Chapter 20 - CHAPTER 20 – No Way Out

There's something about crossing a line you can't uncross.

It doesn't happen loudly.

There's no warning.

No clear moment where everything stops and tells you—this is it.

It just… happens.

And by the time you realize it—

You're already too far gone.

I felt it now.

Clearer than ever.

Standing in front of him, close enough to feel his presence wrap around me like something I couldn't escape…

I knew.

This wasn't something temporary.

This wasn't something I could walk away from when it got too intense.

This wasn't something I could control anymore.

This was real.

And I was in it.

Completely.

"You're thinking again," he said quietly.

I let out a small breath, shaking my head slightly.

"I always am around you."

A faint smirk touched his lips.

"That's your problem."

I looked up at him, my eyes narrowing slightly.

"And what's yours?"

He didn't hesitate.

"You."

My breath caught.

That…

That shouldn't have affected me the way it did.

But it did.

Because he didn't say it like a joke.

Didn't say it like something light.

He said it like it was the truth.

And that made my heart react before I could stop it.

"You say things like that too easily," I muttered.

"I don't," he replied.

I looked at him again, searching his face.

"Then why does it feel like you do?"

"Because you're not used to hearing the truth like that," he said.

Silence.

That again.

His honesty.

It always hit deeper than I expected.

"I don't know if I like that," I said softly.

"You do," he replied immediately.

I let out a quiet breath, almost laughing.

"You really don't give me room to deny anything, do you?"

"No," he said simply.

Of course not.

That would be too easy.

And nothing about this was easy.

"You're impossible," I said.

"And yet you're still here," he replied.

My chest tightened.

That again.

Always that.

Because no matter what I said, no matter how much I tried to push back—

I stayed.

And he knew it.

"I don't like how much you understand me," I admitted quietly.

His gaze softened slightly.

"I'm not trying to understand you," he said.

I frowned.

"Then what are you doing?"

He stepped closer.

Slow.

Intentional.

"I'm just seeing you."

My breath caught.

Seeing me.

Not guessing.

Not assuming.

Not trying to figure me out.

Just… seeing me.

And somehow…

That felt more intense than anything else.

Because it meant there was nowhere to hide.

No walls.

No distance.

No pretending.

"You make it hard to stay guarded," I said softly.

"Then stop guarding yourself," he replied.

My heart pounded harder.

"You make that sound simple."

"Maybe it is," he said.

I shook my head slightly.

"No," I whispered.

"This isn't simple."

He stepped even closer now, until there was barely any space left between us.

"It feels simple," he said quietly.

And that was the problem.

Because no matter how complicated I tried to make it—

The way I felt when I was with him…

That part was simple.

Too simple.

"I don't think I can stop this," I admitted.

My voice came out softer than I expected.

More honest.

More real.

He didn't react right away.

He just looked at me.

Like he was waiting for something more.

"I don't think I want to stop," I added quietly.

There it was.

The truth.

Fully spoken.

And once it was out…

There was no taking it back.

His gaze darkened slightly, something shifting in his expression.

"Say that again," he said.

My heart skipped.

"What?"

"What you just said."

My breath caught.

I hesitated for a second.

But only a second.

"I don't want to stop," I repeated.

Silence.

Heavy.

And then—

Something changed.

Not just in him.

In everything.

The air felt different.

The space between us felt smaller.

The tension felt sharper.

Real.

Too real.

"You shouldn't say things like that if you don't mean them," he said quietly.

"I do mean it," I replied immediately.

No hesitation.

No doubt.

Just truth.

And that was the moment everything shifted.

Because now…

There was nothing left unsaid.

Nothing left hidden.

Nothing left to pretend about.

"You have no idea what you're doing," he said softly.

My heart pounded harder.

"Then tell me," I whispered.

He stepped closer—

If that was even possible.

"You're making it impossible for me to hold back," he said.

My breath caught.

And for the first time…

I understood exactly what that meant.

"Then don't," I said quietly.

The words came out before I could think.

Before I could stop them.

Before I could protect myself from what they meant.

But I didn't regret them.

Not even a little.

Because this—

Whatever this was—

It had already gone too far.

There was no holding back anymore.

No slowing down.

No stepping away.

No pretending it wasn't as intense as it felt.

It was.

And I was done trying to act like it wasn't.

His eyes searched mine, like he was looking for hesitation.

For doubt.

For anything that would make him stop.

But there was nothing.

Just certainty.

And maybe that was what pushed everything over the edge.

Because the next thing I felt—

Was him closing the distance completely.

And suddenly…

There was no space left.

No room for thoughts.

No room for questions.

No room for anything but what was happening.

And for the first time…

I didn't overthink it.

I didn't hesitate.

I didn't try to hold on to control.

I just… let it happen.

Because the truth was—

There was no way out anymore.

And I wasn't trying to find one.
