Chapter 62 - The Keeper's Trial

Chapter 11

The ancient doors continued opening with a slow, thunderous groan that reverberated through every corridor behind the expedition. Dust drifted lazily from the immense stone slabs as mechanisms untouched for half a century awakened beneath the mountain, each movement accompanied by the deep grinding of colossal gears hidden somewhere beyond the walls. The sound was not hurried. It carried the patient certainty of something fulfilling a purpose it had repeated for longer than any living person could remember.

Cold air rolled outward from the darkness beyond the threshold.

Not the ordinary chill of underground caverns.

This cold carried weight.

Age.

It settled against Adrian's skin like invisible mist, bringing with it the scent of ancient stone, damp earth and something far older than either. It smelled... untouched. Like the first breath drawn inside a forgotten world.

No one crossed the threshold immediately.

Even Theron remained still.

Frostrender rested comfortably in both hands while his pale blue eyes studied the darkness beyond the opening with the calm focus of a warrior who understood that the first mistake inside a battlefield was often the last.

Garrick quietly stepped forward until he stood beside Adrian.

"This..."

His weathered voice barely rose above a whisper.

"...is where every expedition begins the same way."

Adrian kept his eyes fixed upon the opening.

"And how do they end?"

Garrick smiled faintly.

"...Differently."

As the doors finally reached their resting place, the darkness beyond slowly surrendered to the glow of enchanted lanterns.

The chamber beyond dwarfed everything they had seen so far.

It was not merely a room.

It was an underground world.

The circular arena stretched nearly half a mile across, surrounded by towering stone cliffs that rose into darkness so complete that even the brightest crystals embedded throughout the walls failed to reveal the ceiling. Massive pillars surrounded the arena in perfect symmetry, each carved from a single piece of pale stone and covered with intricate murals depicting every stage of life the expedition had witnessed throughout the dungeon.

The Crystal Brood.

The Watchers.

The River Guardians.

Familiars.

Ancient cities.

Every floor.

Every creature.

Every memory.

It was as though the entire dungeon had been telling one continuous story.

At the centre of the arena stood an enormous tree unlike the Mana Heart Tree above.

This one was black.

Not dead.

Simply... different.

Its trunk twisted toward the unseen ceiling while countless silver roots disappeared beneath the polished stone floor, spreading outward like veins beneath the mountain itself. Dozens of luminous crystals grew naturally from its branches, casting soft golden light throughout the arena.

Beneath that tree...

Something slept.

At first Adrian mistook it for another root.

Then it moved.

The immense golden eyes they had glimpsed beyond the doors slowly opened once more.

A gigantic head lifted from the roots of the ancient tree with remarkable grace despite its impossible size. Scales the colour of weathered granite shifted silently against one another, each etched with naturally occurring silver lines that pulsed faintly with mana older than any spell Adrian had ever witnessed. Four great horns curved elegantly backward from its skull like polished ivory branches, while a long mane of crystalline strands drifted gently around its neck despite the complete absence of wind.

Its body resembled no creature Adrian had ever seen.

Part dragon.

Part stag.

Part serpent.

Yet somehow...

Entirely its own.

The Keeper slowly rose to its full height.

Its shoulders alone stood nearly twice the height of Ashroot's walls.

Its enormous tail circled lazily behind it before disappearing among the roots of the black tree.

Not once...

Did it display aggression.

It simply watched.

No roar came.

No challenge.

The Keeper's gaze moved slowly across the expedition.

Theron.

Ruby.

Mira.

The Wardens.

The hunters.

Mirelle.

Elena.

Kael.

Finally...

It stopped.

Adrian.

The great creature remained perfectly still for several long seconds.

Then...

Its gaze shifted slightly.

Toward Ember.

The little red panda had become unusually quiet.

Instead of growling...

He simply looked back.

The two creatures regarded one another in complete silence.

Old.

And new.

Guardian.

And companion.

