Chapter 119 - Chapter 119: England's First Match in World Cup

I'm back, guys. So, my laptop's busted and I will buy a new one soon. Till then i will try to update through my tab.

...

On June 14, 2018, the Russia World Cup kicked off.

England first match was against Tunisia, a strong North African team, at the Volgograd Arena. The immense roar of the crowd almost blew the roof off this modern stadium located on the banks of the Volga River.

In the England team locker room, however, the atmosphere was tinged with the unique solemnity and focus of a pre-game. Head Coach Southgate, dressed in a sharp vest, had a composed expression. He took a final sweep of the starting players, his gaze lingering on core players like Kane, Henderson, and Maguire for a moment, then quickly moving over the substitutes' bench. On the substitutes' bench, number 17, Oliver, sat quietly in the corner, wearing a vest, listening attentively to the Coach's instructions.

"Lads," Southgate's voice cut through the locker room's noise, "Remember our tactics. Both wings, speed! Crosses! Set pieces are our weapon! Be patient, but even more aggressive! Tunisia will sit deep, they'll be tenacious, but we have the ability to break them down! Go out there, and let the world see what we're made of!"

The players filed out, stepping onto the roaring green pitch. Oliver followed at the end of the line, and as he stepped onto the grass, an enormous wave of sound washed over him. This scene reminded him of the Bernabéu last season. This was the charm of the world's number one sport.

He looked towards the stands belonging to England fans; amidst the sea of white and red flags, there were some support signs with his name written on them. Ollie took a deep breath, suppressing the excitement of stepping onto a World Cup pitch for the first time. Hequickly walked to the substitutes' bench to sit down.

"Ladies and gentlemen, we are live from Volgograd Arena and you are now watching the first-round match of Group G in the 2018 Russia World Cup, between England and Tunisia!"

Thousands of miles away, BBC Commentator Guy Mowbray's voice came through clearly, with his usual passion:

"We see that both teams' players have already entered the field!

The England Team today is lining up in a 3-5-2 formation, with Pickford in goal! The defensive line from left to right is Maguire, Stones, Walker. Henderson is the single pivot, supporting Lingard and Alli in the centre mid. Ashley Young is on the left flank and Trippier on the right, both of whom will be suppoting the striker duo of Sterling and Kane."

"It's worth noting," Martin Keown interjected,

"The young talent Oliver, who has garnered much attention from recent scandal—the 18-year-old genius who just helped Hoffenheim win the Bundesliga title and shone brightly in the Champions League—is not starting today but is on the substitutes' bench. It seems Coach Southgate still opted for a more stable starting lineup to face the first World Cup match.

However, with the terrifying attacking power Oliver displayed last season, as both the Bundesliga and Champions League top scorer, I think all of us, are very much looking forward to Oliver making an appearance at some point to inject new vitality into the Three Lions!"

After the match began, the England Team charged towards Tunisia's half like uncaged predator. The ball moved fluidly among the England players, and their tactical intent was very clear: Wingplay.

In the 2nd minute, Henderson threaded a accurate pass to Alli who drifts wide and drove a low cross to Sterling. He overcommits and gives away the possesion, but Dele Alli did a successful standing tackle and passed the ball to Lingard. Jesse Lingard right footed shot from the centre of the box. Saved by Hassen. The ball rolls away for a corner.

Less than 10 minutes into the match, Trippier had already delivered three high-quality crosses, one of which Kane got to, but his header went just over the crossbar. Alli in midfield looked at ease; he constantly received and distributed the ball, orchestrating the direction of the attack with long and short passes. Henderson's positioning was relatively deep, like a solid barrier, keenly intercepting Tunisia's sporadic counter-attack attempts.

11th minute. Corner Kick. Young on the ball. Ashley Young whips a curving ball to penalty spot area where Stones arrived and headed the ball toward the top right corner. Hossen arrived flying right in time to deflect the ball. The deflected ball roll toward Kane who was waiting there. Kane took a first time right footed shot toward the center of goal, from within the 6 yard box to give England the lead.

