Chapter 12
Part 1 - The Hunt Turns
They didn't stop running.
Not immediately.
Branches snapped behind them.
Heavy. Relentless.
The Dread Wolf wasn't chasing blindly.
It was tracking.
"...it's still on us," Adrian said, breathing controlled but tight.
"Yes," Elena replied calmly. "It will not stop."
"...great. Persistent murder dog."
"Focus, Adrian," Lilly said.
"I am focused," Adrian replied. "I'm focusing on not dying."
"...acceptable."
They pushed through the forest—
Then—
"Here!" a voice called out.
Adrian turned— Benjamin burst through the trees.
Kazer at his side.
Jok clinging to his shoulder like a chaotic parasite.
"I have returned!" Benjamin shouted dramatically.
"...you were gone for five minutes," Adrian said.
"AND I USED THEM WELL!" Benjamin replied.
"...fair enough."
"Everyone's clear," Benjamin added, tone shifting slightly more serious. "Merchants are safe."
Adrian exhaled.
"...good," Adrian said quietly.
One less thing to worry about.
Which meant—
He could focus on the problem still trying to kill them.
The trees behind them exploded outward—
The Dread Wolf emerged again.
This time—
Closer.
Faster.
Stronger.
"...yeah," Adrian muttered. "It definitely got worse."
"It adapted to us," Elena said.
"...rude."
The wolf didn't hesitate.
It lunged—
"SPREAD!" Lilly shouted.
They moved instantly.
The wolf slammed into the ground—
Claws tearing through earth—
Shockwave bursting outward—
Adrian barely kept his footing.
"...okay," Adrian said. "We need a better plan."
"We have one," Benjamin said.
Adrian glanced at him.
"...we do?" Adrian asked.
"Yes!" Benjamin said proudly.
A beat.
"...that's new," Adrian muttered.
Benjamin pointed dramatically at the wolf.
"We overwhelm it!" Benjamin declared.
Adrian stared at him.
"...that's not a plan," Adrian said.
"It is a strategy," Benjamin corrected.
"...it's a bad strategy."
"It is an enthusiastic strategy!"
"...still bad."
The wolf roared—
Conversation over.
It charged again—
This time—
Straight at Benjamin.
"...oh, that's personal," Benjamin said.
"KAZER!" he shouted.
The dog-like beast surged forward—
Intercepting—
Claws meeting claws—
Impact—
Kazer held—
For a second.
Then got thrown aside.
"...he tried," Adrian said.
Jok leapt from Benjamin's shoulder—
Landing on the wolf's back—
Claws digging in—
Hissing wildly.
"...I respect the commitment," Adrian said.
The wolf twisted—
Slamming itself sideways—
Jok went flying.
"...and the consequences," Adrian added.
"ENOUGH!" Elena called.
Wind surged—
Stronger than before—
Sharper—
Sky dove from above—
The air compressed—
Driving the wolf downward—
For a moment—
It worked.
"...now!" Elena shouted.
Adrian stepped forward— Fire formed instantly—
Controlled.
Focused.
Not rushed.
"...okay," Adrian said quietly.
He could feel it now.
Better than before.
Cleaner. Stronger.
"INFERNO BALL," Adrian said.
He didn't shout it this time.
Didn't need to.
He threw it! The attack hit—Exploding across the wolf's side—
Flames spreading, Burning...The wolf roared—
And staggered.
Actually staggered.
"...okay," Adrian said, surprised. "That's new."
"It's working," Lilly said.
"...barely," Adrian replied.
"Then we push it further!" Benjamin shouted.
"...you really like that strategy," Adrian muttered.
The wolf shook itself Burn marks deeper now.
Its breathing heavier.
But its eyes Still sharp.
Still dangerous.
"...yeah," Adrian said. "Still not dead."
"It won't fall easily," Elena said.
"...I gathered that."
The wolf lowered its body again Same stance as before.
But this time...Different. Heavier.
"...that's not good," Adrian said.
"It's preparing something," Lilly said.
"...of course it is."
The ground trembled slightly.
The air shifted Pressure building.
"...okay," Adrian said. "I officially hate phase two."
"Adrian," Elena said suddenly.
He looked at her.
Her gaze was focused. Serious.
"You can hurt it," Elena said.
A beat.
"...that feels like a setup," Adrian replied.
"You can hurt it," she repeated. "More than us."
Adrian blinked.
"...that's not comforting."
"You are adapting faster than it is," she said.
"...that's also not comforting."
"Then use it," Elena said.
A pause.
The wolf roared! Louder than before And then...It moved.
Faster than anything they'd seen yet.
Straight for Adrian.
"...okay," Adrian said. "Definitely personal."
He didn't step back.
Didn't run.
He raised his hand—
Fire formed—
But something else—
Pulled.
Inside him.
That same feeling.
Cold.
Hungry.
Familiar.
"...oh," Adrian said quietly.
The runes flickered—
— Skill Interaction Detected —
Predatory Assimilation (Unstable)
Compatibility: Partial
Risk: High
[Consume] [Stabilize] [Ignore]
Adrian stared at it for half a second.
