The ice elf no longer radiated open hostility. The fissures along her neck had slowed their leaking, frost working sluggishly to seal the worst of the thermal damage. She kept a measured distance from both Jason and the massive tear, posture wary but no longer coiled for an immediate killing exchange. Sparing her had shifted the dynamic. Ending hostilities on her side had been the rational response once lethal intent was no longer being met with lethal force.
Hesitation still ruled her.
Jason could see it in the way her colorless eyes tracked him. She had entered this world under clear instructions: locate and hunt the Marrow. Nothing in those orders had prepared her for a separate, independent will that claimed full ownership of it. In her framework, the Marrow was an ancient, possessive force that seized vessels. A creature-shaped carrier was expected. A creature who had conquered and subordinated that force was not. The distinction left her without an immediate script.
