Chapter 102 - Ch.100 Manhattan

He had thought about the battle of Manhattan for sixteen years. In Jason Park's memory, he had read about it as a climactic sequence in a children's book — the kind of final act where stakes are announced clearly and the good side triumphs after an appropriately difficult struggle. In his own life, he had been planning it since he was six years old as an event to be navigated, an environment to be managed, a moment to be survived and used well.

Neither version had prepared him for the actual quality of it, which was this: the city going wrong.

New York City did not go quiet often. Its baseline noise was its identity — the layers of it, the cabs and the construction and the ten thousand conversations at once, the specific organized chaos of eight million people sharing the same grid. When that noise changed — when the city registered, through some collective nervous system that had no biological explanation but existed nonetheless, that something was deeply wrong — the change was palpable. Not silence. Something worse: the conditional quality of sound that occurs when an organism that should be moving freely is holding very still.

The Mist was doing significant work. The Mist was always doing significant work in New York, which had more divine activity per square mile than almost anywhere else in the country, but the Mist during the battle of Manhattan was straining — the scale of what it was concealing pressing against its capacity the way a net strains when the weight caught in it exceeds its design tolerance.

He had entered the city through Queens with the Threshold Network, crossing from Long Island in a convoy that Theron drove with the systematic care of someone who had navigated divine conflict before and knew that ordinary traffic management was still important even when armies were moving. They had crossed the Queensboro Bridge in the small hours of the morning and established their position in Midtown before dawn.

The Threshold Network's assignment was Midtown East — specifically the blocks surrounding the Empire State Building, which was the central strategic objective of the battle. Not the building itself — Percy's group and the main Olympian-cabin demigods would be managing the building's interior and the approach to the 600th floor. The network's role was the external environment: the streets and intersections and thresholds where Kronos's forces would try to establish positions, the gaps between the main defensive lines where smaller units would slip through if no one was watching.

He stood at the corner of Fifth and 42nd in the pre-dawn Manhattan and felt the city's shimmer around him — wrong, dense with the specific quality of divine forces massing, the Titan-energy a cold wrongness under the city's usual warm chaos — and he ran the Crossroads Sight.

Two futures. Both present. Both real. The gap between them was not certainty; it was the gap where choices happened.

He thought: show up. Do the work. Trust what was built.
