Chapter 37 - Chapter 36

The night refused to give her peace.

Sleep didn't come.

It didn't even dare to come near her.

Every time her eyes tried to close, her mind dragged her back—to those ocean-blue eyes, that chilling whisper, that suffocating presence hovering over her like a shadow that refused to fade.

She lay curled into herself on the bed.

Like something fragile.

Like something broken.

Her knees pulled close to her chest, fingers clutching the bedsheet tightly as if it was the only thing grounding her to reality.

Her breathing was uneven.

Shallow.

Trembling.

Hours passed.

Silently.

Painfully.

Her eyes felt heavy—too heavy—but even then, they refused to fully close. Half-lidded, glassy, lost somewhere between exhaustion and fear.

The mansion remained quiet.

But not peaceful.

Never peaceful.

Because now she knew—

Silence here wasn't safety.

It was just the calm before something worse.

Slowly—

Very slowly—

Darkness began to fade.

The first light of dawn crept into the room.

Soft hues of orange and yellow slipped through the curtains, spreading across the walls like a quiet promise of a new day.

But for her—

It didn't feel like a new beginning.

It felt like a continuation of a nightmare.

A single tear rolled down from the corner of her eye.

Warm.

Silent.

Helpless.

She didn't even bother wiping it away.

What was the point?

Another knock echoed through the room.

Knock.

She didn't move.

Knock.

Still nothing.

Knock.

Her fingers tightened slightly.

Adrian's warning echoed inside her mind—

"You don't open the door without my permission."

Her body stiffened.

Fear creeping back in.

What if—

What if it was him again?

What if the shadow had returned?

Her breathing hitched.

For a moment—

She stayed frozen.

But then—

Something unexpected rose within her.

A small spark.

Weak.

Shaky.

But there.

Courage.

Or maybe—

Desperation.

Slowly, she uncurled herself from the bed.

Her legs felt weak as they touched the floor.

Each step toward the door felt heavier than the last.

Her hand hovered over the handle.

Paused.

Then—

Without thinking further—

She opened it.

The door creaked slightly.

And on the other side—

Stood Alex.

Relief flickered across her face so quickly it was almost unnoticeable.

Alex, on the other hand, was taken aback.

Because the girl standing in front of him—

Was not the same girl from yesterday.

Her face looked pale.

Her eyes dull and tired.

Her entire presence… fragile.

For a second—

He didn't know what to say.

Then, quickly regaining himself, he straightened slightly.

"Sorry to disturb you, Ma'am, but—"

"It's Elena."

Her voice cut through his sentence.

Soft.

Broken.

Yet clear.

"You may… call me Elena."

Alex froze.

Completely.

Because she had never—

Not once—

Introduced herself like this.

Not to him.

Not to anyone.

He studied her for a moment.

Noticing the change.

Something had shifted inside her.

Something important.

He nodded slowly.

"Yes… Elena Ma'am," he corrected instinctively, then paused, his tone softening, "I apologise… for what you are going through."

She gave a faint smile.

Weak.

Barely there.

"It's… not your fault."

Her voice carried no blame.

No anger.

Just exhaustion.

That made it worse.

Alex's jaw tightened slightly.

Because he knew—

Exactly whose fault it was.

Still, he kept his voice calm.

Gentle.

"I know…" he said quietly, "but boss… his anger got out of control."

A pause.

Then he added, more serious this time—

"Because the man who entered your room… isn't someone to take lightly."

Her fingers instinctively clutched the fabric of her dress tighter.

Her mind flashing back—

To those eyes.

That voice.

That presence.

Her heartbeat quickened again.

"Could you please…" she spoke softly, avoiding his gaze, "…leave me alone for some time, Mr. Alex?"

A small pause.

Then, almost like a whisper—

"It's my request."

Alex didn't hesitate.

He understood.

More than she realised.

"Of course."

He nodded immediately.

"This isn't the time to ask questions."

He stepped back slightly.

Giving her space.

Respect.

"Take your time, Elena Ma'am."

He turned to leave.

But before he could take more than a step—

"T-thank you…"

Her voice stopped him.

He turned his head slightly.

