Chapter 199 - Chapter 199 : A World After War

The city felt unfamiliar.

Not because Novaris had changed completely.

But because for the first time in Kaien Veyr's memory—

it no longer carried the weight of imminent destruction.

That constant pressure lingering in the air for years had vanished entirely.

No emergency sirens echoed through the streets.

No military alerts interrupted daily life every few minutes.

No distant artillery fire trembled through the walls reminding everyone that the world outside remained hostile.

The war was truly over.

And humanity still didn't fully know how to live without it.

Kaien stepped outside his home slowly beneath clear morning skies while sunlight illuminated the city peacefully above him.

The air felt strangely calm.

Warm winds passed through the streets carrying the scent of rebuilding efforts, smoke from repair sectors, and something else unfamiliar.

Hope.

Nyra and Lyss walked beside him quietly while several Dominion soldiers stationed nearby immediately straightened seeing him appear.

Some saluted instinctively.

Others simply stared.

Kaien noticed immediately how differently people looked at him now.

Not merely respect.

Reverence.

Like they were staring at something larger than human.

He honestly didn't know how to feel about that yet.

The streets outside remained crowded despite the visible destruction across several city sectors.

Buildings damaged during the Entity's assault still stood partially collapsed while military drones moved constantly between repair zones carrying supplies and reconstruction materials. Entire streets had been converted temporarily into medical centers and refugee housing after the final battle.

Yet despite all the damage—

people smiled.

That was the strangest part.

Workers repairing shattered roads laughed while speaking to one another. Children ran through open streets without fear while merchants reopened damaged storefronts with whatever remained of their inventory.

Life had returned almost immediately after the war ended.

Humanity really was terrifyingly resilient.

Kaien walked silently through the city afterward while observing everything around him carefully.

Novaris had survived.

Barely.

Several outer districts had been completely destroyed during the final battle while eastern defense sectors remained almost unrecognizable from the sheer scale of the war. Massive fractures across nearby wastelands still scarred the earth itself where Kaien and the Entity clashed repeatedly.

Some damage might never fully disappear.

But humanity remained alive.

And that mattered more than anything.

As Kaien continued walking, people slowly began recognizing him more frequently.

Whispers spread quietly through the streets.

"That's him…"

"Kaien Veyr…"

"The one who defeated the Entity…"

Several people stopped what they were doing entirely just to watch him pass. Some lowered their heads respectfully while others looked toward him with visible awe.

One older woman suddenly stepped forward afterward holding the hand of a small child.

Kaien paused instinctively.

The woman looked nervous even approaching him.

Then quietly said,

"My son survived because of the armor you made."

Kaien blinked once.

The woman continued softly afterward.

"He was stationed at the western front."

Her voice shook slightly.

"They told us nobody there should've survived after the manifestation breach… but he did."

The older woman lowered her head afterward.

"Thank you."

Kaien didn't answer immediately.

Because after years of endless fighting, countless battles, and carrying entire worlds upon his shoulders—

simple gratitude somehow felt heavier than war itself.

He finally nodded quietly afterward.

The woman smiled faintly before walking away with the child.

The little boy kept staring back toward Kaien the entire time afterward with wide amazed eyes.

Nyra watched him silently afterward while they continued walking.

"You still look uncomfortable."

Kaien glanced toward her briefly.

"With what?"

"People treating you like a legend."

Kaien remained quiet for several moments afterward before answering honestly.

"…I don't know how to act around it."

Lyss laughed softly beside him.

"That's because you still think like a soldier."

Kaien looked ahead toward the city again afterward.

Maybe she was right.

Even after everything—

he still didn't truly see himself the way humanity now saw him.

To everyone else he had become the savior of mankind.

The warrior who ended the final war.

The living reincarnation of Karna himself.

But inside—

he still felt like the same person carrying endless memories from countless painful lives.

Still exhausted.

Still uncertain.

Still searching for answers he hadn't fully found yet.

