The deeper they traveled into the forest, the quieter the world became.
The usual sounds of beginner players fighting monsters had long since faded behind them. Towering trees stretched endlessly in every direction, their thick branches intertwining overhead and blocking most of the sunlight. Only scattered beams of golden light managed to break through the dense canopy, illuminating patches of moss-covered ground.
The air felt different here.
Cooler.
Heavier.
The scent of damp earth and pine lingered around them while an unnatural silence settled over the woods.
Rio slowed her pace.
Her eyes carefully scanned the surrounding area while her hand remained firmly wrapped around the hilt of her curved saber.
Something felt off.
Beside her, Ryota casually looked around as if they were taking a relaxing afternoon walk.
"Ryota."
"Hm?"
Rio glanced toward him.
"Do you realize how far we've wandered from our usual grinding route?"
Ryota scratched the back of his head.
"Uh... yeah."
He looked around at the massive trees surrounding them.
"I kinda noticed that."
"Kinda?"
Rio sighed.
"We're several zones away from the beginner hunting areas."
Ryota looked genuinely surprised.
"Really?"
"Yes."
Rio rubbed her forehead.
"We haven't seen another player in nearly twenty minutes."
Ryota looked around again.
Now that she mentioned it, he realized she was right.
The forest had become strangely isolated.
No player chatter.
No combat sounds.
No signs of civilization.
Only trees.
An endless amount of trees.
"It's peaceful though," Ryota said.
Rio frowned.
"That's exactly what worries me."
Her eyes narrowed slightly.
"I have a bad feeling about this place."
A few seconds later, her gaze suddenly shifted toward the corner of her minimap.
A faint green marker flashed briefly before disappearing.
Rio immediately stopped walking.
"Wait."
Ryota blinked.
"What?"
Rio opened her map interface.
Her brows furrowed.
Then slowly lifted.
"...No way."
"What?"
Rio zoomed in.
A memory surfaced from fifteen years of experience.
A hidden location.
One that very few players had ever found during the early years of Evermount.
Her eyes widened.
"I remember this area."
Ryota leaned closer.
"You do?"
Rio nodded slowly.
"There's a dungeon somewhere around here."
"A dungeon?"
Rio's excitement immediately began replacing her caution.
"Yeah."
She closed her map.
"If my memory is right, it's a hidden dungeon."
"A hidden dungeon?"
"One that wasn't discovered until much later."
Ryota grinned.
"So you're saying we found free loot?"
Rio rolled her eyes.
"If we survive, yes."
Ryota's grin only widened.
"Now you're speaking my language."
Rio shook her head.
"That's not how that phrase works."
Together they continued moving through the woods.
Several minutes later, the trees began thinning.
Large stone formations emerged from the forest floor.
Ancient ruins partially buried beneath roots and moss became visible among the undergrowth.
Then they found it.
A massive stone archway stood embedded into the side of a rocky hill.
Ancient runes glowed faintly across its surface.
At its center sat a dark cave entrance.
The opening resembled the mouth of some sleeping beast waiting patiently for prey to wander inside.
Ryota stared.
"...Okay."
"That's definitely a dungeon."
Rio nodded.
"This wasn't here in my previous timeline."
Ryota blinked.
"What?"
Rio frowned.
"No."
She corrected herself.
"It was here."
"I just never found it."
That realization alone made her cautious.
If someone with fifteen years of knowledge had never discovered this place before...
Then this dungeon wasn't ordinary.
Ryota, meanwhile, looked excited.
"Think there's treasure inside?"
Rio gave him a look.
"Think there are monsters inside."
"Treasure monsters?"
Rio ignored him.
Drawing her saber, she approached the entrance.
"Stay alert."
Ryota immediately unsheathed his sword.
"I got it."
The moment they stepped through the archway, a cool breeze brushed against their skin.
The temperature dropped noticeably.
The cave descended underground through a winding stone corridor illuminated by faint green crystals embedded within the walls.
Dust drifted lazily through the air.
The silence inside felt unnaturally deep.
Almost oppressive.
The further they walked, the more uncomfortable Rio became.
Her instincts screamed that something was watching them.
Neither of them spoke for several minutes.
Then—
Scrape.
The sound echoed through the corridor.
Metal against stone.
Rio instantly froze.
Ryota stopped as well.
"...You heard that?"
"Yes."
Scrape.
The noise came again.
Somewhere deeper inside the dungeon.
The sound bounced across the walls, making it impossible to determine its exact location.
Rio slowly tightened her grip on her saber.
"Stay close."
Ryota immediately moved nearer.
"I don't want us getting separated."
"No arguments here."
The scraping continued intermittently as they advanced.
Eventually, the corridor widened.
A faint green glow appeared ahead.
Rio's eyes narrowed.
"There."
Ryota followed her gaze.
At the far end of the passage stood a large circular chamber.
A strange green light illuminated its interior.
Rio's instincts immediately went on high alert.
"That's probably the central chamber."