"GOOOOOOOOOOAL!!! Kane!!! 1:0! From the rebound! Sensational timing and position!! The Three Lions are one goal up!!!" Mowbray was already screaming.

Keown continued, "Looks like Hossen pulled a muscle there and he has. As he is subbed off."

Alli was very active in the attacking midfield position, making aggressive runs forward and appearing in dangerous areas of the box multiple times.

"The situation on the field is very clear; England's possession rate is steadily climbing, quickly exceeding 65%, firmly pinning Tunisia in their own half."

Tunisia's new goalkeeper, Mustapha, became the busiest person in the first half of the first period. He made save after save, thwarting England's attacks repeatedly. Whether it was Kane's powerful headers or Alli's powershots after breaking through. All were kept out.

In the 31st minute, a small incident gave England fans a scare. Trippier took a corner, and Mustapha, coming out to claim the ball, collided hard with Maguire, who had also jumped high to challenge for it; Harry fell to the ground in pain. Fortunately, after brief treatment, he got back up, and the match continued.

Mustapha passed the ball to Syam Youssef who passed it to Bronn. Bronn thundered down the right flank and crossed the ball high toward the penalty spot. Youseff who was running for the ball was brought down by an elbow to face.

"The ref has pointed to the spot, its a penalty for Tunisia. And Walker is on a yellow card for now."

The entire stadium seemed to hit a mute button; the cheers of England fans abruptly ceased, replaced by the ecstatic shouts of Tunisia fans. England players looked at each other, their faces etched with frustration. This foul indeed exposed England's lack of concentration in momentary defense and unclear marking assignments.

"Maybe, Guy, this is a huge opportunity for Tunisia to capatilize on. The only question left to answer is that if they score or does Pickford get better end of it."

Ferjani Sassi went to collect the ball and take the penalty, while Pickford did his best to distract him. The ball slammed into the net! Pickford dived to right! It was too close! The ball hit the net!

"GOAL!!! Tunisia!!! Sassi!!! Unbelievable! Pickford was so close! Tunisia has equalized!" Keown was filled with astonishment on Pickford's effort.

1-1.

Rest of half went like a Tug-of-War match with both team struggling to create any real chance. The halftime whistle blew quickly.

The atmosphere in the England locker room instantly became heavy. Southgate's expression returned to seriousness; he quickly drew on the whiteboard, emphasizing areas for improvement in the second half: higher efficiency, more decisive wing attacks, more aggressive attacking in the box, and, set-piece defense must be 100% focused!

"Second half begins! Neither team has made any substitutions! The England Team must regain their rhythm and their lead!"Mowbray's voice resumed.

After the break, England continued to control possession, but Tunisia's defensive organization in the midfield and defense was like an impenetrable wall. The two center-backs, Meriah and Ben Youssef, played heroically, repeatedly blocking England's shots and crossing lanes with their bodies.

Kane was heavily marked in the box, making it difficult for him to find space to shoot. Young attempted a few long-range shots after cutting inside, but they were generally ineffective, one of which Mustapha safely gathered. Alli tried to get closer to Kane, but Tunisia's defense was airtight.

Lingard, despite his efforts, found few solutions under the double-teaming of Sassi and covering players; his success rate for breakthroughs was very low, and his link-up play with teammates lacked spark. Henderson's position advanced slightly, increasing midfield support and long-range shooting, but with little effect.

The match entered a suffocating stalemate. Time ticked by, and anxiety began to creep into the songs of England fans. Southgate on the sideline kept checking his watch, his face growing grimmer.

"No, this can't go on."

In the 60th minute, Southgate finally made a decision. He stood up and walked towards the substitutes' bench. All eyes, instantly focused on him.

"Oliver!" Southgate called out clearly and forcefully, "Go warm up immediately! Prepare to come on!"

Oliver's head snapped up, his eyes instantly igniting with fire.

"Yes, Coach!"

He quickly got up, took off his vest, and began sprinting and stretching on the sideline. Every warm-up run caused a stir and expectant murmurs in the stands. The camera also tightly focused on this young figure.

