Chapter 51 - Chapter 51 : The Quiet Between Two Worlds

The palace had never felt this calm.

Not after war.

Not after fear.

Not after someone like him existed within it.

Aditya stood by the balcony, looking over the kingdom.

Rebuilt.

Alive.

Moving as if nothing had almost ended it.

"You're thinking too much again."

Mira's voice came from behind him.

Casual.

Unbothered.

He didn't turn.

"…I don't think enough."

She walked up beside him, leaning against the railing like she belonged there.

"That's worse," she said. "People who don't think usually break things."

A faint exhale left him.

"…I fix things."

Mira smirked slightly.

"Same difference sometimes."

Silence settled, but it wasn't empty.

Below, people moved through the streets.

Normal life.

Unaffected on the surface.

"…they're not afraid right now," Aditya said.

"They will be again," Mira replied.

He glanced at her.

"You say that like it's certain."

"It is," she said. "People don't stay calm around things they don't understand."

"…and you?"

She met his gaze.

"I already decided not to try understanding you."

He frowned slightly.

"That doesn't make sense."

"It does," she said. "If I try to understand everything about you, I'll end up seeing what everyone else sees."

A pause.

"I don't want that."

The words lingered longer than they should have.

Aditya looked away first.

"…you're strange."

She smiled faintly.

"I've been told worse."

The wind picked up slightly, soft and natural.

For once, it didn't react to him.

He leaned forward slightly against the railing.

"…why did you stay?"

Mira didn't answer immediately.

Then—

"Because you looked like someone who didn't want to be alone."

He froze for just a fraction of a second.

"…I wasn't."

She shrugged.

"You were."

Another pause.

"…you still are."

This time—

he didn't deny it.

The space between them shifted.

Not distant.

Not close.

Something in between.

Mira pushed herself off the railing.

"Come with me."

He looked at her.

"…where?"

"You'll see."

They walked through the palace halls.

No guards stopped them.

No one questioned.

But everyone watched.

Whispers followed.

Eyes lingered.

Not on Mira.

On him.

Aditya noticed.

"…they're still afraid."

Mira didn't slow down.

"Let them be."

"That doesn't bother you?"

She glanced back at him.

"Should it?"

He didn't answer.

They stepped outside.

Past the gates.

Into the city.

This time—

the distance was obvious.

People moved aside.

Cleared paths.

Lowered their gaze.

No one came close.

Aditya stopped walking.

"…this is why."

Mira turned around.

"Why what?"

"…why I shouldn't be here."

She walked back toward him.

Close.

Closer than anyone else dared to stand.

"You're wrong."

"…how?"

She looked up at him.

"Because you're still here anyway."

The answer was simple.

Too simple.

"…that doesn't change anything."

"It does," she said. "You're choosing to stay."

A pause.

"That matters more than what they think."

He looked at her, longer this time.

"…you really don't care."

She shook her head.

"No."

Then—

after a second—

"…but I care about you staying."

The words slipped out naturally.

Not forced.

Not planned.

And for the first time—

Aditya didn't know what to say.

The world had tried to break him.

Control him.

Erase him.

Nothing had worked.

But this—

This quiet, honest moment—

Left him still.

Mira seemed to realize what she said a second too late.

"…I mean—"

She stopped.

Then sighed lightly.

"…you get what I mean."

A faint smile appeared on his face.

Actually this time.

"…I think I do."

She blinked.

Then looked away.

"…don't make it weird."

"I'm not."

"You are."

"I'm not."

She exhaled, half annoyed, half amused.

"See? This is why people shouldn't treat you like a god."

"…why?"

"Because you're clearly not one."

The smile didn't fade.

"…good."

She glanced at him again.

"…yeah."

This time—

she smiled too.

And for a moment—

the world didn't feel heavy.

Didn't feel broken.

Didn't feel like something that needed to be fixed.

Just something that existed.

And for once—

Aditya Varma didn't feel like he had to carry it alone.
