Chapter 16 - Chapter 16 – The Weight of a Blade

The air felt colder the deeper they moved.

Not because of the weather but because of where they were.

Kael walked slightly ahead of Lucien this time, his pace steady, his mind already mapping the unfamiliar terrain. The forest here was different from the one near his village. The trees were taller, older. Their roots twisted above the ground like veins, creating uneven footing and natural traps.

This wasn't a place people passed through.

This was a place people avoided.

Behind them, Riven yawned.

"…Remind me again why we're here?"

Elias didn't slow down.

"Because someone paid for something," he said.

Lucien frowned slightly.

"…That's it?"

Riven smirked.

"That's always it."

Kael spoke quietly.

"A job without context is inefficient."

Elias glanced back at him.

"Then consider this a lesson."

They reached a ridge overlooking a narrow clearing.

Below, a small structure stood half wood, half stone. It looked like an old outpost or a forgotten watch station. Smoke rose faintly from a chimney.

Occupied.

Elias crouched, observing.

"Our target is inside," he said.

Lucien crossed his arms.

"…And what exactly did this guy do?"

Elias answered without hesitation.

"He has something that doesn't belong to him."

Kael's eyes narrowed slightly.

"That's vague."

Elias smirked faintly.

"It's enough."

Nyx appeared beside them, her presence slipping in like a shadow.

"One person," she said quietly. "No signs of others."

Riven stretched.

"Good. Quick job."

Lucien looked between them.

"…We're just going to walk in and fight him?"

Elias stood.

"No."

Then he looked at Kael.

"You go in first."

Kael didn't hesitate.

"Understood."

Lucien blinked.

"…Wait, what?"

Elias glanced at him.

"You're with him."

Lucien sighed.

"Of course I am."

Inside the Outpost

The door creaked slightly as Kael pushed it open.

He didn't rush in.

He stepped slowly, his eyes scanning everything.

One room.

Simple layout.

Table,Chair , and Fire burning low.

And a man.

Sitting calmly.

He didn't reach for a weapon.

Didn't react with panic.

He just looked up.

"…So it finally caught up to me," he said.

Lucien stepped in behind Kael, already forming his Aether sword.

"…You knew we were coming?"

The man smiled faintly.

"I was hoping you wouldn't."

Kael studied him.

No immediate aggression.

No Aether flare.

But he was not weak, and is Controlled.

"State your intent," Kael said calmly.

The man leaned back slightly.

"My intent?" he repeated.

Then he chuckled softly.

"I suppose that depends on yours."

Lucien frowned.

"…We're here for whatever you took."

The man's eyes shifted slightly.

Then he nodded.

"I see."

He stood slowly.

"No point pretending then."

Aether gathered around him.

Wind.

Sharp.

Controlled.

Kael's fragments formed instantly.

Lucien's blade stabilized.

The room shifted.

The Clash Begins

The man moved first.

A burst of wind exploded outward, forcing both Kael and Lucien to step back.

Fast.

Cleaner than most.

Lucien reacted immediately, lunging forward with his blade.

The man sidestepped, wind wrapping around his arm as he deflected the strike.

Not brute force.

Precision.

Kael's fragments shot forward from multiple angles.

The man twisted, wind slicing through the air, knocking several off course but not all.

One cut across his shoulder.

He winced.

But didn't slow down.

Experienced, Kael noted.

"Leave," the man said suddenly.

Lucien didn't stop.

"…Not happening."

Their blades clashed against each other Aether against Aether.

Lucien pressed harder this time, his movements sharper than before.

Training showing.

But the man adapted.

"You're still new," the man said, blocking another strike. "Your control is decent but your intent is unclear."

Lucien gritted his teeth.

"I don't need advice."

"You do." the man replied calmly.

Kael circled slightly, fragments adjusting.

He's not trying to kill ,he's holding back.

That realization came quickly.

The man created distance with a gust of wind, pushing them both back.

"I don't want to fight you!" he said.

