Chapter 48 - CHAPTER 48: Shadows and Glances

Soo Bin moved between desks, arranging files with her usual careful precision, her brow slightly furrowed as she concentrated.

So Hee watched quietly from the corner, lips twitching faintly.

Focused as ever… she doesn't even notice me watching.

Soo Bin glanced up and caught her eyes, quickly looking away, cheeks warming.

"Stop staring at the files like your life depends on them," So Hee said, leaning casually against the desk. "You might miss something—or someone."

Soo Bin's heart skipped. "I—I'm fine," she said, ducking her head back to the paperwork.

So Hee's gaze lingered longer than necessary, assessing, confident, impossible to ignore.

The afternoon passed with the usual flow of work, punctuated by small interactions. Every time So Hee came close to point something out, every time she leaned over the desk, Soo Bin's pulse quickened.

By mid-afternoon, So Hee straightened and pulled a folder from the assignment board.

"We have something new coming up," she said, flipping it open with that calm precision that made Soo Bin's stomach flutter.

Soo Bin leaned in, curiosity lighting her face. "New case?"

So Hee nodded. "Yes. And it's… different."

She turned the folder so only Soo Bin could see.

"Drug-related. Undercover."

Soo Bin's eyes widened slightly. "Undercover? In a club?"

So Hee's expression didn't change, but her tone carried that subtle possessiveness Soo Bin was already used to.

"You'll be fine. Stick close to me."

Soo Bin felt heat rise to her cheeks. "…I will," she whispered.

"So Hee—" she started, but So Hee's hand brushed lightly over hers, just enough to make her pulse spike.

"Tonight. After shift. We leave. Quietly."

Soo Bin nodded, barely daring to breathe.

Stick close to her… I will.

So Hee turned to leave, then glanced back briefly, a faint smirk at the corner of her lips.

Soo Bin's breath caught.

The folder in her hands suddenly felt heavier.

It wasn't just a case.

It was the start of something… more.

And as the city lights outside flickered on, Soo Bin couldn't help but feel the tension coil tight in her chest.

Tonight… we go in. And I'll be with her.

The club lights pulsed like neon hearts, bass thumping through the floor as the crowd moved in waves.

So Hee and Soo Bin stood at the entrance, carefully scanning the room, blending in seamlessly with the night.

So Hee's hand brushed against Soo Bin's shoulder briefly—a small touch, almost imperceptible, but enough to make Soo Bin's stomach flip.

She's right here… she's mine, Soo Bin thought, unable to stop the rush of heat through her chest.

They moved deeper into the club, dressed in their undercover outfits. So Hee's presence was magnetic, drawing glances, and Soo Bin instinctively stayed close, trusting her completely.

A group of young men approached, laughing loudly. One of them lingered near Soo Bin, trying to strike up a conversation.

"Hey, you look familiar," he said, leaning just a little too close. "I think we should get to know each other better. Maybe upstairs?"

Soo Bin froze, heart racing. She tried to shake her head politely, but her voice caught.

From across the crowd, So Hee's gaze sharpened instantly.

Without hesitation, she strode over, moving with calm intensity, and stopped in front of the man.

"Never touch my girlfriend. You hear me?" she said firmly, her tone icy.

The man's smirk faltered as So Hee's hand gripped his shoulder tightly.

"She is mine. Don't ever try this again," So Hee added, her eyes locking with Soo Bin's across the dim lights.

Soo Bin's cheeks flushed, a mixture of embarrassment and delight. Her heart raced—not from the club's chaos, but from So Hee's unwavering protectiveness.

Later, the operation began in earnest. So Hee and Soo Bin split up slightly, each keeping tabs on suspects. The drug dealers were slippery, blending into the crowd, but So Hee's sharp eyes never left Soo Bin.

Every time Soo Bin moved, So Hee felt a subtle tug of possessiveness. She stayed close enough to keep her safe, yet gave her space to act.

By midnight, the situation escalated. Officers moved in, surrounding the suspects. So Hee and Soo Bin worked as a seamless team, taking notes, giving signals, and maintaining cover until the dealers were finally apprehended.

After the chaos subsided, the adrenaline still crackled between them.

"So Bin," So Hee said, voice low as they slipped out of the club into the quiet of the night, "you okay?"

Soo Bin nodded, smiling weakly, her legs trembling slightly from both nerves and excitement.

Without thinking, So Hee reached out and pulled her close. Their foreheads touched, breaths mingling, the city lights painting them in soft gold and purple hues.

"You scared me back there," So Hee whispered, her hand brushing against Soo Bin's cheek.

Soo Bin's heartbeat thundered. "…I was fine. Because you were here."

The air between them thickened. A small, teasing smile curved So Hee's lips.

"You should know… I don't like seeing anyone near you."

Soo Bin's cheeks heated instantly, but she couldn't hide the way her lips curved into a shy, delighted smile.

She's protective… possessive… and it feels so right.

So Hee leaned closer, brushing her lips against Soo Bin's forehead, a soft, fleeting kiss.

Soo Bin's breath caught. "Lieutenant…" she murmured, but So Hee only pressed her forehead once more and stepped back, smirk lingering.

"Come on," So Hee said, taking her hand. "You're coming home with me. You're too precious to leave alone tonight."

Soo Bin's hand tightened around hers, heart pounding, emotions a messy tangle of joy, relief, and something deeper.

As they disappeared into the quiet streets, the night air carried with it the tension and thrill of the day—the danger, the adrenaline, and the unspoken bond growing stronger.
