It's been two months since that storm, and it hasn't rained a single day since. Momma and papa won't let me venture out very far without an adult, but according to papa and Roxy, most of the creeks have dried up and the nearby river is getting lower every day. As for the farmland–

"It isn't looking good Zenith." I overheard papa explaining in the other room.

Me and Rudy were listening closely around the corner making sure they couldn't see us.

"What does not good look like?" momma pressed.

"Well about two fields of crops are just lost, and it won't be long before the others start to go."

"Two fields already? What about using water from the river?"

Papa gripped the back of his neck.

"We're trying to be careful on that front. If we use too much water from the river too quickly we won't have enough water to last the rest of the summer. We can save a few fields, but we have to prioritize the Vatirus fields because they bring in the most revenue. The tradeoff is that we'll have a lot less food, and that isn't good either."

 "Is the revenue important?"

"It pays the territory taxes and gives us a surplus to fall back on if we have to buy extra seeds for next year. Yeah, the revenue is kind of the only way we can prevent a worst case scenario."

Momma's eyes widened and she slowly started to look worried. Papa snapped his head when he noticed and then sheepishly rubbed the back of his head.

"Hey, don't worry yourself about the crops. It's not like we're farmers, that's for them to figure out. I just kind of feel bad for them and wanted to give you a bit of a heads up for what the rest of the year will look like."

"As in we need to be careful with our food supplies?"

"Yeah. Something like that. It's fine if you don't have any ideas on how we can help them out. It's not like they'll be ruined if most of the crops fail, it's just going to suck for a while."

Momma placed a hand on her chin. "Hmm… ideas…" she pondered.

I looked beside me to see Rudy with a hand on his chin like he was thinking about ideas as well. At that moment, he and momma looked like twins.

"There you two are!" we heard a voice call out from behind us.

We looked behind to see Roxy behind us trying her hardest to look pissed.

"You two are late for your lessons this morning!" she scolded, but we could tell she wasn't mad. Not really.

At first when she first started giving us lessons, Roxy was very strict with us and lesson attendance, but the further ahead in our studies we got, the more relaxed she became. At first it came out as pure satisfaction that we were staying on track, but then it turned into nervous anticipation in a matter of weeks which we eventually figured out was because we were actually getting ahead. A month later, we weren't just ahead, she let slip that we were actually stupidly far ahead. Our studies were progressing so far she couldn't keep up.

As the voices of momma and papa carried over from the other room, Roxy looked at us and where we were, then realized what we were up to.

"Are you two trying to eavesdrop on your parents?! You bad kids. Let them have their alone time!" she scolded dragging us off.

"Really! You two should know better!"

It wasn't long before we were in the middle of magic lessons again with a fresh face trying her best to follow what was happening. That's right, just like agreed, Aneste was watching our lessons from the side. I tried initially to convince Roxy to help Aneste when she was struggling to grasp certain concepts, but Roxy wouldn't compromise even a bit for the sake of professionalism.

I tried teaching her after our lessons myself, but it turns out I'm a terrible teacher. Rudy watched from the sides, nodding his head and giving me a skeptical look over and over as I tried my best to explain things to her. I really could have done without his audience.

Aneste couldn't use any magic yet, even after three months, but she was trying, and it looked like something was developing inside her whether that was magic or something else.

"I can feel something… I just don't know what it is." she admitted.

 I gave a pondering look.

"That's probably mana welling through you."

"So does that mean I have mana?"

"I think everyone has mana, just some are better at making it than others."

"So does that mean I'm just bad at it?"

"I don't know what it means, honestly. For me, it comes pretty naturally. I can feel the mana flowing through me just fine and I know it's mana. It just kind of came easy to me, and I don't know how to describe how to develop it."

Aneste let out a sigh. Rudy folded his arms and clicked his tongue.

"You really know how to put a girl down, Leah." he remarked.

I sent a water ball at him and the little shit dodged it.

 "Damn you Rudy!"

Rudy gave off a victorious smirk and then snapped into an epiphanic stance. He gave me a look, then shook his head. He placed a hand on his chin, then walked off. I followed after him.

 "What's up Rudy?"

"I don't know. It's an idea, but I want to try asking master about it anyway."

 "What kind of idea?"

 "About the drought."

I shrugged my shoulders and went back to teaching Aneste magic. After two minutes, Rudy came back out with an awkward, almost scared look.

 I called out to him.

"Did you ask her about your idea?!"

"No. She went out to the forest is what Lilia said."

 "Well then go after her!"

Rudy looked out beyond the fence and shook his head.

"No. I can't do it. Leah? Could you do it for me? Could you find master and bring her back here?"

"What was your idea? I can tell her then."

"I want to be the one to tell her, that way if it turns out to be dumb, she'll yell at me instead of you."

I let out a sigh. It was sweet he didn't want to get me into trouble, but this whole being too afraid to go out business was dumb. Even Aneste started to give me a confused look. I can't remember at what point he started going beyond the yard in the original story, but I really hope it's soon.

"Are you sure you don't want to at least try to go outside the yard?"

Rudy looked beyond the fence again, and the longer he looked past it, the more nervous he looked. He gave me a pleading look. Damn it. Rudy has amazing puppy dog eyes. Just thinking about rejecting him is putting me in a bad mood.

"Fine. Me and Aneste will track down Roxy for you."

 Rudy nodded.

"Thanks sis. You really are the best."

I gave him a dismissive wave and took off walking. Aneste followed behind. The air was dry. It really was drough conditions. Every field we walked by looked horrible, the villagers looked so disheartened and there was a general sense of doom looming around.

"Your parents are farmers, right Aneste?"

 Aneste nodded.

 "Yeah."

