Chapter 104 – The Thing That Woke Inside Kai

Kai stared at the black symbol on his chest.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

The ancient city was completely silent.

Evetyl was still unconscious in his arms.

Cr-Hook stood nearby, staring at Kai.

The original Cr-Hook looked even more worried.

Then—

the black symbol moved.

It slowly spread across Kai's chest like ink flowing through water.

Kai grabbed it.

"Something's wrong."

Cr-Hook immediately stepped forward.

"Put her down."

Kai looked at him.

"What?"

"Put Evetyl down."

Kai carefully lowered Evetyl onto the ancient stone floor.

Cr-Hook knelt beside her.

"She is breathing."

Kai sighed in relief.

Then a voice came from inside him.

"You shouldn't have woken me."

Kai froze.

He looked around.

"Who said that?"

Cr-Hook raised his weapon.

"I heard it too."

The original Cr-Hook shook his head.

"No."

Cr-Hook looked at him.

"What?"

"It wasn't outside."

He pointed at Kai.

"It came from inside him."

Kai's face went pale.

"What does that mean?"

The original Cr-Hook stepped closer.

"It means the key wasn't empty."

Kai stared at him.

"Then what's inside me?"

The original Cr-Hook didn't answer.

The black symbol suddenly formed a second shape.

A small eye.

Kai stumbled backward.

"Get it off me!"

Cr-Hook grabbed his shoulder.

"Stay calm."

"I can't!"

The eye on Kai's chest opened.

A black line appeared across it.

Then another voice spoke.

"Cr-Hook."

Cr-Hook froze.

He knew that voice.

His own.

But older.

More tired.

"Who are you?"

The voice laughed softly.

"You really don't remember me?"

Cr-Hook's expression changed.

The original Cr-Hook stepped backward.

"No…"

Kai looked at him.

"You know this voice?"

The original Cr-Hook nodded.

"That voice belongs to the First Lock."

Cr-Hook frowned.

"I am the First Lock."

"No."

The original Cr-Hook stared at him.

"You are the second."

Cr-Hook's eyes widened.

"The second?"

The voice inside Kai laughed again.

"Finally."

Cr-Hook stepped toward Kai.

"Get out of him."

The voice answered:

"I can't."

"Why?"

"Because he is the only place I can exist."

Kai looked terrified.

"Who are you?"

Silence.

Then the voice whispered:

"Your first memory."

Kai froze.

"My first memory?"

The black symbol spread farther.

Images began appearing around him.

A ruined city.

A white sky.

People running.

A young boy.

Kai.

But he was much younger.

And standing beside him was someone else.

A girl.

Evetyl.

But not Evetyl.

Aeterna.

She was holding his hand.

Kai watched the memory.

"Aeterna…"

Evetyl suddenly moved.

Her eyes opened.

"Kai?"

Kai turned.

"Evetyl!"

She slowly sat up.

"What happened?"

Kai pointed at his chest.

"This."

Evetyl looked at the black symbol.

Her expression immediately changed.

"No."

Cr-Hook looked at her.

"You recognize it."

Evetyl stared at Kai.

"I've seen it before."

"When?"

She struggled to remember.

"Before the first world ended."

The original Cr-Hook looked at her.

"What did it do?"

Evetyl closed her eyes.

"It was inside Kai."

Kai's breathing stopped.

"What?"

Evetyl looked at him.

"You weren't alone."

Kai shook his head.

"I don't understand."

Evetyl touched his shoulder.

"There was something inside you."

"What?"

"I don't know."

The black symbol suddenly pulsed.

A voice whispered:

"You knew."

Evetyl froze.

The voice continued.

"You always knew."

Evetyl's eyes filled with fear.

"No…"

Cr-Hook stepped beside her.

"What is it?"

Evetyl shook her head.

"I don't remember."

The voice laughed.

"You erased it."

Cr-Hook looked at Evetyl.

"You erased something from Kai?"

"I…"

Evetyl couldn't answer.

The original Cr-Hook suddenly walked toward her.

"You erased the First Memory."

Evetyl looked at him.

"What is the First Memory?"

He answered quietly.

"The memory of what Kai was before he became Kai."

Kai stared at him.

"Then tell me."

The original Cr-Hook looked directly into his eyes.

