Chapter 80 - Chapter 80 – The One Who Was Chosen

Chapter 80 – The One Who Was Chosen

The enormous shape descended slowly through the cracked sky.

Evetyl stood beneath the Memory Tree, unable to understand what she was seeing.

The child beside her had stopped breathing.

Even the thousands of forgotten memories had become silent.

One by one, they lowered themselves to the ground.

Not because they were afraid.

Because they were waiting.

The giant figure finally came through the crack.

It was unlike the Eaters.

Unlike the King of Oblivion.

Unlike anything Evetyl had ever seen.

It had a human shape, but its body was made from thousands of glowing memories. Faces appeared across its arms and shoulders before fading away. Entire landscapes flickered across its chest.

It looked like a person made from history itself.

And then...

It slowly lowered itself onto one knee.

The child whispered,

"The First Keeper."

Evetyl stared.

"I thought the Eaters were the First Keepers."

"They were."

The child looked at the kneeling figure.

"But this one was their leader."

The First Keeper raised its head.

Its face was old, but strangely peaceful.

"Evetyl Clarke."

Evetyl stepped forward.

"Why are you kneeling?"

The First Keeper smiled.

"Because the promise has returned."

Evetyl frowned.

"What promise?"

"The First Promise."

The child looked at Evetyl.

"The one you made."

Evetyl shook her head.

"I don't remember making it."

"You weren't supposed to."

The First Keeper slowly stood.

"Your memories were sealed for a reason."

"Everyone keeps saying that."

Evetyl crossed her arms.

"But nobody tells me the reason."

The First Keeper looked toward the Memory Tree.

"Because if you remembered too soon..."

"...you would have tried to fix everything."

Evetyl's expression softened.

"Is that bad?"

"For you?"

The First Keeper looked sad.

"Yes."

Outside the Memory Field, Crosshaven was becoming unstable.

The black crack above the city had stopped expanding, but the sky still flickered between different versions of reality.

For one moment, there was a blue sky.

Then a red one.

Then an endless ocean.

Then complete darkness.

Kai stood in the middle of the plaza.

"We can't keep this up."

The Curator looked at him.

"We need Evetyl."

"I know."

"But she isn't ready."

Kai looked toward the white doorway.

"Then we'll wait."

The Curator sighed.

"You don't understand."

Kai turned.

"I understand enough."

"No."

The Curator's voice became serious.

"If Evetyl becomes the First Memory..."

"...she may never return."

Kai went silent.

The words hurt.

But he didn't move.

"Then we bring her back before that happens."

The Curator looked at him.

"You can't promise that."

Kai gave a small smile.

"I can promise I'll try."

The First Thing, standing nearby, quietly said,

"That's exactly how she talks."

Kai looked at it.

"Who?"

"Evetyl."

A pause.

"She never promises something because she knows she can succeed."

The First Thing looked toward the doorway.

"She promises because someone needs hope."

A sudden sound interrupted them.

Clink.

Everyone turned.

The Warden's chains had fallen to the ground.

The Warden stood motionless.

Its eyes were empty.

Kai immediately ran toward it.

"Warden?"

No response.

The Eye flew closer.

"What happened?"

The Warden slowly looked down at the yellow flower attached to its chain.

Its voice was quiet.

"I..."

It paused.

"I don't remember who gave me this."

Kai's heart sank.

"No."

The First Thought immediately raised its hand.

"Everyone stay away!"

"What?"

"The Eaters have breached the outer barrier."

Darkness appeared along the edge of Crosshaven.

The Eaters were coming.

The traveler from the future stepped forward.

"Everyone remember something important."

Cr-Hook stared at him.

"Now?"

"Yes."

"What?"

The traveler looked around.

"Anything."

"Your name."

"Your friends."

"Your home."

"Your promises."

"Anything that matters."

The Eye understood.

"They cannot consume a memory while it is being actively remembered."

The traveler nodded.

"Exactly."

Cr-Hook immediately pointed at himself.

"I'm Cr-Hook."

The First Anomaly looked at him.

"We know."

"I like food."

"We know that too."

"I hate being ignored."

"We definitely know that."

Cr-Hook nodded.

"Good. I'm safe."

Even Kai laughed.

For a few seconds...

The fear disappeared.

Inside the Memory Field...

Evetyl looked at the First Keeper.

"What happens now?"

"You choose."

"Choose what?"

"Whether you wish to remember."

Evetyl looked at the Memory Tree.

Every leaf was glowing.

"Can I remember everything?"

The First Keeper nodded.

"Yes."

"And if I do?"

"You will understand the beginning."

"And the ending?"

The First Keeper became silent.

Evetyl noticed.

"You don't know?"

"I do."

"Then tell me."

The First Keeper looked directly into her eyes.