Lucien froze for a fraction of a second.

"…Then don't."

"Walk away," the man said. "Take your lives and go."

Riven's voice came faintly from outside.

"Don't get sentimental, kids."

Lucien's grip tightened.

"…We really don't get that choice."

The man studied him.

Then nodded slowly.

"I figured."

This time, the man attacked properly.

Wind surged around him, sharper, faster.

Lucien barely blocked, his blade vibrating under the force.

Kael's fragments moved in tighter patterns, faster than before—less hesitation now.

The fight escalated.

But something remained off.

The man wasn't aiming for lethal strikes.

He was aiming for Disabling.

Deflecting, and trying to Escape

Kael saw it clearly.

"He's trying to disengage," Kael said.

Lucien moved to intercept.

"No you don't!"

Their attacks forced the man back toward the wall.

He exhaled sharply.

"…You're making this harder than it needs to be."

For a brief moment, the man's guard dropped slightly.

Not physically.

Mentally.

Kael saw it.

Lucien felt it.

"…Why?" Lucien asked suddenly.

The man didn't answer immediately.

Then said

"…Because I don't want to kill children."

Silence.

Lucien's eyes flickered.

Kael didn't react outwardly.

But his mind sharpened further.

The man continued:

"I took what I needed. I stayed out of everyone's way,and now…" he looked at them both, "..this"

Lucien's sword wavered slightly.

"…What did you take?"

The man's expression hardened.

"…Something to keep someone alive."

That was the moment.

The hesitation.

The Turning Point

Lucien's grip loosened—just slightly.

And the man moved.

A sudden burst of wind—stronger than before.

It slammed into Lucien, throwing him back.

Kael reacted instantly, fragments intercepting the follow-up attack.

The man was already moving toward the exit.

Fast and is Trying to escape.

Elias's voice came from outside.

"Lucien."

Cold.

Sharp.

A command.

Lucien stood.

Breathing hard.

His eyes locked onto the man.

If he escapes…

We fail the mission

And next time… it might be worse.

Lucien moved.

The Final Exchange

The man reached the doorway—

Lucien was faster.

His Aether surged, more controlled than before, his blade forming clean and sharp.

He closed the distance in an instant.

The man turned—wind gathering—

Too late.

Their eyes met for a brief second.

And in that moment—

There was no hatred.

No rage.

Just understanding.

Lucien spoke under his breath.

"...I'm sorry."

Then

He struck.

The blade cut clean.

The man's Aether collapsed instantly.

Silence filled the room.

Aftermath

Lucien stood still.

His sword faded slowly.

The man fell.

No dramatic movement.

No last words.

Just… stillness.

Kael walked up beside him.

"…You hesitated," he said.

Lucien didn't deny it.

"Yeah."

Then paused.

"He wasn't a bad person."

Kael looked at the body.

"he wasn't."

Lucien exhaled slowly.

"But he still died."

Kael met his gaze.

"That is the world we live in."

Lucien looked down at his hands.

"I get that now."

Not acceptance, Not yet.

But understanding.

Outside

Elias stood waiting.

"Done?" he asked.

Kael nodded.

Lucien said nothing.

Elias stepped past them into the outpost.

Moments later, he returned holding a small Aether-infused object.

"The job is complete," he said.

Riven stretched.

"Finally."

Nyx glanced at Lucien briefly.

She didn't say anything.

But she understood.

The Weight of a Choice

As they walked away, the forest felt heavier.

Not because of danger.

But because something had changed.

Lucien broke the silence.

"He said it was to save someone."

Kael responded calmly.

"That may be true."

Lucien clenched his jaw.

"And we still killed him."

"Yes."

A pause.

"…Does it get easier from here?" Lucien asked.

Kael didn't answer immediately.

Then said

"No."

Lucien let out a slow breath.

"Good."

Kael glanced at him.

Lucien's eyes were different now.

Not broken.

Not lost.

But… hardened.

"I don't want it to," Lucien said.