"...that sounds like a terrible idea," Adrian muttered.
The wolf was already on him—
No time.
No room to think.
"...yeah," Adrian said.
"...we're doing terrible ideas now."
He reached forward—
Not with fire. Not with ice. Something else.
Something deeper.
"Come here," Adrian muttered.
The wolf lunged And Adrian didn't dodge.
He stepped into it.
Part 2 - Bite Back
The wolf came at him like a collapsing wall.
Fast.
Heavy.
Unstoppable.
Adrian didn't move.
"...this is a terrible idea," Adrian said.
Then he stepped forward anyway.
Impact—
Didn't happen the way it should have.
Instead of claws tearing into him—
Instead of teeth ripping through—
His arm shifted.
Not just stretching.
Not just reacting.
It opened.
Viscous. Fluid. Hungry.
The wolf's jaws hit—
And sank into something that wasn't flesh.
For a split second Everything paused.
"...oh," Adrian said quietly.
Then Pain.
Not sharp. Not clean.
Overwhelming.
Like something was trying to force itself into him—
And something else was trying to tear it apart at the same time.
"ADRIAN!" Elena shouted.
"DON'T TOUCH HIM!" Benjamin yelled immediately.
They felt it.
The air changed.
Cold.
Heavy.
Wrong.
Adrian's vision blurred—
Golden runes flickering violently—
— Assimilation Attempt Active —
Target: Dread Wolf
Tier Conflict: CRITICAL
Structure Integrity: UNSTABLE
Override Risk: EXTREME
[CONTINUE] [ABORT]
"...of course it's extreme," Adrian muttered through clenched teeth.
The wolf thrashed Violently Trying to pull free
But Adrian held on.
Not physically.
Something deeper.
"...you don't get to just eat people," Adrian said, voice strained.
The slime around his arm pulsed Pulling. Dragging.
Trying to take.
The wolf roared Not just anger...Resistance.
It wasn't prey.
It was fighting back.
Hard.
Adrian's body trembled
"...okay," Adrian said, breathing uneven. "Yeah... this is worse than I thought."
"ADRIAN, LET GO!" Lilly shouted.
"...working on it!" Adrian snapped.
He wasn't.
Because something inside him Didn't want to.
It wanted more.
"ADRIAN!" Elena's voice cut through everything.
Clear. Grounded.
"YOU'RE LOSING CONTROL!"
"...I noticed!" Adrian replied.
The runes flickered again More violently
— Assimilation Threshold Exceeded —
Foreign Will Detected
Dominance Required
[ASSERT AUTHORITY]
Adrian blinked.
"...oh," Adrian said.
That...That felt important.
The wolf surged Pulling back Trying to tear free Adrian's arm stretched Further
Too far.
"...okay," Adrian muttered. "We're committing now."
He stepped forward again "HEY!" Adrian shouted.
The wolf froze. Just for a second Its eyes locked onto his.
"...you're in my way," Adrian said.
Not loud. Not dramatic.
But something Shifted.
The air Pressed down.
Not force. Not magic.
Presence.
The wolf hesitated.
Not fear. Recognition.
"...I don't know what I am yet," Adrian said, voice steady despite everything.
"...but I know one thing."
The slime surged "YOU DON'T GET TO DECIDE THAT!"
The pull intensified The wolf roared And this time It started to lose ground.
"IT'S WORKING!" Benjamin shouted.
"KEEP GOING!" Lilly added.
Elena didn't speak.
She just watched.
Focused. Concerned.
Because she could feel it.
The balance shifting. Not just the wolf.
Adrian.
The slime crept further Up the wolf's jaw Across its neck Trying to consume To absorb Fragments broke away. Energy Structure. Something deeper
And flooded into Adrian.
"—AH—!" Adrian gasped.
Pain And something else Knowledge.
Instinct. Violence. Hunger.
"...okay," Adrian said, voice shaking now. "Yeah... that's a lot."
The wolf surged again One final, violent push And broke free.
The connection snapped Adrian was thrown backward
Hard.
He hit the ground Rolling
"...okay," Adrian groaned. "Definitely not doing that cleanly yet."
The wolf stumbled back too Breathing heavier now.
Slower. Wounded.
Not just physically.
Something deeper.
"...we hurt it," Lilly said.
"...yeah," Adrian replied, pushing himself up slowly.
"But not enough," Elena added.
Adrian looked at the wolf. Then at his hand. It trembled slightly.
Not weak. Unstable.
"...I took something," Adrian said quietly.
"WHAT?" Benjamin asked.
"...not sure," Adrian replied. "But it didn't like it."
The wolf growled Lower now. More cautious.
"...good," Adrian muttered. "Feeling's mutual."
It circled now. No longer charging blindly.
Thinking. Adapting again.
"...we pushed it," Lilly said.
"...yeah," Adrian replied.
He exhaled slowly.
"...but we didn't finish it."
The wolf lowered its body again One last stance. One last push.
"...okay," Adrian said, straightening slightly.
Fire flickered in his hand Stronger now. More stable.
