"Just like that," Candice said. Her voice had sharpened. "You cannot simply dismiss me like that."
Loreen looked at her. He had taken her to be quiet and manageable when she first arrived. He had not paid her much attention beyond what the situation required, which in hindsight had probably been a mistake.
Because the woman standing in front of him now, with her chin up and her eyes hard, was not the same person who had sat quietly in the gardens with him.
Something had shifted in her since then and he had a very clear idea of where that shift had come from.