"Southgate is making a substitution! Coming off is… Sterling! And coming on is, number 17, Oliver!" Mowbray's voice suddenly rose, "The 18-year-old talent Oliver is making his World Cup debut! He wore number 17 for Hoffenheim, and now he wears number 17 for the England National Team. His national team debut is a baptism by fire! Let's see if this super rising star, the hottest in European football this season, can be the key for England to break the deadlock!"

In the 62nd minute, a dead ball occurred. The fourth official raised the substitution board: Number 10 Sterling off, Number 17 Oliver on! Sterling jogged off, high-fiving Oliver. Oliver stepped onto the World Cup grass. A huge cheer and applause erupted in the Volgograd Arena. Oliver took a deep breath and quickly ran to his position.

Southgate shouted loudly from the sideline, gesturing with his hands, instructing Oliver to use his dribbling ability to create danger on the right wing and create opportunities for his teammates.

After Oliver came on, he quickly displayed extremely high energy and presence. His first touch came on the right wing, where he received a pass from Henderson. Facing the experienced Tunisia left-back Maaloul, Oliver showed no fear. He swayed his upper body slightly and executed two quick step-overs with his feet, changing rhythm with extreme suddenness. Maaloul's center of gravity was momentarily shifted, and Oliver seized this fleeting gap, powerfully pushing the ball forward with the outside of his left foot.

Maloul quickly turned to chase, but his start was a beat too slow, forcing him to awkwardly reach out and pull, barely bringing Oliver down. England earned a well-placed free kick Trippier, the usual free-kick taker, took the shot, but unfortunately, it was cleared.

"Wow! Look at that, Oliver's breakthrough! Clean and decisive!" Keown praised, "His footwork frequency and initial burst are indeed very fast, and his ball control is excellent! Maaloul is struggling a bit against him."

Just a few minutes later, England won the ball back in the midfield. Dele Alli quickly turned and advanced with the ball! At this moment, Oliver, like a keen-scented cheetah, observed the huge gap between Tunisia's left-back Maaloul and center-back Ben Youssef before even starting his run. He unhesitatingly sprinted diagonally at high speed towards the right side of the penalty area! This was a textbook anti-offside run. The timing and trajectory were perfect.

As he sprinted, he raised his hand high, signaling to Dele Alli for a pass! If the ball came, it would definitely be a one-on-one opportunity.

"Gap! Oliver! Chance!" Guy's voice almost broke.

However, Dele Alli, who had the ball, seemed more accustomed to dribbling through himself or looking for Kane. He saw Oliver's run, and his feet seemed to hesitate for a split second, not choosing to immediately send that deadly through ball. He took two extra steps, seemingly wanting to find an angle himself, but he was already blocked by Tunisia's defensive midfielder Skhiri, who had come to cover. Dele Alli took a forced left-footed long-range shot from 26 meters out! The shot had decent power, but the angle was too central, and it was easily collected by the goalkeeper Mustapha.

"Oh no! Dele Alli! He should have passed that ball! Oliver's run was too good!!" Keown exclaimed regretfully.

The camera captured Oliver stopping abruptly in the open space, spreading his hands, his face full of bewilderment. He looked at Dele Alli, his eyes questioning. Dele Alli also realized his mistake and raised his hand towards Oliver, signaling an apology.

"My bad, my bad," Dele Alli replied softly and politely.

The coaching staff on the bench also shook their heads. This small incident clearly exposed the lack of sufficient understanding and complete trust between Oliver and the existing England Team starters. It was actually quite normal. Just over ten days of training camp could not completely bridge the gap between Oliver and the other England internationals. Understanding is built slowly by playing together; it's not something everyone gains a high level of after just over ten days of living in the same place. Dele Alli had also made what he thought was a safe decision just now; he didn't intentionally withhold the ball from Oliver.

A few more minutes passed. Trippier had the ball in the right attacking fourth. Oliver didn't insist on going to the byline but cleverly dropped back to the right side of the edge of the penalty area, precisely in the vacuum between the opposing defensive midfielder and the defensive line, about twenty-three or twenty-four meters from the goal.

