Chapter 42 - THE COLLATERAL OF GENOCIDE

The sunlight streaming through the windows of the executive office felt like a lie.

It was warm. It was gold. It was identical to the morning of the selection.

But the air in the room was heavy with a cold metallic scent that Kaelen Thorne recognized with a jolt of primal horror.

It was the scent of twelve dead stars.

Kaelen stood by the mahogany desk his fingers still curled into a fist as the residual white energy of the Multiversal Court faded from his skin.

He looked at the man sitting in his high backed leather chair.

The man's suit was not made of fabric.

It was composed of billions of microscopic gold coins that shifted and jangled with every breath he took.

His face was a mask of polished brass and his eyes were two glowing diamond lenses that were currently reading a scroll that spilled out of his hand and onto the floor.

The scroll was a mile long.

It didn't contain names.

It contained the Serial Numbers of Galaxies.

Twelve universes Kaelen the man said his voice sounding like a waterfall of gold coins hitting a stone floor.

Twelve systems filled with life art culture and history.

All liquidated in a single heartbeat to pay the 'Restoration Fee' for your little sandbox.

The man looked up the diamond lenses in his eyes clicking as they focused on Kaelen.

I am The Liquidator General.

And I'm here to tell you that you are currently the most expensive human in the history of the multiverse.

Kaelen Thorne adjusted his tie with a slow deliberate motion.

He felt the Alpha Heart in his chest thrumming with a dark heavy resonance.

He didn't look at the scroll.

He looked at the man in his chair.

Who authorized the trade? Kaelen asked his voice a low lethal hum.

Lia Sinclair stood by the door her violet eyes wide with a terror she couldn't explain.

She was clutching her stomach as if she were about to be sick.

Mr. Thorne she whispered her voice trembling.

I can... I can hear them.

The Void is full of... ghosts.

Twelve worlds of ghosts.

Silas Vesper remained in the shadows his daggers drawn but for the first time his hand was shaking.

He was a killer but he had never imagined a slaughter of this scale.

The Multiversal Supreme Court authorized it of course the Liquidator General said with a sharp diamond smile.

You filed for a Restoration Kaelen.

You won the appeal.

But the Court does not create mana out of nothing.

They simply moved the 'Remaining Life Force' from twelve failing sectors into yours.

You didn't save Earth 01 Kaelen.

You performed a Hostile Takeover of their Vitality.

[SYSTEM MESSAGE]

[NOTICE: THE RESTORATION FEE HAS BEEN SETTLED]

[COST: 12 UNIVERSES (LIQUIDATED)]

[NEW TRAIT ACQUIRED: THE GENOCIDE AUDITOR (PASSIVE)]

[EFFECT: YOU CAN NOW SENSE THE WEAKNESS OF ANY WORLD BOUND FOR DELETION]

Kaelen walked toward the desk his charcoal suit reflecting the golden light of the Liquidator's presence.

He didn't look like a man crushed by guilt.

He looked like a man who was already reading the fine print of the bill.

You say they were 'Failing Sectors' Kaelen noted his eyes glowing with a cold obsidian light.

The Liquidator General paused his diamond eyes clicking.

They were underperforming yes.

But they had centuries of life left in them before the Deletion.

No Kaelen said slamming his hand onto the desk.

If the Court was able to liquidate them in a single second to pay for my world it means they were already Pre Foreclosed Assets.

Kaelen activated his [Sovereign Ledger] and the holographic display erupted in the room.

It didn't show Earth 01.

It showed the accounting records of the twelve dead universes.

The Liquidator General watched as Kaelen's fingers moved across the screens at a blistering speed.

Look at these numbers Kaelen hissed his voice resonant with a terrifying analytical clarity.

World 04. World 19. World 88.

They weren't just underperforming.

They were being Stripped of their Assets by the Head Office for the last three cycles.

The Court didn't use their 'Remaining Life Force' to save my world.

They used my Restoration as a Waste Disposal Unit.

The Liquidator General stood up the golden coins of his suit jangling with a sudden discordance.

What are you talking about?

I'm talking about Creative Accounting Kaelen said.

The Court owed a massive debt of mana to the Void Swarm and the External Creditors Kaelen explained.

By liquidating these twelve worlds and calling it a 'Restoration Fee' for me they erased those worlds' debts without having to pay the shareholders.

They didn't make me a killer.

They made me a Scapegoat for their Corporate Fraud.

[SYSTEM MESSAGE]

[SKILL ACTIVATED: FORENSIC PLOT ANALYSIS (LV 2)]

[NOTICE: YOU HAVE UNCOVERED A DIVINE EMBEZZLEMENT SCHEME]

The air in the office grew cold.

The golden light of the sun outside began to turn a sickly bruised purple.

The Liquidator General looked at the screens and his diamond eyes began to spin in frantic circles.

This... this data is encrypted.

You shouldn't have access to the Court's internal ledgers.

I adopted the System Kaelen reminded him stepping closer until his face was inches from the brass mask.

I am the Acting Architect.

There is no door in this reality that I cannot open.

Kaelen grabbed the mile long scroll and ripped it in half.

I refuse to accept the bill Kaelen declared.

You can't refuse a Court Order! the Liquidator roared his voice sounding like a landslide of metal.

I am not refusing the restoration Kaelen said his eyes erupting in a blinding white light.

I am filing a Cross Claim against the Multiversal Supreme Court for Fraudulent Conveyance.

Kaelen Thorne raised his hand and the golden threads of the Ledger lashed out into the air.

They didn't go toward the city.

They went toward the Gaps in Reality.

If the Court wants to use me as a garbage disposal then they are going to have to pay the Tipping Fee Kaelen shouted.

Lia! Silas!

I need you to enter the Graveyard of the Twelve Kaelen commanded.

Don't just watch the ghosts.

I want you to Collect their Remaining Claims.

Lia Sinclair's eyes widened. Mr. Thorne... you want me to eat the debt of twelve dead worlds?

I want you to become the Receiver of their Estate Kaelen said.

If the Court says I killed them then I have the right to inherit their Unfulfilled Promises.

Kaelen slammed his heart seal onto the holographic screen.

[SKILL ACTIVATED: THE SOVEREIGN RECEIVERSHIP]

[NOTICE: YOU ARE NOW THE LEGAL REPRESENTATIVE OF TWELVE DEAD UNIVERSES]

Suddenly the executive office exploded into a vortex of grey ash and golden light.

Kaelen Thorne stood in the center of the storm his charcoal suit turning into a garment made of a billion weeping souls.

He felt the power of twelve worlds flowing into his Alpha Heart.

It was a weight that would have crushed any hero.

But for an Auditor it was the greatest Tax Shield in history.

The Liquidator General began to dissolve his golden coins falling apart and turning into lead.

You... you've just turned yourself into a Walking Singularity of Debt!

The Head Office will have to delete the entire sector just to balance the books!

Let them try Kaelen said his voice sounding like the heartbeat of a trillion people.

I am the Public Defender of the Dead.

And I'm coming to the Head Office for a Total Settlement.