"...round three," Adrian said.
Elena stepped beside him. Wind rising.
"...this time," she said quietly—
"...we end it."
Adrian glanced at her Then back at the wolf.
"...yeah," Adrian said.
"...let's not drag this out."
The wolf roared And charged.
Part 3 - Burn It Down
The wolf came faster than before.
Not reckless. Not wild. Desperate.
"...yeah," Adrian muttered, flames flickering in his palm, "that's never a good sign."
"Stay focused!" Elena said, wind already gathering around her.
"I am focused," Adrian replied. "I'm focusing on the giant death wolf sprinting at me."
"...good."
Lilly stepped forward Shield raised
"Last push," Lilly said.
"...finally," Adrian muttered.
The Dread Wolf lunged Lilly met it head-on The impact thundered through the clearing.
She held For a second Then slid back, boots digging into the ground.
"...okay," Lilly said through clenched teeth, "that's everything I've got."
"Then don't break!" Benjamin shouted.
"...wasn't planning to!"
Kazer darted in Snapping at the wolf's flank Pulling its attention Jok followed
Leaping wildly Claws scraping Chaos incarnate.
"...I don't know what your plan is," Adrian muttered, watching Jok, "but I respect the energy."
The wolf twisted Striking outward Kazer barely dodged
Jok got launched again.
"...and the consequences," Adrian added.
"Adrian!" Elena called.
He turned Her eyes locked onto his.
Calm. Focused. Certain.
"This is it," Elena said.
A beat.
Adrian nodded.
"...yeah," Adrian said.
No jokes. No deflection.
Just Understanding.
"Lilly!" Elena called.
"I've got it!" Lilly replied, bracing again.
"Benjamin!" Adrian shouted.
"I am ready!" Benjamin declared, already gathering mana.
"...good," Adrian said. "Because I'm out of backup plans."
The wolf broke through Lilly's guard Not fully But enough It surged forward
"NOW!" Elena shouted.
Wind exploded outward Sky dove from above The air twisted Compressed Focused.
Not wild. Controlled. Directed Toward Adrian.
"...okay," Adrian said quietly.
Fire formed. Not rushed. Not unstable.
Perfect.
For the first time It listened.
"...about time," Adrian muttered.
The flame grew Larger than before Denser Brighter The heat warped the air around him.
Benjamin slammed his staff into the ground
"EARTH BIND!" Benjamin shouted.
The ground surged upward Grabbing at the wolf's legs Slowing it Just enough.
Lilly stepped in Shield slamming forward Holding it in place
"DO IT!" Lilly shouted.
The wolf roared Fighting Breaking But too late.
Adrian stepped forward. Not back. Never back.
"...Elena," Adrian said.
"I'm with you," Elena replied.
The wind surged again Stronger. Feeding the flames Turning them violent Unstable But controlled through her.
"...right," Adrian said.
He pulled his arm back Fire compressing "...let's end this."
"NOW!" Elena shouted.
"INFERNO BALL!" Adrian roared.
He threw it The wind caught it instantly Amplified, Twisted The flames exploded forward—
A roaring inferno Brighter than anything before Hotter Faster It slammed into the Dread Wolf—
Point blank. The explosion shook the clearing Fire engulfed everything
The roar of the flames drowned out everything else For a moment There was nothing but light.
Heat. And silence. Then The flames died down.
Slowly. Revealing Stillness. The Dread Wolf stood there—
Burned. Broken. Then It collapsed.
The ground trembled slightly as it hit.
And didn't move again.
Silence.
Real silence. Adrian stood there, arm still extended.
Breathing heavy.
"...okay," Adrian said after a moment.
"...that worked."
No one spoke. Then—
Benjamin raised a hand.
"I WOULD LIKE TO OFFICIALLY SAY—" Benjamin started.
"Don't," Lilly said immediately.
"...understood," Benjamin replied.
Kazer barked once.
Jok... somehow landed on Adrian's shoulder again.
"...how do you keep doing that?" Adrian asked.
Jok hissed proudly.
"...yeah, that tracks."
Elena stepped forward slowly.
She looked at the wolf Then at Adrian.
"...you did it," Elena said quietly.
Adrian shook his head slightly.
"...we did it," Adrian replied.
A pause.
Elena smiled faintly.
"...yes," Elena said. "We did."
Sky circled above Letting out a soft, echoing call.
The forest felt different now. Lighter.
Like something heavy had finally been removed.
Adrian exhaled slowly.
"...so," Adrian said, glancing around, "anyone else feel like that could've gone worse?"
"...significantly worse," Lilly replied.
"...good. Just checking."
He looked down at his hand again.
No fire. No frost.
Just Him.
"...huh," Adrian muttered.
The runes flickered softly
— Target Eliminated —
Assimilation Partial
New Traits Available (Dormant)
Processing Required
Adrian stared at it for a second.
"...yeah," Adrian said quietly.
"...we're dealing with that later."
He looked back at the team.
At the clearing.
At what they'd just done.
"...we actually did it," Adrian said.
This time No sarcasm. Just truth.