This position was an excellent starting point for an attack. Oliver raised his hand again, clearly demanding the ball. Trippier saw him, and he also saw the open space.

But Trippier seemed to hesitate, perhaps not trusting the shooting ability of this new guy, or perhaps being more accustomed to passing to Henderson in the middle or Young making an overlapping run on the left. He paused for a moment, and in the end, still chose to trust his habit and the safer option. He passed the ball horizontally back to Henderson in the middle.

Henderson then distributed it to Young, who had joined the attack on the left. He attempted a cross, but it was blocked out for a corner by a covering Tunisia player. A potential excellent attacking opportunity vanished due to passing hesitation.

Oliver helplessly ran back to his position again; he shook his head, took a few deep breaths, and his eyes became sharper. Ollie finally understood at this moment. Trust is earned; it's not something others actively give you. Among the other 10 players on the field, only Maguire had been his teammate; the others had only been with him for these ten-plus days.

On the highest level of the football stage, to gain the full trust of teammates, one can only speak through undeniable performance. Teammates' understanding of his running habits and threat areas still needed time and actual combat to build. Oliver decided to do it himself.

Time reached the 80th minute. A Tunisia attack was ended in the England Team's half. Henderson successfully poked the ball away from Khazri near the center circle! The ball rolled towards Oliver near the center circle!

"Oliver has the ball! Chance! Let's see what he'll do!!" Guy's voice immediately grew tense.

Oliver received the ball with his back to goal, and Tunisia's midfielder Badri immediately charged aggressively from behind and to the side, attempting to win the ball or disrupt him immediately.

But Oliver's ball control skills were fully displayed at this moment. He was extremely calm, gently pulling the ball to the right with his right foot, faking a turn to the right. Just as Badri shifted his weight, his left foot's instep quickly dragged the ball to the front left. An extremely nimble, concealed, yet practical roulette, Badri didn't even touch the ball and was left behind by Oliver.

He broke free, Oliver now had a vast open space in front of him. Oliver accelerated with the ball, like a sports car at full throttle, heading straight for the right wing of Tunisia's penalty area. His stride frequency was fast, and his dribbling rhythm was incredibly strong; the ball remained firmly controlled in the most comfortable position at his feet.

Tunisia's defensive midfielder Skhiri sprinted back at full speed from the flank to cover, attempting to use his body to block Oliver's advance. But Oliver's physical strength was equally outstanding. He cleverly leaned into Skhiri with his left shoulder and arm, using the momentum of his run to forcefully push away the opponent's physical contact, without losing balance, and continued to stride forward with the ball. Tunisia's defense instantly became a scene of panic. Left-back Maloul and center-back Ben Youssef realized the danger, and both converged on Oliver simultaneously.

One from the left, one from the right, attempting to block all his routes for cutting inside and crossing. It looked like a closing trap was about to form. In a flash of lightning, Oliver made his decision.

Pass? Kane was tightly marked by another center-back Meriah near the penalty spot, and Rashford on the far left hadn't yet arrived in position to overlap. His teammates' positions didn't seem ideal. Oliver keenly noticed that, at the moment the two defenders were about to converge, Maloul, in an effort to block the inside cutting route, shifted his body weight to the left, causing an extremely tiny gap to appear between his right leg and Ben Youssef.

Don't pass. Go for it directly!

Oliver sharply pulled the ball with his left foot towards his own body's inside. This feint was small in amplitude but extremely sudden, perfectly faking out Maloul's less-than-half-meter shift in weight. It was this feint that, in the gap between the two converging defenders, opened up a sliver of an angle. Oliver didn't even need to adjust his steps; his body naturally twisted to the left, his right foot's instep taut, and with all his strength, he fiercely struck the lower-middle part of the ball.

"Thump!"

The ball, like a cannonball fired from a barrel, rose off the ground with a strong outside spin, whistling through the air. It didn't fly towards the near post but curved into a deadly arc, directly into the top-left corner of the goal. An absolute dead angle.

