"You want me to put my life in your hands?"
"Your life is perfectly safe in my hands."
Before I could retort, he grabbed my waist. In a literal blur of motion—a sensation of being pulled through a vacuum—the ground vanished. I screamed, the sound echoing off the concrete, and suddenly we were standing at the very tip of the bridge's highest point, looking down at the black water below.
I tried to push him away, but his grip was like iron.
"I have powers, Mirabel," he said, his voice calm against the wind. "I am a supernatural being. I am not a weak human."
My eyes were wide, my brain refusing to process the physics of what had just happened. "How...?"
And then, in another blink, we were back on the ground, exactly where we had been standing before the jump. He released me, and I stumbled, blinking rapidly.
"You... you really have powers," I breathed.
