The morning didn't feel like a normal morning anymore.
Even before the bell rang, the atmosphere in the school had changed. Conversations were quieter, movements more controlled, and even the most careless students seemed aware of something they couldn't fully explain.
Nya noticed it the moment she stepped through the school gates.
Groups that once laughed loudly now spoke in low tones. Students who used to walk confidently now checked their surroundings more often. Eyes moved more. Minds were more alert.
Good.
That meant the game was evolving.
She adjusted her bag slightly and continued forward, her pace steady. Every step was intentional, every glance calculated. She wasn't just walking to class.
She was entering a battlefield.
Ahead, she spotted Kaito leaning near the staircase, scrolling through his phone but clearly not focused.
"You look like you didn't sleep," Nya said as she approached.
Kaito glanced up, scoffing. "Yeah, no shit. Whole school's acting weird. Ever since that guy showed up…"
"Mirion," Nya said calmly.
Kaito clicked his tongue. "Yeah, him. People are already switching up. Acting like he's some king or something."
Nya tilted her head slightly. "And you're reacting to it."
"I'm not reacting," Kaito snapped. Then paused. "…I'm just watching."
Nya gave a faint smile.
Liar.
But she didn't say it.
Instead, she walked past him toward the classroom. Kaito followed, clearly unwilling to be left behind in whatever was unfolding.
Class 2B was already filled when they entered.
But it wasn't noisy.
That was the first sign.
Students were present, but the usual morning chaos was gone. Conversations were short. Glances were sharp. Even the scraping of chairs felt… controlled.
Ren was already at the back.
Of course.
Leaning slightly in his chair, his green eyes moved across the room, not in curiosity, but in quiet evaluation. He wasn't part of the tension.
He was measuring it.
Nya took her seat near the window, placing her notebook on the desk. Her pencil rested between her fingers, but she didn't write yet.
She observed.
Then…
The door opened.
Mirion walked in.
No announcement. No introduction this time.
And yet the entire room shifted.
Some students straightened subconsciously. Others avoided looking at him. A few stared, unable to help themselves.
Mirion said nothing.
He simply walked to his seat.
Sat down.
And looked at the room.
That was all.
But it was enough.
Nya's eyes narrowed slightly.
He's not just observing anymore.
He's applying pressure.
The teacher entered shortly after, trying to maintain normalcy.
"Good morning, class. Today we'll be doing something a bit different."
A few students exchanged looks.
Different had become dangerous.
"You will be given a problem. But this time… you won't solve it alone. You will compete."
That word landed.
Compete.
"You will form small groups. Each group will present a solution. The class will evaluate which group demonstrates the most efficient and strategic thinking."
Murmurs spread instantly.
Competition meant comparison.
Comparison meant hierarchy.
And hierarchy… meant power.
Nya didn't look at the teacher anymore.
She looked at Mirion.
He hadn't reacted.
But that was the reaction.
Groups began forming.
Students moved quickly, choosing familiar faces, safe options. Alliances formed based on comfort, not strategy.
Weak.
Nya stayed seated.
Kaito approached her immediately. "We're teaming up."
Not a question.
She looked at him, then past him… toward the back.
Ren hadn't moved.
Mirion hadn't moved either.
Interesting.
Before she could respond, a voice cut in.
"Mind if I join?"
The tone was calm.
Controlled.
Everyone nearby froze.
Mirion.
Kaito stiffened instantly. "You… wanna join us?"
Mirion looked at him briefly. Not long enough to be considered attention.
"Unless you'd prefer not to compete seriously."
Silence.
Kaito clenched his jaw. His pride flared, but logic held him back.
"…Fine," he muttered.
Nya said nothing.
But her mind was already moving.
This isn't random.
He chose this group on purpose.
The three sat together.
For the first time, Ren looked directly at them.
Not at Kaito.
Not even at Mirion.
At Nya.
A silent question.
Why are you there?