They eventually reached one of Novaris's higher observation sectors afterward overlooking the outer wastelands beyond the city.

Kaien stopped walking briefly seeing the view ahead.

The world outside had changed completely.

The old battlefield stretched endlessly across the horizon scarred by gigantic craters, fractured earth, and collapsed manifestation zones. Entire regions previously inaccessible because of corruption now stood open beneath clear skies for the first time in decades.

No darkness remained.

No manifestation storms.

No corrupted zones swallowing entire regions whole.

Just land.

Untouched land.

Nyra leaned lightly against the observation railing afterward while looking outward herself.

"Scouting divisions already started exploring outside sectors."

Kaien glanced toward her quietly.

"Find anything?"

"Resources mostly."

Lyss answered afterward.

"And habitable zones."

Kaien looked outward silently again.

Humanity had spent so long trapped behind fortified Dominion cities that most people forgot how massive the world truly was outside their walls.

Now suddenly—

all those places were reachable again.

"The council's already discussing expansion plans," Nyra continued afterward.

"Some want to rebuild damaged cities first."

"Others think humanity should spread outward immediately before political conflicts start."

Kaien sighed softly afterward.

"Political conflicts already started, didn't they?"

Lyss and Nyra exchanged looks immediately.

That answer alone told him enough.

Kaien almost smiled tiredly afterward.

Humanity survived extinction for barely a week before returning to arguing over territory and decisions.

Some things never changed.

Still—

the discussions made sense.

The world after the war remained uncertain.

Entire regions outside Dominion territory were now available for exploration. Resources once impossible to access safely could completely reshape civilization. Several military leaders wanted rapid expansion while others feared humanity moving too quickly after barely surviving extinction.

There were also questions nobody fully knew how to answer yet.

What would happen to the military system now?

Would children still be trained for war from early ages?

Could humanity even return to normal education and ordinary life after generations raised solely for survival?

The war ended.

But rebuilding civilization itself might take even longer.

Kaien remained standing quietly overlooking the wastelands afterward while sunlight reflected softly across his golden Kundalas.

The divine armor no longer radiated overwhelming pressure like during the battle, but its presence remained visible beneath his clothing occasionally through faint traces of golden light.

Complete.

For the first time in countless lives—

he truly felt complete.

Vijaya had returned.

Kavach and Kundala returned.

His memories remained intact.

And yet…

something inside him still felt unsettled.

Not dangerous.

Just unfinished somehow.

Like a part of his journey still waited somewhere beyond this peace.

Kaien frowned slightly afterward.

Nyra noticed immediately.

"What is it?"

He stayed silent briefly before answering.

"…Nothing."

But even as he said it—

he knew that wasn't entirely true.

Far below the observation platform, workers continued clearing ruined sectors while reconstruction teams moved throughout the city endlessly.

Life moved forward quickly.

Dominion soldiers removed old barricades from several streets already while supply transports entered the city from newly secured regions outside the walls.

The world had started rebuilding itself almost immediately after surviving annihilation.

And standing there watching it happen—

Kaien finally realized something strange.

He didn't know what came next for him anymore.

For years his existence revolved entirely around survival and war.

Every choice.

Every battle.

Every sacrifice.

Everything aimed toward defeating the Entity and protecting humanity.

Now though—

that purpose was gone.

And somehow that uncertainty frightened him more than battle ever did.

Lyss suddenly stepped beside him afterward before lightly resting her head against his shoulder.

Nyra joined moments later on his other side silently.

Neither said anything immediately.

They simply stood there together overlooking the recovering world beneath peaceful skies.

Then Nyra quietly spoke afterward.

"You know…"

Kaien glanced toward her slightly.

"For the first time…"

A faint smile appeared on her face while warm sunlight reflected across her eyes.

"…we can actually think about tomorrow."

Kaien looked outward toward the endless horizon again afterward.

The battlefield was gone.

The darkness was gone.

And beyond the ruined wastelands stretching ahead—

an entirely new world waited for humanity.