"You weren't born."

Kai went silent.

"You weren't created."

His voice became quieter.

"You appeared."

Kai frowned.

"Where?"

The original Cr-Hook pointed toward the First Door.

"Before the first world."

Kai's hands began shaking.

"Why?"

"We don't know."

"Then how did Evetyl find me?"

The original Cr-Hook looked at Evetyl.

"She didn't find you."

Evetyl looked up.

"What?"

"She found the ending of something."

Kai's face went pale.

"What ended?"

The original Cr-Hook didn't answer.

Instead, the ancient city began shaking.

A low rumble passed through the streets.

The First Door appeared again.

But this time it wasn't closed.

It was gone.

There was only a huge empty space where it had stood.

Cr-Hook looked around.

"Where did the door go?"

The original Cr-Hook stared at the empty space.

"It wasn't destroyed."

"Then?"

"It moved."

Evetyl stood.

"Where?"

The original Cr-Hook slowly turned toward Kai.

Kai's black symbol pulsed again.

The answer became obvious.

Cr-Hook stared at Kai.

"The door is inside him."

Kai stepped backward.

"No."

The black eye on his chest opened wider.

A tiny image appeared inside it.

A door.

A very old door.

And behind it—

someone was standing.

Kai whispered:

"There's someone there."

Evetyl stepped closer.

"Who?"

Kai looked terrified.

"I don't know."

Cr-Hook raised his weapon.

"Can you see their face?"

Kai stared into the black eye.

The figure slowly walked closer.

One step.

Then another.

Then another.

Kai's breathing became faster.

"It's a woman."

Evetyl froze.

"What does she look like?"

Kai's eyes widened.

"She looks…"

He couldn't finish.

Evetyl grabbed his shoulders.

"Kai!"

Kai looked at her.

"She looks like you."

Silence.

Evetyl slowly released him.

"No."

The figure inside the black symbol moved closer.

Now its face was visible.

It was Evetyl.

But older.

Her hair was longer.

Her eyes were completely black.

And she was wearing the same white clothing from the ancient memories.

Aeterna.

She placed her hand against the other side of the invisible door.

Then she smiled.

Evetyl stepped backward.

"That isn't me."

The older woman smiled wider.

"It is."

Cr-Hook moved in front of Evetyl.

"Stay away from her."

Aeterna looked at him through Kai's chest.

"You still protect her."

Cr-Hook froze.

The same words.

Again.

The woman continued.

"You never learned."

Cr-Hook's expression hardened.

"Learned what?"

"That protecting Evetyl…"

She smiled.

"…means protecting the person who destroyed your world."

Cr-Hook's eyes widened.

Evetyl shook her head.

"No."

Aeterna looked directly at her.

"You remember now."

Evetyl's breathing became unsteady.

Fragments flooded her mind.

A burning city.

Cr-Hook kneeling.

Lyra crying.

Elara screaming.

Kai reaching for her.

And Evetyl standing before the First Door.

She remembered.

But only one sentence was clear.

"If Kai survives, the world dies."

Evetyl collapsed to her knees.

Kai rushed toward her.

"Evetyl!"

She pushed him away.

"Don't!"

Kai froze.

"Why?"

Evetyl looked at him with tears in her eyes.

"Because I remember what I did."

Cr-Hook stared at her.

"What did you do?"

Evetyl looked toward the black symbol.

"I chose Kai."

The ancient city went silent.

She whispered:

"I knew saving him would destroy the first world."

Kai shook his head.

"No."

"I knew."

"No!"

"I knew!"

Evetyl began crying.

"And I still chose you."

Kai stood completely still.

The black symbol suddenly stopped glowing.

Then the voice inside it whispered:

"Because you loved him."

Evetyl looked up.

The voice continued.

"And that was the first mistake."

The black eye closed.

Kai collapsed.

Cr-Hook caught him.

"Kai!"

The original Cr-Hook looked toward Evetyl.

"The First Memory is awake."

Evetyl looked at him.

"What happens now?"

He stared at the empty space where the First Door had once stood.

"Now…"

He slowly raised his head.

"…the world remembers."

Far above Crosshaven—

every clock stopped.

Every window went dark.

And for the first time since the First World ended—

the sky began turning white.

To be continued…
