Chapter 44 - Between Layers

There was no impact.

No ground.

No sense of falling ending.

Just… absence.

And then

something else.

Adrián didn't land.

He existed.

That was the closest thing to it.

No floor beneath him.

No walls around him.

No air pressing against his skin.

Just space.

Endless.

Flat.

And wrong.

The observer's voice came through

but distorted.

"…can you …hear… this?"

Fragments.

Broken.

Like sound itself wasn't stable here.

Adrián didn't answer immediately.

Because answering required orientation.

And orientation didn't exist.

Up wasn't up.

Down wasn't down.

Distance wasn't measurable.

Everything felt equally close.

And infinitely far.

The others were there.

He could feel them.

Not see them clearly.

Not consistently.

Just… presence.

Like points that shifted in and out of alignment.

The lone participant flickered into view for a second.

Then vanished again.

Not gone.

Just… not currently visible.

The observer appeared next.

Half-formed.

Edges blurred.

"…this is not normal."

That much was obvious.

The system didn't speak.

Not even fragmented.

Not even broken.

It was gone.

Completely.

Whatever this place was…

it wasn't part of it.

Adrián moved.

Or tried to.

The concept of movement didn't translate cleanly.

He thought forward

and his position shifted.

Not smoothly.

Not predictably.

Just… different.

The space didn't react.

Didn't resist.

Didn't stabilize.

It simply allowed it.

That alone was unsettling.

Because everything before had rules.

Even broken ones.

This had none.

The observer's voice stabilized slightly.

"…okay… okay, I can see you now."

Adrián looked toward the sound.

The observer flickered into focus.

Still unstable.

But more defined than before.

"…where are we?"

"I don't know."

For once, that wasn't strategy.

It was fact.

The lone participant appeared again.

Further away this time.

Or maybe closer.

Distance didn't mean anything here.

"…this isn't a zone," they said.

Quiet.

Controlled.

"This is… outside."

That word mattered.

Outside what?

The system?

The structure?

Reality as they understood it?

Adrián focused.

Not on movement.

On perception.

Trying to anchor something.

Anything.

And that's when he noticed it.

A pattern.

Not visual.

Not physical.

Conceptual.

A faint structure beneath the emptiness.

Like layers.

Stacked.

Misaligned.

And they were… between them.

The desync reacted immediately.

Stronger than before.

Not conflicting.

Aligning.

For the first time…

it felt… natural.

Like this state…

fit him better than the system ever had.

The observer flinched.

"…something just changed."

"Yes."

Adrián's voice was steadier now.

More grounded.

Despite the lack of ground.

"It's not resisting anymore."

That was the difference.

Before, everything had pushed back.

Tried to stabilize.

Tried to correct.

Here?

Nothing did.

The space accepted inconsistency.

Allowed it.

Which meant…

he wasn't a problem here.

The lone participant's gaze locked onto him.

Even through the distortion.

"…this place isn't rejecting you."

No.

It wasn't.

If anything…

it was closer to him than anything else so far.

That realization settled heavily.

Because that raised a new question.

If this place accepted him…

what did that make it?

The space shifted.

Not violently.

Not abruptly.

Just… subtly.

Like attention moving.

Not from the system.

Something else.

Something deeper.

Adrián felt it before he saw it.

A presence.

Not distant.

Not close.

Just… there.

Watching.

Evaluating.

The same feeling as before.

But clearer now.

Stronger.

The observer stiffened.

"…you feel that, right?"

"Yes."

No hesitation.

No doubt.

The lone participant didn't speak.

But their posture changed.

Tense.

Alert.

Focused.

Because whatever this was…

it wasn't passive.

It wasn't neutral.

It was aware.

The space shifted again.

And this time

something appeared.

Not fully formed.

Not stable.

Just a shape.

Rough.

Undefined.

Like reality trying to render something it didn't understand.

Adrián didn't move.

Didn't step back.

Didn't prepare.

Because that wouldn't apply here.

The shape flickered.

Adjusted.

Stabilized slightly.

And then

it looked at him.

Not with eyes.

Not physically.

But the focus was unmistakable.

The observer whispered.

"…that's not a player."

"No."

Adrián's voice was quiet.

Because now he understood.

This wasn't something inside the system.

This was something outside it.

Something that had been watching all along.

The shape shifted again.

More defined now.

Still incomplete.

Still unstable.

But closer to… something recognizable.

And then

it spoke.

Not through sound.

Not through language.

Directly.

Into thought.

[You are not aligned.]

The message hit instantly.

Clear.

Absolute.

Adrián didn't respond right away.

Because this wasn't communication as he knew it.

This was… direct exchange.

No distortion.

No misinterpretation.

Just meaning.

The observer flinched.

"…did you just "

"Yes."

Adrián's eyes stayed locked on the shape.

Because this mattered.

More than anything so far.

This was the first thing that wasn't system.

Wasn't human.

And was choosing to interact.

The presence shifted slightly.

[You deviate.]

Another statement.

Not accusation.

Not judgment.

Just… fact.

Adrián tilted his head slightly.

Not in confusion.

In acknowledgment.

"Yes."

The response felt different.

Not spoken.

Not thought.

Shared.

The space reacted subtly.

Not violently.

Not unstable.

Just… aware.

The presence paused.

Processing.

Evaluating.

Then

[You persist.]

That word carried weight.

More than the others.

Because it implied something important.

Not just existence.

Continuity.

Against resistance.

Against correction.

Against structure.

Adrián didn't deny it.

"I do."

Another pause.

Longer this time.

The space seemed to… lean in.

Not physically.

Conceptually.

Closer.

Then

the next message came.

Different.

Less certain.

[You are… not contained.]

That was new.

Not a statement of observation.

A statement of limitation.

The observer swallowed.

"…that doesn't sound good."

No.

It didn't.

Because if something like this…

couldn't contain him…

Then what exactly had he become?

Adrián held its attention.

Didn't look away.

Didn't hesitate.

Because this moment mattered.

More than anything before.

And then

he asked the only question that mattered now.

"What am I?"

The space went still.

Completely.

The presence didn't respond immediately.

For the first time…

there was delay.

Real delay.

Then

finally

it answered.

[Unresolved.]

Silence followed.

Heavy.

Endless.

Because that wasn't just an answer.

It was a warning.

And something else beneath it.

Something far more dangerous.

A possibility.

That whatever Adrián was becoming…

had never existed before.
