Chapter 40 - Expanding Parameters

The surface didn't stop.

It pulsed again.

Stronger this time.

Not just visual.

Physical.

The air shifted.

Pressure built in the chamber like something massive had just taken a breath.

Everyone felt it.

The cautious pair stepped back immediately.

The lone participant didn't even try to hide it this time.

Fear.

Pure and direct.

"…that's bad," the observer whispered.

Adrián didn't answer.

Because he already knew.

The text on the surface flickered violently now.

Unstable.

Like it was struggling to maintain form.

[???]

Expanding parameters

The words stretched.

Distorted.

Then snapped back into place.

But something was wrong.

They weren't static anymore.

They were… adapting.

Rewriting themselves in real time.

Adrián's gaze sharpened.

Because that meant one thing.

This wasn't pre-coded.

This wasn't a system script.

This was processing input.

Live.

And the input…

was him.

The surface shifted again.

The ripple spread wider this time.

Across the entire structure.

Then beyond it.

Into the air.

Invisible at first.

But perceptible.

The desync inside Adrián reacted immediately.

Not passively.

Not like before.

It pushed back.

For a fraction of a second

his vision split.

Two overlapping realities.

One stable.

One slightly… displaced.

Then they snapped together again.

Gone.

But real.

The observer grabbed his arm instinctively.

"…what was that?"

"Adjustment."

Adrián's voice was quieter now.

More focused.

Because this wasn't random anymore.

This was interaction.

The system had stopped controlling things.

But something else had started learning.

The surface flickered again.

New text forced its way through the distortion.

[???]

Variable exceeds baseline

A pause.

Then

[???]

Recalibrating environment

The floor shifted.

Not violently.

Not dramatically.

Just enough to break balance.

Everyone staggered.

Even Adrián.

The chamber… changed.

Subtly.

Angles adjusted.

Distances stretched.

The far wall felt further away.

The space felt deeper.

Bigger.

Wrong.

The observer steadied himself.

"…it's changing the room."

"Yes."

Adrián's eyes moved slowly across the space.

Tracking.

Measuring.

"It's trying to compensate."

"For what?"

A beat.

"For me."

That landed.

Hard.

Because now it was obvious.

This wasn't random distortion.

This was adaptation.

The environment was being altered to contain something it didn't understand.

The others felt it too.

Not intellectually.

Instinctively.

The cautious pair moved further back.

Almost to the edge of the chamber.

Creating distance.

As much as possible.

The lone participant hesitated

then followed.

No one wanted to be near the center anymore.

Near him.

The observer exhaled sharply.

"…yeah, I officially don't like this."

The surface pulsed again.

Faster now.

The text updated.

[???]

Stability failure detected

A pause.

Then

[???]

Applying constraints

Adrián moved before it finished.

Not reacting to the words.

To the intent behind them.

Because "constraints" meant control.

And control meant… interference.

He stepped back.

Fast.

Pulling away from the structure.

The observer stumbled after him.

"…hey, what "

The space snapped.

A sharp distortion cut through the chamber.

For a fraction of a second

the area where Adrián had been standing collapsed inward.

Not visually.

Conceptually.

Like space itself had tried to compress him into a fixed point.

And failed.

The distortion unraveled instantly.

But the message was clear.

The system

or whatever this was

had just tried to force alignment.

And it hadn't worked.

The text flickered violently.

[???]

Constraint rejected

Silence hit.

Heavy.

Absolute.

Then

everything escalated.

The chamber warped.

Not subtly this time.

Walls bent.

Angles shifted sharply.

The floor tilted just enough to destabilize everyone again.

The air pressure spiked.

The observer dropped to one knee.

"…okay, that's REALLY bad."

Adrián stayed standing.

Barely.

But stable.

Because the desync inside him wasn't resisting anymore.

It was… matching.

For a moment

he felt it clearly.

The misalignment wasn't a flaw.

It was an alternative state.

And this environment…

was failing to lock it down.

The surface pulsed violently.

The text fragmented.

[???]

Reclassification required

[???]

Entity does not conform

A pause.

Then

[???]

Escalating response

The chamber reacted instantly.

The space tightened.

Not physically.

But perceptually.

Like everything was closing in at once.

Pressure.

Weight.

Restriction.

Not targeting everyone.

Targeting him.

Adrián's breathing slowed.

Deliberate.

Controlled.

Because panic would make it worse.

This wasn't something he could overpower.

Or outmaneuver.

This was something he had to… exist through.

The observer looked up at him.

Eyes wide.

"…it's focusing on you."

"I know."

A step forward.

Into it.

Not away.

The pressure spiked instantly.

The space resisted his movement.

Like walking through something thick.

Dense.

But he didn't stop.

Because retreat would confirm instability.

Advance forced adaptation.

The surface flickered wildly.

[???]

Response ineffective

Another step.

Closer.

The chamber distorted harder.

But it couldn't stop him.

Not completely.

The others watched in silence.

Frozen.

Because this wasn't normal anymore.

This wasn't survival behavior.

This was something else entirely.

Adrián reached the structure again.

Closer than before.

Closer than it wanted him to be.

The pressure peaked.

The entire space strained.

Then

he placed his hand on it again.

This time, the reaction was immediate.

Violent.

The surface flared.

The distortion surged outward like a shockwave.

The observer was thrown back.

The others staggered violently.

The chamber screamed.

Not a sound.

A structural failure.

The text exploded across the surface.

Unreadable for a moment

then it stabilized.

Clear.

Sharp.

Different.

[???]

New classification assigned

A pause.

Long enough for everyone to feel it.

Then

the final line appeared.

[???]

Designation: External Variable

Everything stopped.

Instantly.

No pressure.

No distortion.

No movement.

The chamber stabilized.

Perfectly.

Like nothing had happened.

The observer slowly pushed himself up.

"…external… what?"

No one answered.

Because they all understood one thing.

At least on instinct.

Adrián was no longer part of the system.

Not fully.

Not correctly.

Something had just acknowledged it.

Defined it.

And now…

it would have to decide what to do with it.