"The ending hasn't happened yet."

Evetyl froze.

"What?"

"The future you fear..."

"It isn't fixed."

The First Keeper pointed toward the tree.

"Every memory is a record of something that happened."

"But some memories..."

"...are records of possibilities."

Evetyl slowly understood.

"The visions I've seen..."

"Some are possible futures."

"Yes."

"The woman..."

"Possible."

"Kai dying..."

"Possible."

"The worlds ending..."

"Possible."

Evetyl stared at the glowing leaves.

"So none of it is guaranteed."

The First Keeper smiled.

"Correct."

For the first time in a long while...

Evetyl felt hope.

The child suddenly looked worried.

"But there is one problem."

Evetyl turned.

"What?"

"The First Promise."

"What about it?"

"It wasn't only a promise."

The child's voice became quiet.

"It was a rule."

Evetyl frowned.

"A rule?"

The First Keeper answered.

"When the first worlds were created, something was needed to connect them."

"The worlds couldn't exist independently."

"They needed a constant."

"A memory that would survive every ending."

Evetyl slowly looked at herself.

"No."

The First Keeper nodded.

"You."

Evetyl stepped backward.

"That's impossible."

"You have already crossed worlds."

"You have survived things that should have erased you."

"You remember people even after their worlds disappear."

"And the most important part..."

The First Keeper pointed toward her heart.

"You can enter places that have no history."

Evetyl's breathing became shallow.

"Because I'm..."

"The First Memory."

The child smiled sadly.

"You always were."

Evetyl looked toward the doorway.

Kai was there.

She could feel him.

She could almost hear his voice.

And suddenly she understood something else.

If she was the First Memory...

Then perhaps Kai wasn't traveling with her by accident.

She looked at the First Keeper.

"What about Kai?"

The First Keeper's expression changed.

For the first time...

It looked genuinely worried.

"Kai is different."

"How?"

"He isn't part of the First Promise."

"Then why can he enter the Memory Field?"

The First Keeper hesitated.

"Because..."

"...someone made him capable of remembering you."

Evetyl's heart skipped.

"Who?"

The First Keeper looked toward the ceiling.

Toward the place where the red crack had appeared.

"The woman from the future."

Evetyl stared.

"She changed Kai?"

"No."

"Then what?"

"She gave him something."

"What?"

The First Keeper looked at the child.

The child quietly answered.

"A memory."

Evetyl felt a chill.

"Which memory?"

The First Keeper's voice became almost a whisper.

"The memory of you."

Outside...

Kai suddenly collapsed.

"Evetyl!"

The traveler caught him before he hit the ground.

Kai grabbed his chest.

Something was burning inside his mind.

Images flashed before his eyes.

Evetyl.

A ruined city.

The Memory Tree.

The mysterious woman.

And a promise.

A promise he had never heard before.

He saw himself standing beside Evetyl.

Older.

Wounded.

Holding her hand.

He heard his own voice.

"If you forget me..."

"I'll find you again."

The vision vanished.

Kai opened his eyes.

The traveler stared at him.

"You remembered."

Kai slowly sat up.

"What was that?"

The traveler didn't answer.

Kai looked at him.

"Tell me."

The traveler lowered his eyes.

"It was your first memory."

"My first memory?"

"No."

He looked toward the white doorway.

"Your first memory of Evetyl."

Kai froze.

"But..."

"I've known her for years."

The traveler shook his head.

"No."

"You've known her..."

"...for much longer than that."

Inside the Memory Field...

Evetyl suddenly heard Kai's voice.

Not from the doorway.

From inside her own mind.

"If you forget me..."

"I'll find you again."

She covered her mouth.

Tears filled her eyes.

The child looked at her.

"What happened?"

Evetyl whispered,

"I remember."

"What?"

She looked toward the doorway.

"I remember Kai."

The First Keeper's expression became serious.

"Then the final seal has opened."

Evetyl frowned.

"What final seal?"

The First Keeper didn't answer.

Instead...

The great Memory Tree split down the center.

A massive door appeared inside its trunk.

Behind that door was complete darkness.

And carved across it were three words:

THE FIRST WORLD

Evetyl stared at the door.

The child slowly stepped backward.

The First Keeper bowed its head.

"That is where your first memory was born."

Evetyl took one step forward.

"Then that's where I'm going."

The First Keeper looked up.

"If you enter..."

"...you may finally remember everything."

Evetyl reached for the door.

"I've spent too long afraid of what I'll find."

Her hand touched the ancient surface.

"I think I'm ready."

The door opened.

And from the darkness beyond it...

A familiar voice whispered:

"Welcome back, Evetyl."

Evetyl froze.

Because she knew that voice.

It was hers.

But older.

Much older.
