Chapter 50 - CHAPTER 49: Lines That Shouldn’t Be Crossed

The evening settled quietly over the city, carrying with it the kind of calm that came after a long day. Inside Kang Min's apartment, the soft sound of cooking filled the kitchen. The scent of food spread gradually through the space, warm and familiar.

Kang Min stood by the stove, focused on what he was doing. His sleeves were slightly rolled up, movements steady as he stirred the pot in front of him. It was one of the few moments in his day where everything slowed down.

The front door opened.

He didn't turn immediately, but he heard the footsteps.

They were heavier than usual.

Ji Won walked in without saying anything, dropping her bag carelessly by the couch before heading straight toward her room.

Kang Min paused.

That wasn't normal.

"Ji Won," he called.

No response.

He turned slightly.

She had already disappeared into her room.

He lowered the heat on the stove and walked out of the kitchen, wiping his hands on a towel.

He knocked lightly on her door.

"Ji Won."

A faint voice came from inside.

"I'm fine."

He didn't believe that.

He opened the door.

Ji Won sat on her bed, arms crossed, her expression tight with frustration.

Kang Min stepped in, closing the door behind him.

"What happened?"

She didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she let out a breath that carried more annoyance than anything else.

"School," she said finally.

Kang Min leaned slightly against the wall.

"What about it?"

She looked at him.

"We were given an assignment."

"That doesn't sound like a problem."

"It is," she replied quickly. "This one is different."

He waited.

She continued,

"It's difficult. Not just difficult… confusing."

Kang Min listened.

"I tried to understand it on my own. I couldn't. I went to meet some of my classmates… even the ones that are always ahead."

"And?" he asked.

"They don't understand it either," she said, frustration rising again. "No one does."

Kang Min's expression remained calm.

"When is it due?"

"Tomorrow."

That explained everything.

Ji Won leaned back slightly, running her hand through her hair.

"It doesn't make sense. I've been trying all day."

Kang Min nodded once.

"Alright."

She looked at him.

"That's it?"

"For now," he said. "Come eat first."

"I'm not hungry."

"You will be," he replied. "And thinking on an empty stomach won't help."

She hesitated.

Then sighed.

"Fine."

Dinner was quiet at first.

Ji Won picked at her food without much interest, still thinking about the assignment.

Kang Min didn't push her.

He simply ate, giving her space.

After a few minutes, she spoke again.

"What if I don't finish it?"

"You will," he said.

"You don't even know what it is."

"Then show me after dinner."

She looked at him.

"You're going to help?"

"I'll take a look," he replied. "That's all."

That was enough.

Ji Won ate a little more, her mood shifting slightly.

Not fully better.

But less tense.

After they were done, she stood up immediately.

"I'll bring it."

Kang Min cleared the table while she went to her room.

She returned shortly after, holding a notebook and some printed sheets.

She placed them on the table.

"This is it."

Kang Min wiped his hands and sat down.

He pulled the papers closer, scanning through them carefully.

Ji Won watched him.

At first, his expression didn't change.

Then, slowly, something clicked.

He leaned back slightly.

"I see."

Ji Won leaned forward.

"You understand it?"

Kang Min nodded once.

"It's not as complicated as it looks."

Her eyes widened slightly.

"It definitely is."

He shook his head.

"They made it look that way."

He turned the paper toward her.

"Sit."

She sat immediately.

Kang Min picked up a pen.

"Look here," he said, pointing to a section. "This part is where everything connects."

Ji Won followed his explanation closely.

At first, she looked confused.

Then, gradually, her expression began to change.

"Oh…"

Kang Min continued, breaking it down step by step.

No rush.

No pressure.

Just clear explanation.

Ji Won leaned closer, her focus sharpening.

"So this connects to this?" she asked.

"Yes."

"And this part is just… extra?"

"Exactly."

Her eyes lit up.

"That's why it didn't make sense!"

Kang Min nodded.

"They added unnecessary details."

Ji Won sat back slightly, processing everything.

Then she smiled.

A real one this time.

"I get it now."

Kang Min placed the pen down.

"Good."

She looked at him.

"Why didn't they just explain it like that?"

He gave a small response.

"They expect you to figure it out."

"That's unfair."

"Maybe," he said. "But you figured it out now."

Ji Won looked at the assignment again.

"I can finish this."

"Yes."

She stood up quickly.

"I'll do it now before I forget."

Kang Min nodded.

