Tobin's coat dripped water onto the floorboards, and the bundle in his hands kept glowing.
"Tobin," I said quickly, before Liora could ask a single question, "did you get the extra chisels from the smith? Malachi needs them for the wall thing. The stone thing. You know."
Tobin blinked at me, clearly having no idea what wall thing I was talking about, because there was no wall thing. Malachi did not blink. Malachi understood immediately.
"Right," Malachi said, already moving toward the door. "The chisels. Forgot about those."
"You forgot about the chisels," Pearl repeated, deadpan, not even looking up from her tea.
"I forget things," Malachi said. "It's a flaw."
Tobin caught on half a second later and wrapped the bundle tighter under his coat like it was nothing at all. "Right. Come on then, before the smith closes up shop."
Liora's eyes tracked all three of us, curious in that soft, harmless way she always managed. "Do you need help carrying anything back?"
