A few lords exchanged quick glances at that. One of them nodded slightly without meaning to.
Another leaned back, studying him more carefully now, or rather, lady Candice.
Sairis continued, still calm. "My father being born illegitimate does not automatically pass that status to me. It depends entirely on recognition and lawful union, not blood history alone."
For a moment, no one spoke.
Even Greta said nothing.
Sairis finally picked up his cup again, but more carefully this time, though his heart still felt slightly too loud in his chest.
It still surprised him how his priority for the night had shifted from making sure his disguise as Lady Candice was not discovered, to making sure he answered every question thrown at him without fault.
Across the table, King Markus studied him in silence.
King Markus nodded slowly, before he spoke again. "Then, does marrying this legitimate child of an illegitimate father affect the crown prince or his position?"
