In the wake of the World Military Draft, the Marines bolstered their ranks. Beyond the meteoric rise of Admiral Fujitora and Admiral Ryokugyu, others were summoned back to the fold as Vice Admirals and Captains.
Among them was a man who had once been a Marine, only to be cast into the deepest pits of Impel Down over a "certain incident" decades ago.
Released during the mass breakout two years ago, he did not flee. Instead, he marched straight to Fleet Admiral Sakazuki—Akainu himself—and, according to rumors, wept as he begged to be reinstated.
Whether it was his persistence or Sakazuki's hunger for raw power, the man returned.
Marine Headquarters Vice Admiral: "Gyro-Caster" Krieg.
And with his return came a singular, chilling rumor: he was a Pacifist.
His heart was said to be filled with benevolence, his actions with affection, and his goals with ultimate devotion. He was a man overflowing with "love." He was often heard murmuring to those around him:
"Have you ever considered why humans are born?"
It wasn't a question; it was a mantra. Without waiting for a response, he would continue:
"It is to bring peace and order to this world. There is no other reason. Conflict is a trivial, wretched thing.
This power I possess... it was surely granted by the heavens to create a paradise. And not just mine—all 'Devil Fruits' are gifts from above, meant solely for the construction of Eden."
He spoke these words with a gentle smile, but eventually, people stopped listening. They stopped looking him in the eye. Because for all his talk of love and peace, he possessed a terrifying flaw: a blind, fanatical devotion to the Marines' Absolute Justice.
"The Marines are a vanguard of righteousness. We annihilate pirates and villains to protect the weak. If this is not Justice, what is? I am a soldier before I am a saint because the Navy is the physical embodiment of the end of strife."
He was a man perfectly suited for Sakazuki's "Thorough Justice." Even if not a single subordinate followed him, even if no one agreed with his twisted logic, he remained a peerless tool of the state.
And so, he was given an order. Destination: Dressrosa. Mission: Apprehend the insurgents.
"Don't go overboard," his superiors warned.
"Overboard? I don't understand," Krieg replied softly. "I merely execute Justice according to the righteousness of my heart."
He boarded a battleship, ignoring the trembling of the sailors on deck, and ordered them to set sail for the kingdom ruled by the "Heavenly Yaksha," Donquixote Doflamingo.
Dressrosa: The Birdcage
Chaos reigned. The "Hobby-Hobby" curse had broken. Toys were turning back into humans, and the country was screaming. Doflamingo had reacted by deploying the "Birdcage"—a shimmering dome of razor-sharp wire that was slowly shrinking, destined to mince everything inside.
Through the panic walked a man with long, ragged purple hair and a gaunt, skeletal frame. His Marine coat was tattered, and he appeared to carry no weapons.
A pirate, driven mad by Doflamingo's "Parasite" strings, lunged at a group of civilians. Krieg simply pointed a finger.
He flicked his wrist—a tiny, circular motion. Twist.
The pirate's head spun a full 360 degrees. SNAP. A dull, wet crunch echoed through the street. The body hit the pavement, neck twisted like a wrung rag.
The crowd froze. The pirates' comrades, the Marines nearby, and the fleeing citizens all stared in horror.
"Vice Admiral Krieg! What are you doing?!" a Captain screamed, rushing forward.
"What am I doing?" Krieg asked, tilting his head with genuine confusion. "I am stopping a senseless conflict. Is there a problem?"
He pointed at another rioting pirate. Twist.SNAP. Another neck broke.
The pirates recognized the name now. The "Pacifist" Marine. The man who supposedly hated violence.
"You bastard! Stop it!" a pirate roared, grabbing a nearby Marine recruit and pressing a cutlass to the boy's throat. "You're a Pacifist, right?! You won't let your own man die!"
Krieg looked at the hostage. He looked at the pirate. He sighed, a sound of profound sorrow.
"Please, calm down. Perhaps I was too hasty. But there are so many people fighting... every second I waste, the more 'senseless conflict' grows."
Krieg pointed his finger again. Twist.
The Marine recruit's head spun around. SNAP.
"YOU MONSTER!! That was your own man!!" the pirate shrieked, stumbling back in terror.
