Chapter 28 - Old man with a cool cane

It couldn't be anything else; it was Earth's solar system!

Jack couldn't take his eyes off it. This was something he didn't expect to happen.

It was when a man to his left, behind a table that had unlit candles and religious items on it, spoke his name in a surprised voice. "Jack?"

He was dressed in a priestly undercoated robe and had dark hair like any other local to this town that Jack had seen.

"Jack, I heard from Aldric that you are alright." He caught his voice before continuing. "It's good to see you in good health."

Mr. Randam looked at Jack. This was the first time he heard his name; he never asked him about it. Nevertheless, he was glad that Jack and this man knew each other, because this man was a deacon of the church and assistant of the priest. He might be more inclined to helping them.

Jack looked at the man and then at Mr. Randam and said, "Thank you, but I'm here to request something." He presented Mr. Randam to the man. "But before that, this is Mr. Randam. I don't think you've met."

Mr. Randam spoke, correcting Jack. "Actually, I met with Deacon Lucius."

Good. Now I have his name. Thanks for the assistance, Randam.

Jack spoke. "Then I'll get to the point. We need a church's observer as a witness for a possible confession."

Lucius looked at Jack. "I already know of Mr. Randam's matter. Priest Aldwin already informed us to not get more involved."

He continued. "And I am the only one at the church today. The Priest, Deacons, and Trainees are preparing for the first guidance rituals."

The first guidance? Is it some sort of holiday? Why did it have to happen today?!

We already bribed a guard; we just need a legitimate witness!

"Listen, we just need a legitimate witness. It's just a few hours." Lucius counter-argued. "I can't just leave the church unwatched. There needs to be at least a single member of the clergy present at all times."

Maybe if I play on empathy? "Lucius, I understand you need to follow doctrine, but right now there is a man in your church who is fearing that his family might be in danger if he doesn't do anything about it."

Jack continued, his emotions surged as the pressure in his kidney slightly alleviated as it somehow went past the seal. "Just yesterday he was willing to beg on his knees while crying in the middle of a camp of another church." Jack felt as if an emotion he kept suppressing for years—no, a lifetime—arose from him.

He now spoke out of instinct, and the pressure increased its power over his speech. This was the original Jack's will; it might have been it that allowed the pressure to slightly escape.

"Is this how a church preaching mercy and guidance does things?"

Lucius was left speechless. He was thinking about how to respond when he heard clapping from deeper inside the church.

It was from a pale old man with graying long hair, hazel green eyes, and a smile that revealed two canines separated by two front teeth that looked slightly vampiric.

The man spoke while laughing. "Brilliant!"

His clothing was a high-class violet-green suit with a bolo tie that had a violet-green gem. He had a cane with a bronze head in his right hand.

"Forgive me for intruding into your conversation," he moved his cane to his left hand as he moved to shake Jack's hand, still smiling, "but I couldn't just sit by when such a righteous young man tries to do good but is unable to do so."

Jack felt a parent-like vibe from the old man in front of him. Jack shook the man's hand as the old man spoke yet again.

"My name is Victor, and I'd like to help you on the legitimate witness request."

Mr. Randam, who was finally out of his daze, looked at old man Victor and said, "Is it truly possible?"

The old man spoke after moving the cane to his right hand. "Not only is it possible, but depending on what I hear, I—" He hit his cane tip on the ground "—may take action myself!"

Jack looked at the man's eyes, and he felt from the depths of his soul and body that he should accept this man's offer. It was like fighting a cough while being sick.

"I will accept your offer," Jack said, slightly hesitant.

"Alright then, please lead the way." The man spoke, still smiling. "Let's not let this criminal get his way any longer!"
