Chapter 23 - Chapter 23 : The Trap

The 17th arrondissement felt wrong.

William had been in Paris long enough to develop instincts for the city's rhythms—the flow of pedestrians, the timing of traffic, the subtle architecture of normal that made anomalies visible. This street, with its elegant Haussmann buildings and expensive cars parked along the curb, should have felt like any other.

Instead, his PRC 12 was screaming.

"Something's off."

[ENVIRONMENTAL SCAN: Processing...]

[ANOMALIES DETECTED: Black sedan (diplomatic plates) idling 200 meters ahead. Pedestrian traffic below baseline for time of day. Window reflection showing second vehicle parked around corner.]

Torres's poison-pill intelligence had included the address of what he'd described as a decommissioned ICA safe house. William hadn't intended to use the information—the trap was obvious. But reconnaissance wasn't use. Walking past a building and observing its current status wasn't the same as acting on intel.

At least, that's what he'd told himself.

"You got curious. You got sloppy."

The black sedan's engine was running. Through the tinted windows, William could make out two figures—one in the driver's seat, scanning the street with the systematic attention of someone trained to watch. The second seat was empty.

Which meant the second operative was somewhere else.

[THREAT ASSESSMENT: ICA field response team detected]

[PROBABILITY: Torres flagged this address to internal security]

[RECOMMENDATION: Immediate extraction via alternate route]

William didn't turn around. Didn't change his pace. The worst thing he could do was signal awareness—trained operatives knew how targets behaved when they realized they were being watched. Instead, he adjusted his trajectory slightly, angling toward a boulangerie on the corner as if that had been his destination all along.

Footsteps behind him. Heavy but controlled. Professional.

"Don't turn. Don't react. You're just a man buying bread."

The bakery door chimed as William entered. Warm air, yeast and butter, the cheerful chaos of a neighborhood shop in the late morning. He approached the counter with the unhurried confidence of a regular customer.

"Un baguette, s'il vous plaît."

Through the window, he watched the man who'd been following him pass by. Tall, athletic, early thirties—moving with the kind of precise economy that came from years of fieldwork. Not making eye contact, not pausing, but clearly scanning.

[SYSTEM SCAN: ACTIVE]

[TARGET: Unknown ICA operative]

[COMBAT RATING: 34]

[ASSESSMENT: Competent field agent. Not a priority asset.]

Not 47. Wrong build, wrong movement signature. But the presence of a field team meant the safe house was active, which meant Torres's flag had triggered a response, which meant—

"If they escalate, 47 could be next."

[META-KNOWLEDGE ALERT: Agent 47 is available for priority verification tasks]

[PROBABILITY OF 47 ASSIGNMENT IF UNKNOWN-7 SIGHTING CONFIRMED: 67%]

The baguette landed in William's hands. He paid in cash, smiled at the clerk, and walked toward the back of the shop where a narrow hallway led to the rear exit.

"Service door. Delivery alley. Three blocks to the Métro."

The alley was empty. William moved quickly but didn't run—running attracted attention, running signaled guilt. He emerged onto a parallel street and fell into step with the lunch-hour crowd, just another Parisian professional with bread in his hand and somewhere to be.

Six blocks. Five. Four.

The Métro entrance appeared ahead, the familiar art nouveau metalwork marking the descent into the city's underground arteries. William took the stairs two at a time, swiped his pass, and disappeared into the crowd on the platform.

The train arrived in three minutes. William stepped aboard, found a seat near the center car, and let the doors close behind him.

Only then did the Predator's Calm allow him to process how close that had been.

[SITUATION ASSESSMENT: Extraction successful]

[EXPOSURE: Minimal (no direct contact, no confirmed identification)]

[HOWEVER: Torres's trap demonstrates sophisticated counterintelligence capability]

[WARNING: Target is not passive. Target is hunting.]

Torres had set a trap. Not the passive poison-pill test William had recognized, but an active operation—flagging an address to ICA security and waiting to see who showed up. If William had been less careful, if his PRC hadn't screamed, if the field team had been positioned differently—

"You'd be in an interrogation room right now. Or worse."

The baguette was still warm in his hands. William tore off a piece and ate it, the simple pleasure of fresh bread grounding him in his body while his mind raced through implications.

"Torres isn't trying to prove you're UNKNOWN-7. He's trying to catch UNKNOWN-7. He's hunting the same ghost the ICA is hunting, and he's using you as bait."

[ANALYSIS: Probable. Torres may believe catching UNKNOWN-7 will clear his name from internal affairs investigation.]

[IMPLICATION: Torres is now a direct threat, not merely a compromised asset.]

The train rattled through the tunnel, carrying William away from the 17th arrondissement and the trap he'd barely escaped. Through the window, his reflection stared back—the same face as always, but the expression was different now.

Calmer. Colder.

[OBSERVATION: User physiological response to near-capture is muted]

[CAUSE: Predator's Calm suppression active]

[ASSESSMENT: User should be experiencing elevated stress. Instead, user is eating bread.]

The system was right. He should be shaking, should be sweating, should be processing the fear of nearly being caught by the organization that had marked him for investigation. Instead, he was calmly analyzing the tactical implications while enjoying a fresh baguette.

"The fear is there. It just can't reach the surface anymore."

[CLARIFICATION: This is functioning as designed.]
