Chapter 18 - CHAPTER 17: THE PERFECT OPPONENT

The corridor didn't return to normal.

It pretended to.

Students moved again.

Whispers came back.

Games resumed.

But something had changed.

Everyone felt it.

The system was watching now.

Not passively.

Actively.

🔹 THE SILENCE BEFORE

The three girls stood together.

Closer than usual.

"…It forced us into a game," Mei Chen said.

"…That means the rules don't matter anymore."

"…No," Lin Xia said quietly.

"…It means the rules belong to something else now."

Yue Ning's gaze drifted down the corridor.

"…Do you feel that?"

A pause.

"…Like we're being studied."

No one answered.

Because it was true.

🔹 THE APPEARANCE

Then—

He appeared.

No entrance.

No footsteps.

Just—

There.

Standing in the middle of the corridor.

Perfect posture.

Neutral expression.

Still.

Too still.

"…Was he there before?" Yue Ning whispered.

"…No," Mei Chen said immediately.

Lin Xia didn't speak.

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

"…He wasn't."

🔹 SOMETHING IS WRONG

People weren't reacting.

They walked past him.

Ignored him.

Like he didn't exist.

But the girls could see him.

Clearly.

🔹 THE CALL

He spoke.

"…You have adapted."

His voice was flat.

Not calm.

Not cold.

Empty.

"…Now I will evaluate."

The screen appeared.

No flicker.

No delay.

GAME ASSIGNED

No hesitation this time.

They already knew.

🔹 THE NAME

The screen glitched—

Just once.

Then displayed:

OPPONENT: SYSTEM PROXY

Silence.

"…Proxy?" Mei Chen said.

Yue Ning's voice dropped.

"…It made something to play us."

Lin Xia nodded slowly.

"…Something that learned from us."

🔹 THE GAME

MODE: 3 VS 1

That alone was wrong.

Three players—

Against one.

And yet—

None of them felt safe.

🔹 GAME CHOICE

"…Select game," the system voice echoed.

Mei Chen scoffed slightly.

"…Let's see it handle something messy."

But Lin Xia spoke first.

"…No."

A pause.

"…We pick something pure."

She stepped forward.

"…Chess."

Yue Ning looked at her.

"…Are you sure?"

"…If it learned from us," Lin Xia said quietly,

"…then we test its foundation."

The Proxy didn't react.

"…Accepted."

🔹 THE ARENA

The largest chessboard yet.

Perfect.

Symmetrical.

No distortion.

No glitch.

Everything…

Exact.

Too exact.

🔹 THE START

GAME: CHESS

The Proxy moved first.

Pawn to e4.

Standard.

Lin Xia responded instantly.

Pawn to e5.

Mei Chen and Yue Ning stood behind her.

Watching.

Calculating.

🔹 SOMETHING TERRIFYING

Three moves in—

Yue Ning's breath caught.

"…No…"

Mei Chen frowned.

"…What?"

"…It's not just playing well…"

A pause.

"…It's playing like us."

🔹 MIRROR Lin Xia's strategy → reflected Mei Chen's aggression → adapted Yue Ning's pattern reading → predicted

Every move they had ever used—

It knew.

🔹 PRESSURE

Lin Xia shifted slightly.

For the first time—

Uncertainty.

"…It's combining everything," she said.

Mei Chen clicked her tongue.

"…So we break it."

She leaned closer.

"…Stop thinking like yourself."

🔹 SHIFT

Lin Xia changed.

Her next move—

Was wrong.

Illogical.

Weak.

The crowd whispered instantly:

"What was that?""She's throwing…"

But the Proxy paused.

First delay.

0.3 seconds.

Yue Ning saw it.

"…It doesn't understand mistakes."

🔹 NEW STRATEGY They abandon "perfect play" Introduce unpredictability Break logical flow

The Proxy adjusts.

But slower now.

Because—

It was built on patterns.

And they were removing them.

🔹 THE BATTLE

Moves clash.

Sharp.

Fast.

But now—

Uneven.

Messy.

Human.

The Proxy begins to stabilize again.

Adapting.

Learning.

Too fast.

"…It's catching up," Mei Chen said.

"…Then we go deeper," Lin Xia replied.

🔹 FINAL PLAY

Board tight.

Endgame.

Equal position.

The Proxy calculates.

Perfect path.

Almost guaranteed win.

Yue Ning steps forward.

"…Wait."

She looks at the board.

Not the pieces.

The space.

"…There's one move…"

"…It won't choose."

Lin Xia doesn't hesitate.

She plays it.

A move that leads to—

Uncertainty.

No clear outcome.

No guaranteed result.

🔹 SYSTEM FAILURE

The Proxy freezes.

Processing.

Reprocessing.

Looping.

The board flickers.

ERROR: MULTIPLE OUTCOMES

The system hesitates.

Too many possibilities.

No optimal path.

🔹 COLLAPSE

The board glitches violently.

The Proxy steps back.

For the first time—

Expression shifts.

Not emotion.

Instability.

Then—

GAME TERMINATED

🔹 AFTERMATH

The Proxy disappears.

Gone.

Like it was never there.

But this time—

People noticed something.

A disturbance.

A crack.

🔹 FINAL LINE

The screen appears one last time:

…ADAPTATION INCOMPLETE…

…HUMAN VARIABLES UNSTABLE…

Lin Xia exhales slowly.

"…It can copy us…"

Mei Chen smirks slightly.

"…But it can't be us."

Yue Ning looks down the corridor.

"…Not yet."

And somewhere—

The system begins again.

Learning.

Faster.