"Him?" Krieg blinked. "A Marine who allows himself to be taken hostage—even if I saved him now, he would only become a hostage again later, creating more 'senseless conflict.'
It is tragic to strike down a comrade, yes. But a Marine with no value in living is a liability to Peace. In fact... by causing this disturbance, he proved he was never truly my comrade.
Dying by my hand was the only 'Justice' he could offer the world. Don't you think it's better to kill them properly here?"
"You're insane! You call yourself a Pacifist?!"
"I am a Pacifist," Krieg said, his voice trembling with emotion as he pointed at the pirate. "And for the sake of Peace and Order, I will spare no effort... and no sacrifice."
"Wait... please... spare my life..."
"How hurtful. Rest assured," Krieg whispered, his finger beginning to rotate. "I will only take your life. Everything else, you can keep."
Twist—
"Stop right there. I cannot overlook this any longer..."
A hand gripped Krieg's wrist, halting the rotation. It was a man in purple robes, a Marine coat draped over his shoulders, holding a wooden cane. He was blind, with a deep X-shaped scar over his eyes.
"Ah... Admiral Fujitora. This is our first meeting, isn't it?"
Fujitora (Issho) felt a chill go down his spine. He had heard the rumors of the "broken" Vice Admiral, but he hadn't imagined this level of depravity.
"It is our first meeting," Fujitora said, his voice low and dangerous. "I've heard the talk, but seeing this... do you truly claim to be a Pacifist? Or is it all a lie?"
"A lie? Admiral, my Justice is 'One Death, One Thousand Lives' (Issatsu Sensho). I exist solely to end war."
"One Death... One Thousand Lives?"
"Precisely. For every one person I kill, I save a thousand. I just killed four people; therefore, I have saved four thousand. Ah, how glorious! My ideal moves one step closer to reality. Soon, perhaps, they will call me a 'Realist' instead."
Utter madness, Fujitora thought. Even the pirates nearby were trembling.
"The world is what's 'utter madness,'" Krieg said, as if reading his mind. "That is why I demand Order."
He pointed his finger at the pirate Fujitora had just 'saved.' Twist. SNAP.
"That's another thousand saved. But look... There are still so many people struggling."
Krieg rotated his entire hand in a wide arc. Vroom.
In an instant, the necks of ten people—pirates, Marines, and civilians alike—snapped in unison.
"A thousand... another thousand... and another. Ah! How wonderful! Today, I have saved ten thousand lives! At the small cost of ten deaths, I have a net gain of nine thousand, nine hundred and ninety lives saved! I shall offer my deepest prayers for the ten who were sacrificed. It is so sad... taking a life is so, so sad. Truly tragic... so tragic... I am a murderer of ten, but a savior of ten thousand..."
"Vice Admiral Krieg!! Those were innocent people and your own men!!" Fujitora roared, his hand tightening on his hilt. He wanted to strike the man down, but Marine-on-Marine violence would only serve Doflamingo.
"Calm yourself, Admiral. I want to end this 'senseless conflict' as quickly as possible. Why should we fight? We are both Marines. We are comrades in Justice."
Fujitora realized then: words were useless. This man wasn't just "evil"—he was broken.
"…I will report this to Sakazuki-san personally," Fujitora spat. "For now, go to the Royal Palace. Doflamingo is the source of this 'Birdcage.' If you kill him, you save not thousands, but millions. Go 'save' them."
Krieg's eyes lit up. "Millions? Then I shall save millions. Excuse me."
He pointed his finger at the ground and spun it rapidly. A localized hurricane erupted beneath him, lifting him into the sky like a spinning top.
Fujitora watched him go.
"Issatsu Sensho."
The logic was unwavering. The conviction was absolute. Because he was insane, he could not be reasoned with. Because he was insane, he never looked back.
Spin, spin, keep on spinning. Spin until the world is broken and still.
"Gyro-Caster" Krieg. Also known as: "The Madman of Flevance."
The man who had supposedly "saved" the citizens of Flevance by killing hundreds of thousands to end their suffering, then triggered hurricanes that wiped out four neighboring nations to "ensure the peace."
He was the hollow shell of a man who had once tried to reach a "better ending," only to be crushed by reality.
