Chapter 4 - Chapter 3 - The beast in the rain

The cracked stone at the mouth of the old well trembled once more, then fell still.

To anyone passing by, the moment would have looked like nothing a loose piece of aged masonry shifting under rain and time. But both Li Xian and Chen Mo knew better. The air had changed too abruptly, carrying with it the unmistakable scent of something that had crossed from dormancy into awareness.

Chen Mo was the first to move.

He crossed the space between them in three quick strides, caught Li Xian lightly but firmly by the wrist, and pulled her back from the fence just as a thin black shape shot up from the darkness of the well.

It was so fast the eye could barely follow it.

A blur.

A hiss.

A pair of narrow gold eyes burning through the rain.

The creature landed soundlessly atop the rusted fence, its body low and taut like a drawn bow. At first glance it resembled a cat, though no mortal animal had ever carried itself with that kind of malice. It was lean and dark, its fur almost swallowing the light around it. Two sharp ears flicked back against its skull. A thin tail swayed behind it, its tip split like a forked flame.

A shadow beast.

No more than low-rank by cultivation standards, but still far beyond anything a normal human could handle.

Li Xian's expression cooled into interest.

"What an ugly little thing."

Chen Mo gave her a sharp look, as though unsure whether she was joking or dangerously unconcerned.

"Get behind me."

That almost made her laugh.

A former sovereign being told to hide from a half-awakened shadow creature by a young hidden cultivator on a modern university campus. If the Nine Sects could see her now, they would probably die a second time from the absurdity alone.

The beast's pupils narrowed.

It was not truly looking at Chen Mo.

It was staring at Li Xian.

No...at the warmth hidden within her.

At the bloodline it could sense but not understand.

Its back arched slowly, and when it opened its mouth, the sound that emerged was not a cat's hiss at all, but something eerier a breathy rasp, almost like laughter dragged over broken glass.

Chen Mo lowered his center of gravity. "It shouldn't be awake during the day."

"Then something disturbed it," Li Xian replied.

His gaze flicked toward her for half a second. "Yes. You."

She considered denying it, then decided honesty was more entertaining.

"Probably."

The beast moved.

It launched itself straight toward Li Xian, a streak of black through the rain.

Chen Mo's hand flashed into his coat and emerged holding a narrow strip of yellow paper. He snapped his wrist, and the talisman ignited midair, a line of pale blue light slicing between them and the beast. The creature twisted in mid-leap with unnatural agility, avoiding a direct hit, but the edge of the technique still grazed its flank.

It hit the ground snarling.

Smoke curled from singed fur.

The thing's gold eyes turned vicious.

So. Chen Mo was not merely aware. He was trained.

Li Xian filed the information away and stepped slightly to the side, testing her body's balance. Weak, yes. But not unusable. The original owner of this body had never cultivated, yet the meridians were not ruined only dormant. Thin channels. Poor foundation. Still, enough for instinct to move through if she forced it.

The shadow beast circled them in silence.

Chen Mo did not take his eyes off it. "Can you run?"

Li Xian glanced at him. "You ask too many questions with obvious answers."

"This is not the time to be difficult."

"This is exactly the time."

The beast darted in again, this time low and fast, aiming not for Li Xian's throat but for her side. Clever enough to test weakness first.

Chen Mo cursed softly and moved to intercept.

Too slow.

Not by much, but enough.

Li Xian exhaled and stepped forward.

Her movement was not powered by qi, because she did not have enough to spare. It was powered by memory. By countless years of battle embedded so deeply into soul and bone that even rebirth had not erased them. She pivoted at the last possible instant, her hand snapping out in a precise line.

Two fingers struck the beast just beneath the jaw.

The creature shrieked.

The force behind the blow was not enough to kill it, but accuracy did what strength could not. Its body twisted sideways and slammed into the fence, claws scraping uselessly at wet metal before it dropped back into the mud.

Chen Mo stared.

The beast stared.

Li Xian calmly withdrew her hand. "See? Ugly."

That bought exactly one second of stillness before the shadow beast's ears flattened and rage overtook caution. A dark mist began gathering around its paws, spreading thinly over the wet ground.

Yin-fed. Shadow-aspected. Probably half-starved if it had been sleeping under a university well and surviving on scattered ambient energy.

It was dangerous because it was desperate.

And desperate beasts did not think clearly.

It lunged again.

This time Li Xian didn't strike.

She looked straight into its eyes.

There were moments when power had little to do with current strength and everything to do with what one had once been. Bloodlines remembered. Beasts remembered. Flame remembered.

For the briefest instant, the sovereign in her surfaced.

No pressure rolled out. No visible aura exploded around her. Yet something ancient flashed through her gaze something no low-rank spirit beast could endure.

The shadow beast stopped in midair.

Its body convulsed once.

Then it landed abruptly and dropped into a crouch, tail tucked lower, ears flattened not in aggression but in instinctive submission.

Chen Mo went very still.

He turned slowly toward Li Xian. "What did you just do?"

Li Xian watched the beast, which now trembled visibly despite trying to bare its teeth.

"Reminded it of its place."

The creature hissed again, though the sound had lost all confidence. It began backing toward the old fence, keeping its eyes on Li Xian the entire time.

Then something below the well pulsed.

Stronger.

Warmer.

The beast flinched.

Li Xian felt it too the deeper presence under the campus, the phoenix resonance, stirring beneath layers of seal and time. The shadow beast had not awakened because of her alone. It had awakened because whatever was sealed below was becoming unstable.

That made this encounter less random than she liked.

The black creature gave one last hateful glance, then bounded back over the fence and vanished into the old courtyard.

Chen Mo released the breath he had been holding.

For a moment neither of them spoke.

Rain tapped against stone. Water dripped from the edges of the roof behind them. Somewhere in the distance, students laughed, oblivious to the fact that a spirit beast had just tried to claw through the hidden layer of their peaceful university afternoon.

At last Chen Mo turned to her fully.

"That was not normal."

Li Xian arched a brow. "You'll have to be more specific."

He ignored the remark. "No ordinary person can freeze a shadow beast by looking at it."

"No ordinary person notices shadow beasts under abandoned wells."

"That's not an answer."

"It is enough of one."

Their eyes met.

Caution on his side. Cool amusement on hers.

Then Chen Mo looked toward the fenced courtyard again. "You should leave the old grounds alone."

Li Xian followed his gaze to the well.

It called to her now more clearly than before.

Not with words. With heat.

With bloodline.

With something buried and ancient trying very hard to wake up.

"No," she said softly. "I don't think I should."

That was when Chen Mo finally lost his patience.

"Do you have any idea what's under there?"

Li Xian turned back to him.

Rain clung to her dark hair and the edge of her lashes. In this body, in this world, she looked young enough to be mistaken for fragile. But her eyes were older than ruined heavens.

"Not yet," she said.

A faint smile touched her lips.

"But I intend to find out."