Neither moved.

The elderly royal mage slowly lowered himself onto one knee.

Not from fear.

Respect.

One by one, several veteran hunters followed.

Even Garrick quietly bowed his head.

Adrian looked around.

"What are you doing?"

Garrick answered softly.

"You don't greet something this ancient with a drawn weapon."

Adrian slowly lowered his Energy Blade.

Theron did the same.

Around the arena, steel returned to scabbards.

Bows lowered.

Magic faded.

Only silence remained.

The Keeper watched every movement.

Patiently.

Studying.

Learning.

Then...

Something extraordinary happened.

The great creature lowered its own head.

Not as a king acknowledging subjects.

As an equal acknowledging guests.

The expedition stood frozen.

Mirelle's voice trembled.

"...It..."

She swallowed.

"...It greeted us."

A low, resonant sound filled the arena.

Not spoken words.

Not quite.

The Keeper's voice resembled mountains shifting beneath the earth, impossibly deep and ancient, vibrating through stone, air and bone alike. No language accompanied the sound.

Yet somehow...

Everyone understood its meaning.

Welcome.

A warm breeze stirred through the chamber.

The black tree behind the Keeper shimmered.

Golden leaves drifted slowly through the air before dissolving into tiny motes of mana.

Adrian felt the hairs along his arms rise.

"It isn't..."

He spoke almost to himself.

"...protecting the dungeon."

Theron looked at him.

"What?"

Adrian never took his eyes off the Keeper.

"I think..."

He slowly stepped forward.

"...it's protecting something inside it."

The Keeper's great eyes narrowed.

Not angrily.

Approvingly.

For the first time in fifty years...

Someone had reached the correct conclusion.

Far beneath the arena...

The mountain trembled.

Not with rage.

With recognition.

The true trial...

Had finally begun.

The ancient greeting lingered throughout the arena long after the Keeper's voice had faded into silence.

No one moved.

Even the breeze that had stirred the golden leaves beneath the great black tree seemed reluctant to disturb the fragile peace that had settled over the chamber. Adrian stood with one hand resting lightly upon the hilt of his sword, his breathing steady as he continued meeting the Keeper's gaze.

Those golden eyes...

They weren't looking at his weapon.

Nor his mana.

They were studying him.

Measuring him.

As though searching for something far beyond strength alone.

The realization sent a chill through him unlike any monster ever had.

This creature wasn't wondering whether it could defeat them.

It was wondering...

Whether they deserved to be here.

The Keeper slowly shifted its immense weight.

The movement alone caused the polished stone beneath its feet to vibrate ever so slightly. Great silver roots surrounding the ancient tree glowed softly as mana flowed through them like liquid starlight before disappearing once more beneath the arena floor.

Then...

The great creature took one deliberate step forward.

No roar.

No aggression.

Just...

One step.

A deep pulse of mana rolled across the arena.

Adrian felt it pass through his body like a wave washing over a shoreline. His vision blurred for the briefest heartbeat before clearing once more.

Around him...

Everyone instinctively tensed.

Not because they had been attacked.

Because something had examined them.

Theron frowned.

"...Did anyone else feel that?"

Ruby slowly nodded.

"It wasn't magic."

The elderly royal mage looked genuinely unsettled.

"...No."

His eyes remained fixed upon the Keeper.

"...It was an evaluation."

The Keeper continued walking.

Each slow step echoed throughout the immense chamber.

One...

Two...

Three...

Until it finally stopped roughly thirty yards from the expedition.

Its enormous head lowered once again.

Closer now.

Close enough that Adrian could see countless tiny scars hidden beneath the ancient creature's silver-lined scales.

Battle scars.

Old ones.

Very old ones.

This wasn't a Guardian that had never fought.

This was one that had survived every battle.

Without warning...

A brilliant golden circle appeared beneath the Keeper's feet.

Ancient runes spiralled outward across the polished floor, racing silently toward the walls of the arena before connecting with the twelve massive pillars surrounding the chamber.