Ryota swallowed.
"Boss room?"
"Maybe."
"Trap room?"
"Also maybe."
Ryota frowned.
"Those aren't very comforting options."
Rio ignored him.
"Proceed carefully."
For once, Ryota nodded without making a joke.
Together they entered the chamber.
The room was massive.
Ancient carvings covered every wall.
Some depicted warriors battling monstrous creatures.
Others appeared to show strange rituals and magical ceremonies.
In the center stood a weathered stone pedestal.
Green runes glowed softly across its cracked surface.
Rio immediately felt uneasy.
Her eyes moved across the symbols.
"...Interesting."
Ryota looked toward the pedestal.
"What is it?"
Rio stepped closer.
"This isn't decoration."
She crouched beside one of the runes.
"It's some kind of magical construct."
"Meaning?"
"It means don't touch anything."
Ryota raised both hands.
"I wasn't planning to."
Rio pointed directly at him.
"I'm serious."
"I know."
"No touching."
"I know."
"No poking."
"I know."
"No pushing."
"I know."
"No accidental explosions."
Ryota paused.
"...That one feels targeted."
"It is."
Rio stood.
After everything that had happened so far, she trusted dungeon traps more than she trusted Ryota.
Carefully, she approached the pedestal.
Her interface scanned the runes.
The result appeared moments later.
Containment Spell Detected
Rio's expression immediately changed.
"...Containment?"
Ryota blinked.
"Containment for what?"
Before she could answer—
A loose stone shifted beneath Ryota's foot.
The rock rolled forward.
Slowly.
Silently.
Then tapped the side of the pedestal.
Click.
The entire chamber froze.
Rio closed her eyes.
"...Ryota."
"I didn't touch it."
"You absolutely touched it."
"It was indirect touching."
The runes exploded with green light.
A low hum echoed throughout the room.
The pedestal began vibrating.
Rio sighed.
"Of course."
The glow intensified.
Then a humanoid figure emerged from the center of the pedestal itself.
Its body appeared to be formed entirely from emerald light.
Two glowing eyes stared directly at them.
The chamber fell silent.
Then the figure spoke.
"Who enters my domain?"
Its voice echoed from every direction simultaneously.
Ryota immediately stepped behind Rio.
"I swear I didn't mean to."
Rio resisted the urge to stab him.
The figure tilted its head.
Its glowing eyes carefully studied both of them.
"Few intruders reach this far."
Its voice remained calm.
"Fewer still leave unchanged."
The words sent a chill down Rio's spine.
This wasn't a normal dungeon guardian.
Something about it felt ancient.
Intelligent.
Dangerous.
Ryota leaned closer.
"What do we do?"
Rio kept her eyes fixed on the figure.
"We proceed carefully."
"Okay."
"You stay beside me."
"Okay."
"And stop touching things."
"I'll try."
Rio immediately hated that answer.
The glowing figure slowly raised both arms.
Instantly every rune in the room ignited.
Green light surged across the walls.
The entire dungeon trembled.
Stone groaned.
The corridor behind them shifted.
Walls began moving.
Passages rearranged themselves.
The floor vibrated beneath their feet.
Rio stared.
"...This dungeon is alive."
Ryota looked around nervously.
"...That's probably bad."
"Very bad."
The figure's eyes glowed brighter.
And at that exact moment, Ryota accidentally kicked another loose stone.
The pebble bounced across the floor.
Clink.
It struck a glowing rune.
Immediately another section of the room shifted.
A distant trapdoor slammed shut somewhere in the dungeon.
Rio slowly turned toward him.
"...How?"
Ryota looked genuinely distressed.
"I don't know."
The glowing figure watched silently.
Then spoke.
"The dungeon reacts to you... strangely."
Rio covered her face.
"Of course it does."
The figure looked fascinated.
The walls shifted again.
Several runes flickered erratically.
A section of floor briefly rose before sinking back down.
Even the guardian seemed confused.
Ryota awkwardly scratched his cheek.
"I'm still following instructions."
"That isn't the problem."
Rio pointed at the room.
"The dungeon thinks your existence is an environmental hazard."
Despite everything, a faint smile tugged at her lips.
Hopeless.
Absolutely hopeless.
Yet somehow she suspected this chaos would eventually save their lives.
Because if there was one thing Ryota excelled at—
It was turning disasters into opportunities.
With a resigned sigh, Rio adjusted her grip on her saber.
"Alright."
She looked toward the glowing guardian.
Then toward the shifting corridors beyond.
"Let's see what kind of dungeon we've gotten ourselves trapped inside."
Ryota smiled sheepishly.
"Together?"
Rio rolled her eyes.
"Unfortunately."
And with that, the two stepped deeper into the living dungeon, following the ancient guardian while the walls continued shifting around them.
Ahead lay hidden chambers, forgotten secrets, dangerous trials, and undoubtedly several more catastrophes caused by Ryota's unbelievable luck.
The adventure had only just begun.