"Go ahead."

She paused for a moment.

Then said,

"Thanks."

He gave a small nod.

"Anytime."

She went back to her room.

A few minutes later, the sound of her writing could be heard faintly.

Kang Min leaned back in his chair for a moment, letting out a quiet breath.

Not far away, Ara stepped into her apartment.

The atmosphere inside felt different.

Quiet.

Still.

Ha Eun was in the living room, arranging dishes on the table.

Dinner was ready.

She glanced up as Ara entered.

For a brief moment, it seemed like she was about to say something.

But she didn't.

Ara noticed the food.

She also noticed the effort.

But her expression didn't change.

She placed her bag down and moved past the table without stopping.

Ha Eun spoke.

"I made dinner."

Ara didn't respond.

She walked toward her room.

Ha Eun turned slightly.

"You're not going to eat?"

Ara stopped.

But she didn't turn.

"Not hungry."

That was all she said.

Ha Eun's expression tightened slightly.

"You didn't even look at it."

Ara turned this time.

"I saw it."

"Then sit and eat."

Ara shook her head.

"No."

Ha Eun stepped closer.

"You haven't eaten since morning, have you?"

"That's not your concern."

The words landed harder than expected.

Ha Eun stared at her.

"What's that supposed to mean?"

Ara's voice remained firm.

"It means I'm not doing this."

"Doing what?" Ha Eun asked.

"This," Ara replied. "Acting like everything is fine."

Ha Eun frowned.

"I made dinner."

"And I didn't ask you to."

That shifted something.

Ha Eun's tone changed.

"So now I shouldn't even cook?"

"That's not what I said."

"Then what are you saying?"

Ara looked at her directly.

"I'm saying that until you stop digging into that case, we don't have anything to talk about."

The words were clear.

Final.

Ha Eun let out a short breath.

"You're still on that?"

"Yes."

Ara didn't hesitate.

"I told you to stay out of it."

"And I told you I won't," Ha Eun replied immediately.

The tension rose again.

Ara stepped closer.

"You don't understand what you're getting into."

"And you don't understand what this could do for me," Ha Eun shot back.

Ara's expression hardened.

"This is not about you."

"It is," Ha Eun said. "It's my career."

Ara stared at her.

"A career doesn't matter if you're putting yourself in danger."

Ha Eun shook her head.

"You're overreacting."

"I'm not."

"You are," Ha Eun insisted. "You just don't want me involved."

"Yes," Ara said. "I don't."

"Why?"

"Because I know what this is."

Ha Eun didn't back down.

"And I want to know too."

Ara exhaled sharply.

"This is not something you chase for promotion."

Ha Eun's eyes flashed slightly.

"This case is big."

"That's exactly why you should stay away from it."

"No," Ha Eun replied. "That's why I should get closer."

Ara stared at her for a moment.

Then said quietly,

"You're not stopping."

"No."

The answer came without hesitation.

Ara nodded slowly.

"Then we're done talking."

She turned and walked toward her room.

Ha Eun's voice followed her.

"You can't tell me what to do!"

Ara didn't stop.

The door closed behind her.

Inside her room, Ara stood still for a moment.

The anger faded faster than she expected.

What remained was something heavier.

She sat on the edge of her bed, her hands resting on her knees.

Her thoughts moved quickly, replaying the conversation.

Every word.

Every response.

She closed her eyes briefly.

Then opened them again.

Her breathing slowed.

But the feeling didn't leave.

She looked toward the door.

On the other side, Ha Eun was still there.

Still stubborn.

Still refusing to listen.

Ara's expression softened, just slightly.

"She doesn't understand," she muttered under her breath.

But that wasn't what hurt.

What hurt was knowing that even if she tried to explain it, Ha Eun might still refuse to stop.

Ara leaned forward, resting her elbows on her knees.

Her hands came up to her face.

And for the first time that night, her composure broke.

Tears formed quietly.

Not from anger.

From fear.

She wiped them quickly, but more followed.

Her shoulders lowered as she tried to steady herself.

"She won't stop…"

The thought stayed.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

Ara shook her head slightly.

"I can't lose her."

Her voice was barely above a whisper.

The room remained quiet around her.

Outside, nothing had changed.

But inside, everything felt different.

Because this time, it wasn't about a case.

It was about someone she couldn't afford to lose.

And no matter how hard she tried—

she wasn't sure she could stop what was coming.