Nya met his gaze briefly.
Because this is where the game is.
Then she looked away.
The problem sheet was placed on their desk.
Complex. Multi-layered. Designed to confuse.
Kaito immediately started talking.
"Alright, so we split this. I'll handle the first part, you—"
"Stop."
Mirion's voice cut through him.
Not loud.
But absolute.
Kaito froze.
Nya watched carefully.
Mirion didn't even look at him.
"You're thinking in fragments," Mirion continued. "That's inefficient."
Kaito frowned. "Then what, you got a better idea?"
Mirion finally looked at the paper.
Then spoke.
"We solve it as a system. Not parts."
Nya's eyes sharpened.
Same approach as Ren.
But different intent.
Ren observes to understand.
Mirion observes to control.
"Explain," Nya said quietly.
Mirion glanced at her.
For a second… something shifted.
Recognition.
"You already see it," he said.
Not praise.
Acknowledgment.
Nya leaned slightly forward, her pencil finally moving.
"Variables first. Dependencies second. Then eliminate unnecessary paths."
Mirion nodded once.
Kaito looked between them. "Okay… I get it, but—"
"You don't," Mirion said calmly.
Kaito's jaw tightened.
"You're reacting," Mirion continued. "Not thinking."
That hit.
Hard.
Kaito went silent.
Nya noticed.
Mirion wasn't just solving the problem.
He was dismantling people.
Time moved.
Other groups argued. Voices rose. Some laughed nervously. Others panicked.
But this group…
Was quiet.
Deadly quiet.
Nya wrote. Mirion guided. Kaito followed, reluctantly but effectively.
And at the back…
Ren watched.
Closely.
Halfway through, Mirion leaned back slightly.
"Interesting," he murmured.
Nya glanced at him. "What?"
"Everyone here," he said, eyes scanning the room, "thinks this is about solving a problem."
A pause.
"It's not."
Nya didn't respond.
But she understood.
It's about control.
Influence.
Dominance.
When presentations began, the room filled with tension.
Groups went first. Some confident, some shaky.
Mistakes were made. Logic broke down. Pressure exposed weaknesses.
Then…
"Next group."
Nya stood.
Kaito followed.
Mirion stood last.
The room shifted again.
They presented.
Nya explained structure.
Clear. Logical. Precise.
Kaito added energy.
Confidence. Presence.
Then Mirion stepped forward.
And finished it.
His voice was calm.
But it carried.
"You're all approaching this incorrectly," he said, looking at the class.
Not arrogant.
Just factual.
"You focus on answers. But answers are outcomes."
A pause.
"What matters… is control over the process that creates them."
Silence.
No one moved.
No one spoke.
"You rush. You react. You compete blindly," he continued. "And then you wonder why you lose."
His gaze swept the room.
Then stopped briefly on Ren.
"…Pathetic."
The word landed like a blade.
Kaito felt it.
The class felt it.
Even the teacher hesitated.
But Ren…
Didn't react.
At all.
He simply leaned back.
And smiled.
Slightly.
Nya's heart beat once.
Sharp.
This is it.
The clash has started.
After class, the hallway buzzed.
Students whispered louder now. Reactions were mixed.
"He's insane…"
"Did you hear what he said?"
"He just called everyone out…"
Kaito walked beside Nya, silent for once.
Then he muttered, "That guy… he's different."
Nya nodded slightly.
"Yeah," she said.
"But so is Ren."
At the end of the hall…
Ren stood alone.
Looking out the window.
Mirion walked past him.
Stopped.
Just for a second.
No words.
Just presence.
Then he continued walking.
Ren's voice came quietly.
"You talk too much."
Mirion stopped.
Half-turned.
"And you," Mirion replied calmly, "don't talk enough."
Silence.
Tension.
Perfect balance.
Nya watched from a distance.
And smiled faintly.
The board is set.
The players are moving.
And now…
The real game begins.