"Have they been talking about the drought at all?"

"Yeah, but they told me it will be alright.''

"Just like grown-ups to underplay things."

"Huh? So you think it's actually worse than what they're saying then?"

"Of course it's bad. Can't you see all the fields around us? Everything is dying."

"Oh. I didn't… so it really is bad then."

I looked behind and Aneste's face looked pale. It looked like I may have scared her. I don't know if she just isn't very smart. Oh right. I'm only four, and she's only five. She wouldn't know how to pay attention to things like this. I gave her a hesitant smile.

 "I wouldn't worry about it."

"But what if we run out of food Leah?"

"Rudy has an idea, and when Rudy has an idea, it almost always works."

"Really? Rudy is really smart. He's smarter than you."

"No he– I mean— he is smart! But I wouldn't say he's smarter than– oh whatever!"

Aneste let out a giggle. I shut up after that. After a while of walking we made it to the forest and found Roxy coming out with a bag full of herbs. She noticed us, smiled and then gave a skeptical smile.

"Um, hi? What are you all doing out here this far?"

 "Rudy." I replied.

 "Rudy was looking for me?"

"He said he had an idea about the drought."

"Ah… you know, I keep forgetting that this is a drought honestly. What idea did Rudy have?"

"He wouldn't tell us. He said he'd rather tell you himself."

"Oh fine. Let's go back I guess."

We then followed Roxy back home while she scolded us for going out near the forest and how dangerous it was. Soon we were back at the house where Rudy was waiting patiently. Instead of focusing on asking his question, his eyes immediately fixated on Roxy's bag and the herbs hanging out of it.

"What kind of herbs are those master? Did you find those in the forest?"

 Roxy was taken aback.

"Uh… yeah. Um… these herbs… um… oh. That's right. I heard these herbs were good for digestion so I wanted to try them out."

 Rudy gave her a look.

"How were you planning on doing that?"

Roxy looked a little dumbfounded at that question.

"You know… I'm not actually sure. I figured that something would come up, but now I see that maybe I should have had a plan. Oh well. I can always use these as plant starters."

 I gave Rudy a look.

"Hey! Didn't you have an idea you wanted to run by Roxy?"

"In a minute! I wanna learn about these herbs a minute! How'd you hear about these herbs?"

"A villager told me about them. I think I also read about them in a book somewhere–"

 "You mean there's botanical books?!"

"Uh… yeah? Did you not know that?"

I cleared my throat, but Rudy ignored me.

"Really? Do you think I know everything all of a sudden." he exclaimed.

 Roxy shrank back.

"Oh right. I keep forgetting you're just a child."

"Is the book you read pretty good?"

"Um… actually, I find those kinds of books a little boring."

"Not me! I'd love to read something like that!"

 "Is that so?"

I cleared my throat loud enough so that they all looked at me. Rudy groaned.

 "Fine! I'll ask her!"

He started to trace the ground with his foot and then made weak eye contact with Roxy.

"I had an idea… about the drought. I don't know if it's even a good idea, but I was thinking that maybe we can use our spells to help water the fields."

Roxy folded her arms and shook her head.

"You and Leah need to save your mana. There's so many fields that need watered, that even your advanced water spells won't be enough to fix this drought."

It was the response we expected. Roxy looked at us with a confused expression and unfolded her arms.

"Why do you two look so down? I can still do something."

I looked up at her, a little hopeful, but still disappointed.

"Didn't you say that we'd be wasting our mana?"

 Roxy nodded.

"Yeah, because the spells you know won't be enough, but I have a spell that will be. It's the water saint tier spell cumulonimbus. I'll show you if you want to follow me out into the middle of town."

Cumulonimbus? Oh yeah! I remember that spell! That was the one Roxy had Rudy perform as his final test! Wait! Are we at graduation already?! But I thought we had a little bit longer! Rudy reeled at the words follow me out into town. I took one look at Rudy and shook my head.

"Stay behind Rudy. We'll go watch Roxy by ourselves."

Rudy looked at us almost like he was going to change his mind.

"You said it's a water saint tier spell?"

 Roxy nodded.

"It sure is! Do you want to come see it yourself?"

Rudy stood there in silence for a long time.

"I really want to see it," he said. "But maybe some other time."

Roxy looked disappointed, but then shrugged her shoulders.

"Well it can't be helped then. Come on girls."

 We left Rudy behind at home and followed Roxy out into town. She looked around and walked around here and there, almost in circles, until she found a rather clear area and let out;

 "Aha! Here will do fine!."

She then swirled her staff around and began to chant the words.

"Oh spirits of the magnificent waters, I beseech the Prince of Thunder! Grant me my wish, bless me with thy savagery, and reveal to this insignificant servant a glimpse of thy power! Let fear strike the hearts of man as thy divine hammer strikes its anvil and cover the land with water! Comeoh rain, and wash everything away in thy flood of destruction–Cumulonimbus!"

A storm formed overhead, and soon after, a downpour of rain began. Aneste held onto for dear life both scared and amazed and what just happened. As for me, I could only bask in the sheer wonder at what I just saw happened. Nothing in this life or my last could compare to this moment, and nothing could describe the feelings that formed inside me. It was a moment I would never forget and a reminder of how amazing a world of magic really was.

When the rain finally dispersed, Roxy panted and gave a smile. She looked horridly winded, of course, that was probably because it took a lot of mana to conjure.

"There." she said. "That should help out the crops a little bit."

She stretched out a bit a let out a chuckle as she looked at our dumbstruck faces.

"See how amazing magic is? Once you and Rudy can cast this spell, that will be it. I'll have nothing left to teach you two. Don't worry. It's still a bit before you two get to that level."