Tunisia's goalkeeper Mustapha reacted incredibly fast, making a desperate diving save! But his fingertips were at least half a meter away from the ball. The ball grazed the intersection of the crossbar and the post and slammed into the net.

"GOOOOOOOOOOOOAL!!! Number 17!!! Oliver!!!" The Commentator's booth completely exploded! He Wei's voice was hoarse and frenzied, "A world-class goal on his World Cup debut!!! England 2:1! This is Oliver's national team debut! His maiden goal! A golden goal!!! An 18-year-old youth! On the World Cup stage! With a thunderous individual performance! He has put England ahead once again!!!"

Volgograd Arena went completely mad. This time, all of Oliver's teammates, Kane, Lingard, Henderson, Maguire…

All of them rushed madly towards the goal-scoring hero, They excitedly patted Oliver's head and back, hugging him tightly, pressing him down! Southgate on the bench could no longer remain calm; he excitedly rushed to the sideline, clenching his fists, forcefully punching the air, his face showing ecstasy and relief.

Teammate trust crisis? In the face of this unstoppable goal, it vanished like smoke!

This goal not only ignited the stadium but also ignited the fighting spirit and confidence of the entire England Team. Tunisia was stunned by this heavy blow; they were forced to push forward and attack. The England Team's morale surged, their formation appropriately dropped back, but their counter-attacking blade became even sharper.

In the 88th minute, Tunisia earned a corner, and Maguire, in the crowd, out-jumped Khazri, heading the ball out of the penalty area. The second ball was controlled by Stones.

He didn't hesitate at all; he looked up and saw the huge open space on the right wing, and Oliver, who had already started like an arrow from a bow! Stones sent a precise diagonal pass to the right forward. Oliver easily shook off Skhiri, who was attempting to press him, using his speed, and received Stones's ball near the halfway line.

He dribbled forward with a long run. His speed wasn't as absolute as Rashford's, but his dribbling rhythm and observation ability while advancing were world-class. Tunisia's sole remaining center-back Meriah retreated defensively, and the chasing left-back Maaloul desperately pursued him from behind.

Oliver dribbled to the right edge of the big penalty area. Meriah was fully prepared, blocking his shooting angle, while also guarding against him passing to a teammate making an overlapping run in the middle. Captain Kane had already sprinted forward from the penalty spot.

Oliver's vision at this moment was like an eagle's eye from above. He clearly saw Kane's running trajectory. Then, as Oliver drew the defensive attention of both Meriah and Maloul, in that instant, he lightly tapped the ball with the outside of his right foot.

It wasn't a shot. Instead, it was a horizontal pass with just the right power and angle. The ball skimmed the grass, speeding through the narrow gap between Meriah and Maloul, precisely rolling towards the penalty spot. There, the unmarked Harry Kane arrived right on cue.

All the England Team captain had to do was adjust his steps and easily push the ball in with his right foot! The ball found the net! An open goal!

"GOOOOOOOOOOAL!!! Kane!!! Oliver with the assist! 3:1! Game sealed! Oliver! A goal and an assist! A perfect national team debut! The England Team secures their opening win in the World Cup!!!"

After scoring, Kane immediately pointed to Oliver, who had provided the assist, laughing as he rushed towards him, and the two embraced. All the England players gathered around again, this time, to celebrate the victory.

Southgate on the sideline, beaming, applauded vigorously. His most important substitution today had yielded a true genius, a sharp blade that could change the course of the game. Sterling's performance in this match was slightly below his expectations, but thankfully, Oliver changed the game after coming on.

Final whistle sounded, England defeated Tunisia 3:1. Volgograd Arena became a sea of joy for England fans. Oliver's name, through the stadium broadcast, through television signals, through countless social media, echoed throughout the world. He walked to the sideline and bowed deeply to the stands that were waving at the support signs for him.

Sweat soaked Ollie's jersey, and his heart was still pounding intensely. In his first World Cup match, with a breathtaking goal and a calm, deadly assist, he officially announced his arrival.
