Chapter 44 - CHAPTER 43: The Imperfection That Speaks

The investigation did not slow down after the discovery of the copycat. If anything, it demanded more attention from the team. What had once followed a single, calculated pattern had now split into two directions, and that difference could no longer be ignored.

By the time the team settled back into the station that morning, the board had already been reorganized. On one side were the previous victims linked to the Ghost Eyes case—clean patterns, consistent details, and precise execution. On the other side was the new victim. Similar in appearance at first glance, but the deeper they looked, the more the differences stood out.

Kang Min stood in front of the board, studying both sections carefully. Ara sat nearby with the victim's file open in front of her, reading through it again as if something might reveal itself the second time. Bong Soo had spread printed crime scene photographs across the table, comparing them one by one. Su Young remained at her desk, already working through digital reports and forensic data.

The room was quiet, but not idle. Everyone was thinking.

Ara closed the file and looked up.

"We've been approaching this the wrong way," she said.

Kang Min turned slightly.

"How?"

"We've been focusing on what matches," she replied. "But this case isn't about what matches. It's about what doesn't."

Bong Soo picked up one of the photographs and placed it on the table.

"The injuries already tell us that much," he said.

Ara stood and walked closer, looking down at the image. The victim's arm showed visible bruising and defensive marks that had not appeared in previous cases.

"This victim fought back," she said.

Kang Min nodded.

"And that's where the difference begins."

Su Young turned slightly in her chair.

"So instead of comparing similarities, we isolate the inconsistencies."

Kang Min stepped closer to the table.

"Yes. The copycat couldn't replicate everything. That's where the mistake is."

Bong Soo leaned back slightly.

"People make mistakes when they try to imitate something they don't fully understand."

Ara crossed her arms.

"Then we focus on those mistakes."

That was all it took to shift their direction.

They began reviewing the crime scene again, but this time with a different focus. Every detail that had seemed minor before was now worth attention.

Photographs were rearranged. Notes were revisited. Small observations were no longer dismissed.

Ara pointed at one image.

"Look at this."

It was a close-up of the victim's wrist. There were marks—thin lines pressed into the skin.

Bong Soo leaned forward.

"Bindings."

Su Young zoomed in on her screen.

"Yes, but not properly done."

Kang Min studied the image closely.

"The pressure isn't even."

Ara nodded.

"It's inconsistent. Too tight in some places, loose in others."

That alone was enough to tell them something had gone wrong during the process.

Su Young adjusted the image further, enhancing the clarity.

"This isn't regular rope," she said.

Ara looked at her.

"What do you mean?"

Su Young leaned closer to the screen.

"The texture is different. It's not natural fiber."

Bong Soo frowned slightly.

"Then what is it?"

Su Young didn't answer immediately. She focused on the image, adjusting contrast and resolution until the material became clearer.

"It looks synthetic," she said.

Kang Min's attention sharpened.

"Synthetic how?"

"Like industrial cord," she replied. "Reinforced plastic fiber or something similar."

Ara considered that.

"That's not something people use casually."

Su Young shook her head.

"No. It's usually used for specific purposes—packaging, construction, or equipment securing."

Bong Soo nodded slowly.

"So it's traceable."

Kang Min gave a short nod.

"Yes."

That changed the direction of the investigation immediately.

Su Young began typing, pulling up databases and supplier information.

"I'll check distribution records," she said. "This kind of material isn't widely available."

Ara stepped back slightly, watching the screen.

"If it's limited, then we can narrow it down."

Su Young continued working.

"There are only a few suppliers that deal with this type locally."

Bong Soo looked at Kang Min.

"That's a lead."

Kang Min didn't respond immediately, but his focus remained steady.

"It's a starting point."

They continued reviewing the images.

Ara picked up another photograph and placed it on the table.

"There's something else."

The image showed part of the victim's clothing, near the shoulder area. There was a faint, glossy residue that hadn't stood out earlier.

Su Young noticed it immediately and zoomed in.

"That wasn't highlighted before."

"It looked insignificant," Ara said.

Kang Min stepped closer.

"Enhance it."

Su Young adjusted the image, refining the details.

The residue became clearer.

Thin.

Uneven.

Reflective under light.

Bong Soo leaned forward.

"Adhesive?"

Su Young nodded slowly.

"Yes, but not standard tape."

Ara looked at her.

"What kind?"

Su Young began searching again, comparing the visual sample with known materials.

"This looks closer to industrial bonding adhesive," she said. "Something used for strong sealing or material fixation."

Kang Min's gaze remained on the screen.

"Used in what fields?"

"Construction, manufacturing, sometimes specialized repairs," she replied.

Ara exhaled quietly.

"So again, not something common."

"No," Su Young said. "And not something someone would use without prior exposure."

Bong Soo folded his arms.

"He used materials he thought would work, not what actually fits the method."

Kang Min nodded.

"That's the difference between him and the original."

The real Ghost Eyes killer left nothing unnecessary behind. Every detail had purpose.

The copycat had tried to recreate that image, but his choices revealed his lack of precision.

Su Young continued working, now combining both findings.

"If I cross-reference the cord and the adhesive, we can narrow the search further."

Kang Min looked at her.

"Do it."

The room shifted into focused movement again.

Data filled the screen as Su Young filtered through supplier records, online orders, and delivery logs. She refined the search using timeframes that matched the estimated period before the murder.

Ara watched closely.

"If he bought them recently, it should show."

Su Young nodded.

"That's what I'm checking."

Seconds passed.

Then minutes.

No one interrupted her.

Then she stopped.

"I found something."

Kang Min stepped closer immediately.

"What is it?"

She pointed at the screen.

"A small purchase. Not bulk. Just enough for limited use."

Bong Soo leaned in.

"Both items?"

"Yes," she said. "Same account."

Ara straightened slightly.

"So he bought them together."

Su Young nodded.

"And not long before the incident."

That detail mattered.

Bong Soo frowned.

"Can we track where it was delivered?"

Su Young clicked through the information.

"Yes."

Another set of data appeared.

"Local address."

Kang Min's eyes remained fixed on the screen.

"Payment method?"

"I'm tracing it now," she replied.

Ara looked at the board again.

The copycat case was no longer just an imitation.

It had direction now.

A path forming out of small mistakes.

Kang Min spoke quietly.

"He tried to make it look perfect."

Ara responded.

"But he didn't understand how it worked."

That gap was enough.

Su Young continued analyzing the information.

"I'll pull everything connected to this account."

Bong Soo nodded.

"That should give us a name."

Kang Min didn't rush his response.

But his voice carried certainty.

"We're getting closer."

No one disagreed.

The room settled into a focused silence again, but this time it felt different.

There was movement now.

Progress that could be followed.

The copycat had tried to imitate something precise.

But in doing so, he had left behind something the original never would.

And that was enough to begin closing the distance.

Outside, the city moved on without noticing the shift.

But inside the investigation, something had changed.

They were no longer searching blindly.

They had found a thread.

And they were about to follow it.