"…for looking after me…"

A pause.

Then—

"Alex brother."

That—

Hit differently.

Completely.

Alex's eyes widened just a fraction.

The word echoed in his mind.

Brother.

No one had called him that in a long time.

Not like this.

Not with such fragile trust.

Slowly—

A small smile formed on his lips.

Genuine.

Warm.

Something rare.

"I should look after you, Elena."

This time—

He didn't call her "Ma'am."

Because something had changed.

A line had shifted.

And somewhere—

Without saying it out loud—

He had already accepted it.

She wasn't just someone under protection anymore.

She was—

His responsibility.

His sister.

And he would protect her.

No matter what.

Meanwhile—

In another part of the mansion—

Chaos was erupting.

The control room.

Screens flickered.

Footage glitched.

Men stood in tense silence.

And in the center of it all—

Adrian.

Fury radiated off him like fire.

"Answer me!"

His voice roared through the room, shaking the very walls.

"What were you all doing, huh?!"

No one spoke.

No one dared.

"Sleeping?!" he continued, his tone turning more dangerous with every word, "or too busy wasting time with some whores to do your damn job?!"

The men lowered their heads.

Sweat forming on their foreheads.

Because no excuse—

Would be enough.

Not this time.

Not after what had happened.

A man had entered the mansion.

Entered his territory.

Entered her room.

And walked out alive.

That was unacceptable.

Adrian slammed his hand against the control panel.

The screens flickered again.

"Useless!" he spat.

Just then—

The door opened.

Alex walked in.

Calm.

Composed.

A complete contrast to the chaos in the room.

Adrian's gaze snapped toward him immediately.

"Well?" he demanded.

Alex didn't waste time.

"Signal jammer."

The room went still.

"That intruder placed a signal jammer on top of the mansion," Alex continued, his voice steady, "which caused a complete glitch in all CCTV cameras and communication devices."

Adrian's expression darkened.

Further.

"If that's true…" one of the men spoke hesitantly, "…then he planned this in advance."

"Of course he did," Adrian snapped.

His jaw clenched.

His mind racing.

Every detail.

Every possibility.

"That means he knew the layout."

A pause.

His eyes narrowed dangerously.

"He knew the blind spots."

Another pause.

"And he knew exactly where to go."

The room fell into suffocating silence.

Because they all understood what that meant.

This wasn't random.

This wasn't luck.

This was—

Calculated.

Precise.

Intentional.

Adrian let out a slow breath.

But it didn't calm him.

It made him colder.

Deadlier.

"Find the jammer."

His voice dropped.

Low.

Lethal.

"Now."

The men scrambled into action immediately.

No one dared delay.

Alex remained where he stood.

Watching Adrian carefully.

Because he knew—

This wasn't over.

Not even close.

Adrian turned toward the largest screen.

Even though it was glitching.

Even though it showed nothing.

He stared at it—

As if he could see through it.

As if he could see him.

"Skull Crusher…" he muttered the nick name under his breath.

The name burned.

Like fire.

Like a challenge.

"You think you can walk into my territory…"

A slow, dangerous smirk formed on his lips.

"…and walk out untouched?"

His eyes darkened.

"Let's see how long that lasts."

Back in her room—

Elena sat on the bed quietly.

Her fingers still trembling slightly.

Her mind still heavy.

But something else crept in slowly.

A thought.

A realization.

That man—

He knew this place.

He wasn't afraid.

Not even a little.

And Adrian—

Even he reacted.

Strongly.

Too strongly.

And somewhere—

Beyond the walls of the mansion—

A pair of ocean-blue eyes watched from a distance.

Calm.

Patient.

Unbothered.

A faint smirk curved on his lips.

"Let him tighten his security…"

he murmured under his breath.

"It won't change anything."

His gaze remained fixed on the mansion.

Sharp.

Unwavering.

Because to him—

This was just the beginning.

And next time—

He wouldn't just enter unnoticed.

He would leave a mark.

Something—

No one could ignore.

And inside the mansion—

Unaware of how close danger truly was—

Elena sat quietly.

Not knowing—

That she had already been chosen.

And this time—

No one would be able to protect her.
