Others hid inside paperwork.

The discovery happened almost accidentally.

A routine report from one of the western expansion territories caught his attention.

Nothing seemed unusual initially.

Resource allocations.

Construction schedules.

Settlement budgets.

Normal administrative documents.

Yet something about the numbers bothered him.

Kaien couldn't explain it immediately.

The figures looked correct.

The signatures were valid.

Everything appeared legitimate.

But years of command had sharpened instincts that rarely failed him.

Something was wrong.

Three days later he personally requested records from the previous two years.

That request alone caused panic among several regional administrators.

Not enough panic to be obvious.

But enough for Kaien to notice.

Which only made him investigate further.

The deeper he looked, the uglier the situation became.

Several high-ranking officers and administrators had quietly created a network benefiting themselves through reconstruction projects.

Nothing dramatic.

Nothing that would immediately cripple humanity.

That was what made it dangerous.

Small thefts.

Small manipulations.

Small favors exchanged between powerful individuals.

Construction contracts redirected toward family members.

Resources allocated unfairly.

Settlement funding adjusted based on personal relationships.

Over time those small actions accumulated into something much larger.

A system.

Kaien spent nearly a week investigating personally.

He said nothing.

Made no accusations.

Allowed nobody to know what he had discovered.

Not even Nyra and Lyss initially.

He wanted proof.

Absolute proof.

Because if he acted without certainty, people would claim bias.

Politics.

Personal grudges.

Anything except the truth.

Kaien intended to leave them no room to argue.

When the evidence finally reached his desk, the room became silent.

Nyra stood nearby reading through several files.

The further she read, the colder her expression became.

Lyss wasn't much different.

"This much?"

Nyra asked quietly.

Kaien nodded.

Neither woman spoke afterward.

Because they both understood what this meant.

The people involved weren't low-ranking officials.

They were important.

Very important.

Several of them had played major roles during reconstruction.

Others were respected military officers.

One was even responsible for overseeing expansion projects across three territories.

Removing them would create problems.

Serious problems.

Nyra finally looked toward him.

"What are you going to do?"

Kaien's answer came immediately.

"The same thing I'd do to anyone else."

The emergency council session was called the following morning.

Nobody knew why.

Only that Kaien himself had requested full attendance.

That alone made people nervous.

Because Kaien rarely called emergency meetings.

And when he did—

something important always followed.

The chamber filled quickly.

Council members.

Military commanders.

Regional administrators.

Department heads.

Nearly everyone with significant authority arrived.

Many of the guilty individuals sat among them confidently.

Unaware.

Still believing themselves untouchable.

Kaien entered last.

The room immediately fell silent.

Not because he looked angry.

Quite the opposite.

His face revealed absolutely nothing.

And somehow that was worse.

He reached the center of the chamber before speaking.

"I'll keep this brief."

His calm voice echoed throughout the room.

Several people exchanged confused glances.

Others waited patiently.

"For the past several months, I've been investigating corruption within Dominion's reconstruction programs."

Silence.

Immediate silence.

The atmosphere changed instantly.

Not everyone reacted.

But some did.

Kaien noticed every single one.

He continued.

"I discovered multiple individuals abusing their authority for personal gain."

Several faces paled.

Others remained calm.

Still hoping.

Still believing they could explain themselves.

Then Kaien activated the central display.

Thousands of documents appeared.

Financial records.

Communications.

Transfer orders.

Contracts.

Evidence.

An overwhelming amount of evidence.

The chamber erupted immediately.

Arguments.

Questions.

Denials.

Accusations.

Everyone speaking at once.

Kaien allowed it for exactly twenty seconds.

Then he slammed his hand against the table.

The sound echoed throughout the chamber.

Instant silence followed.

"No."

His voice remained calm.

But nobody dared interrupt.

Not a single person.

"I spent a week verifying every document personally."

The displays continued floating around the chamber.

"Including financial transfers."

"Private communications."

"Unauthorized contracts."