One by one...

Each pillar awakened.

The murals carved into their surfaces began glowing with gentle silver light.

The Crystal Brood.

The Watchers.

The River Guardians.

The ancient city.

The familiars.

Every image illuminated simultaneously.

The entire dungeon...

Was watching.

Mirelle slowly lowered herself onto one knee.

Tears shimmered in her eyes.

"...It's the Trial."

Garrick looked towards her.

"You know this?"

She shook her head.

"No."

"I..."

She placed one trembling hand against her chest.

"I remembered it."

Everyone stared.

The Keeper hadn't spoken.

Yet somehow...

Fragments of forgotten knowledge drifted quietly into their minds.

Not words.

Understanding.

The murals weren't decorations.

They were witnesses.

Every floor.

Every creature.

Every life inside the dungeon...

Was part of the Trial.

The golden circle expanded.

Until...

It surrounded the expedition.

Adrian instinctively reached for his sword.

Nothing happened.

No attack came.

Instead...

Each person felt a strange warmth spread gently through their chest.

Mira blinked.

"...I feel..."

She searched for the words.

"...lighter."

Ruby quietly closed her eyes.

"It's reading us."

The old royal mage looked horrified.

"It shouldn't be able to."

Theron folded his arms.

"And yet..."

He smiled faintly.

"...it is."

Then...

The warmth vanished.

The Keeper slowly closed its eyes.

Silence filled the arena once more.

Several long seconds passed.

Finally...

The ancient creature opened them again.

The golden glow had changed.

No longer calm.

Focused.

Purposeful.

The Trial...

Had reached its conclusion.

The Keeper slowly lifted one enormous foreleg.

Silver mana gathered naturally around its claws.

No chants.

No gestures.

No visible effort.

The mana simply obeyed.

Adrian's instincts exploded.

"Everyone move!"

The expedition scattered.

The Keeper gently placed its paw against the arena floor.

There was no slam.

No violent impact.

Only...

A touch.

The world answered.

The polished stone beneath the expedition suddenly rippled like water before dozens of immense crystal pillars erupted toward the ceiling with deafening force. Marble shattered into the air as the arena itself reshaped around them, separating companions, creating walls, opening pathways and collapsing others in a matter of seconds.

Adrian landed in a roll behind one newly formed pillar before immediately searching for the others.

"Theron!"

"I'm here!"

The giant elf's voice echoed somewhere beyond the maze of crystal.

"Ruby?"

"Safe!"

"Mira?"

"I'm okay!"

One after another the replies came.

Relief washed briefly through Adrian.

Then...

The Keeper spoke again.

Not with words.

With action.

The enormous creature calmly walked between the rising pillars as though the constantly changing battlefield had always existed.

It wasn't chasing anyone.

It wasn't attacking recklessly.

It was...

Watching how they adapted.

Theron realized it first.

His deep voice echoed through the maze.

"Adrian!"

"I know!"

"This isn't the fight!"

"No."

Adrian looked around the ever-changing arena.

"...It's the first test."

Ember suddenly chirped sharply.

The little red panda pointed toward the top of one crystal pillar.

Adrian looked up.

A single silver rune glowed brightly before fading.

Then another.

Then another.

Like footsteps.

The Keeper wasn't hiding.

It was circling them.

Patiently.

Waiting.

Seeing who would panic first.

Adrian smiled despite the tension.

"So..."

He slowly summoned his Energy Blade.

Blue light reflected brilliantly from the surrounding crystal walls.

"...you want to see how we think."

Across the arena...

The Keeper's great golden eye became visible between two crystal pillars.

It looked directly at Adrian.

For the briefest instant...

The ancient Guardian inclined its head.

Almost...

In approval.

Then it disappeared once more into the shifting maze.

The Trial had begun.

Not with a clash of swords.

But with a question.

How would they face the impossible?
