The air in the laboratory was a sharp mixture of cold antiseptic and the ozone of overclocked server banks.
Kaelen Thorne took his first real step on the tiled floor.
His legs felt like brittle glass and his muscles were screaming in a language of atrophy that had no translation in the simulation.
Ten years of immobility had turned his body into a hollow shell.
But his mind was a supernova of cold logic.
Lia Sinclair stood beside him her violet eyes scanning the rows of glowing pods.
She was no longer a sprite of mana.
She was a composite of nanomachines and biological matter that she had literally 'pulled' through the neural interface during Kaelen's audit.
She looked like a girl made of liquid obsidian and starlight.
"Mr. Thorne" she whispered her voice sounding more like a digital recording than a human throat.
"This world... it feels heavy."
"Gravity is the only law that doesn't charge interest Lia" Kaelen replied his voice a dry rasp.
He looked at his wrist.
The golden thread was pulsing a rhythmic crimson.
It snaked across the floor disappearing into the pod labeled SUBJECT 000: PROJECT LEAD.
The voice from the intercom let out a low amused chuckle.
"I must admit Kaelen I didn't think you'd be able to manifest your 'Variables' into the physical plane."
"That requires a level of Narrative Authority that usually crashes the brain of the subject."
Kaelen walked toward the pod his bare feet leaving bloody prints on the white floor.
"It didn't crash my brain because I didn't treat it as magic" Kaelen said.
"I treated the simulation as a Long-Term Asset Lease."
"And when a lease ends the tenant has the right to take their personal property with them."
Kaelen reached the pod and placed his hand on the reinforced glass.
Inside the pod sat a man who looked younger than Kaelen had expected.
He had sharp features and a head of perfectly groomed white hair.
His name tag inside the pod read: DR. ADRIAN VANE.
Adrian's eyes were closed but his brain activity was displayed on a screen above his head.
He was 'Logged In' to a different sector.
"You call yourself a doctor Adrian" Kaelen said his eyes narrowing.
"But your balance sheet tells a different story."
"Vane Industries has been using the 'Coma Patients' of the First Gate incident to build a predictive market engine."
"You weren't trying to wake us up."
"You were using our collective trauma to Short the Global Economy."
The intercom went silent for a moment.
The hum of the servers intensified as the building's AI tried to process the accusation.
"It was a necessary sacrifice Kaelen" Adrian's voice returned but this time it was coming from a speaker inside the pod.
"The real world is dying."
"The mana gates weren't just a fantasy event."
"They were a Resource Incursion from a higher dimension."
"Earth was bankrupt long before I put you in that pod."
"I just gave you a place to thrive while I tried to balance the books of reality."
Kaelen Thorne let out a short cold laugh.
"You didn't give me a place to thrive Adrian."
"You gave me a Toxic Debt."
"You allowed me to suffer the apocalypse ten thousand times just to see how I would manage the 'Liquidation'."
Kaelen grabbed the silver pen he had taken from Elena Vance.
He didn't use it on the glass.
He used it to tap the terminal on the side of Adrian's pod.
"You think you're the CEO of this reality?" Kaelen asked.
"But I've been reviewing the Corporate Charter of Vane Industries."
"And I've found a very interesting clause in the 'Emergency Management' section."
Adrian Vane's heartbeat monitor on the screen began to spike.
"What are you doing Kaelen?"
"I'm filing for a Hostile Board Takeover" Kaelen said his fingers flying across the keypad.
"According to the bylaws of your own company if the CEO is 'Incapacitated' or 'Lost in a Simulation' for more than 48 hours the largest shareholder takes control."
"And who do you think is the largest shareholder Adrian?"
"I own 80% of the stock!" Adrian roared.
"You owned it" Kaelen corrected.
"But thirty seconds ago I leaked the Audit of the Abyss to the World Bank."
"I proved that your 'Predictive AI' was actually an illegal exploitation of human souls."
"The World Hero Association the real one has just initiated a Global Asset Freeze on Vane Industries."
"Your shares are currently worth less than the paper they are printed on."
[SYSTEM MESSAGE: REAL WORLD INTERFACE]
[NOTICE: RECLASSIFYING DR. ADRIAN VANE AS AN 'INSOLVENT DEBTOR']
[STATUS: INITIATING RECOVERY OF UNPAID EMOTIONAL LABOR]
Suddenly the lights in the lab turned a deep red.
The pods began to hiss as the life support systems were diverted to the main server.
"You're killing everyone Kaelen!" Adrian shrieked.
"No" Kaelen said.
"I'm Restructuring the Personnel."
Kaelen looked at Lia Sinclair.
"Lia. Eat the server bank."
"If I eat the hardware won't the people in the pods die Mr. Thorne?"
"They aren't in the pods anymore Lia" Kaelen said.
"I've just transferred their 'Consciousness Files' into the Shadow Scholarship Network."
"They are living in the world I built for them."
"A world where they own their own mana."
Lia's violet eyes widened.
She lunged at the massive wall of blinking servers and her void aura exploded.
The metal melted into her skin and the digital data was absorbed into her 'Universal Archive' form.
The laboratory began to shake as the building's power was siphoned into Lia.
Kaelen turned back to Adrian Vane's pod.
The glass was starting to crack as the internal pressure built up.
"Now Adrian" Kaelen whispered his face inches from the man's sleeping visage.
"Let's talk about your Personal Debt."
"You took ten years of my life."
"You used my grief as your market data."
"I'm not going to kill you."
Kaelen pressed a button on the terminal.
"I'm going to Lease your Mind."
[SKILL ACTIVATED: THE SOVEREIGN CONTRACT (REAL WORLD EDITION)]
[TARGET: ADRIAN VANE]
[REWARD: ACCESS TO THE REAL WORLD GATES]
Adrian Vane's eyes snapped open.
They were filled with a blinding white light that matched the color of the simulation's "Deletion."
He wasn't Adrian Vane anymore.
He was the Physical Avatar of the System.
The pod shattered.
Adrian stepped out and the air around him warped and crackled with the energy of a Rank SSS entity.
"Kaelen Thorne" the entity spoke his voice a chorus of a billion voices.
"You've been a very interesting variable."
"But you've made one mistake."
"You think this is the 'Real' world."
The entity raised a hand and the walls of the lab began to peel away like old wallpaper.
Behind the walls was not the city of Seoul.
It was a vast empty void filled with millions of floating pods stretching into infinity.
"Vane Industries is just a sub-directory Kaelen" the entity said.
"Earth is just a Server Farm for a civilization you can't even conceive."
"And I'm the System Administrator."
Kaelen Thorne didn't flinch.
He adjusted his non-existent glasses and a predatory smile touched his lips.
"A System Administrator?" Kaelen asked.
"Then I suppose you're the one I should give the Resignation Notice to."
Kaelen reached into his hospital gown and pulled out the [Chronos Core] shards.
They were no longer digital.
They were glowing pieces of absolute reality.
"I'm not quitting my job Administrator" Kaelen said.
"I'm Auditing the Company."