"Misappropriated resources."

He looked directly toward several individuals seated near the front.

"They're all real."

One officer finally stood.

A highly respected commander.

Someone who had fought during the final war.

Someone many considered irreplaceable.

"Director Veyr—"

Kaien cut him off immediately.

"Sit down."

The officer froze.

The entire chamber felt the pressure in Kaien's voice.

Not supernatural pressure.

Not power.

Authority.

Pure authority.

"You used your position to enrich yourself while civilians waited for housing."

The officer opened his mouth.

Then closed it.

Because the evidence floating above them spoke louder than any defense he could offer.

Another administrator stood.

"We helped rebuild this civilization."

His tone carried frustration.

"We sacrificed years of our lives."

Several others nodded.

Clearly hoping that argument would save them.

Kaien stared at them.

For several seconds he said nothing.

Then he finally spoke.

"And?"

The room froze.

The administrator blinked.

Clearly not expecting that response.

Kaien's eyes never left him.

"You think helping humanity gives you permission to steal from it afterward?"

Silence.

"You think your achievements place you above accountability?"

Still silence.

The chamber felt colder somehow.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Because everyone present understood something important.

Kaien wasn't negotiating.

His gaze swept across the room.

"You fought in the war."

His voice remained calm.

"You helped rebuild civilization."

"You served humanity."

He nodded once.

"And for those things, you deserved respect."

Then his expression hardened.

"But the moment you used that respect for personal gain..."

The silence became absolute.

"...you lost it."

Nobody argued after that.

Nobody could.

The verdict came swiftly.

Removal from office.

Immediate termination of authority.

Full investigations.

Asset seizures where necessary.

Criminal proceedings for the worst offenders.

No exceptions.

Several council members privately objected afterward.

Not because they disagreed.

Because they worried.

The individuals being removed were important.

Experienced.

Influential.

Replacing them wouldn't be easy.

One senior advisor finally voiced the concern openly after the meeting.

"Humanity needs people like them."

Kaien looked toward him.

"No."

The advisor hesitated.

Kaien continued.

"Humanity needs people it can trust."

Word spread quickly.

Faster than anyone expected.

Within days the entire nation knew what happened.

Many citizens were shocked.

Others weren't.

But almost everyone reached the same conclusion.

Kaien meant what he said.

No exceptions.

No favorites.

No protected class.

Not heroes.

Not commanders.

Not politicians.

Not even people who had helped save the world.

That evening Kaien stood on the balcony outside his residence watching the city below.

The sun was setting beyond Novaris.

Warm golden light covered the streets.

People moved through the city peacefully.

Unaware of how close corruption had come to taking root.

Nyra joined him first.

Lyss followed shortly afterward.

For a while none of them spoke.

Eventually Lyss broke the silence.

"Do you think they hate you now?"

Kaien already knew who she meant.

The officials.

The officers.

The people he had removed.

"Probably."

His answer came easily.

Without regret.

Nyra studied him.

"You don't seem bothered."

Kaien looked toward the city.

Toward the people living their lives.

Toward the future they were trying to build.

Then he answered quietly.

"In every life..."

His voice carried the weight of countless memories.

"As Karna."

"As Aditya."

"As Arin."

"And now as Kaien."

He remained silent briefly.

"I've learned something."

The twins waited.

Listening.

"The moment a leader becomes afraid of losing support..."

The wind moved gently through the evening air.

"...they start compromising principles."

His eyes remained fixed on the city below.

"And the moment that happens..."

A faint hardness entered his voice.

"...they stop being worthy of leading anyone."

The three stood together in silence afterward.

Watching the lights of Novaris slowly appear one by one.

And somewhere throughout the city, people slept peacefully.

Unaware that earlier that day, their leader had removed some of the most powerful individuals in the nation.

Not because it was easy.

Not because it was popular.

But because for Kaien Veyr—

peace wasn't something protected only on battlefields.

Sometimes it was protected in council chambers.

One difficult decision at a time.
