Chapter 50 - Chapter 50 — The Invitation

The crack didn't close. It spread. A thin fracture ran across the creature's body where Kai's blade had struck. Dark energy leaked from the wound, but it wasn't blood or mana. It was something else—something much deeper.

Kai backed away, his lungs burning and his arm trembling from the impact. He kept his eyes locked on the enemy. "…It worked," he muttered. But deep down, he knew it wasn't enough.

The creature didn't fall. It didn't even stagger. Instead, it straightened its back and began to change. The fracture pulsed like a heartbeat. Once. Twice. Then, the entire dungeon reacted. The ground shook violently, and the trees bent at impossible angles as if an invisible hand were crushing them. The air grew thick, pressing down on them with a heavy, suffocating weight.

Aria gritted her teeth, bracing herself. "…You've got to be kidding me."

"It wasn't even being serious before," Ryen added, his voice barely a whisper.

Kai stayed silent. He could feel the shift. The creature's body expanded, its muscles becoming more defined. The cracks across its skin didn't weaken it—they reinforced it. Its presence doubled, then tripled, filling the room with pure pressure.

It moved. It was a blur of motion, far faster than before. Kai barely had time to blink before the impact hit.

BOOM.

The blow sent him flying. He crashed into the earth, and this time, the ground shattered beneath his weight. Pain exploded through his chest, knocking the wind out of him.

"…Kai!" Aria screamed. She lunged forward, her blades cutting through the air in a desperate flurry of strikes. The creature didn't even bother to defend itself. It simply endured. Her blades landed, but they left no marks.

Before she could retreat, the creature snatched her out of the air.

"Not good—!" Ryen moved instantly, his blade slamming into the creature's arm with everything he had.

CLANG.

For the first time, the monster reacted. Its grip loosened just enough for Aria to break free and roll away. She scrambled to her feet, panting. "…Thanks."

There was no time for relief. The creature was done playing.

Kai pushed himself up slowly. His body felt like lead, heavy and bruised. Beneath him, his shadow began to ripple and surge like boiling oil.

You're done, a voice hissed in his mind.

"…Not yet," Kai wheezed.

Then stop pretending. You can't win without me.

Kai clenched his teeth. He hated it, but the voice was right.

The creature turned. It ignored Aria and Ryen, its empty gaze fixing entirely on Kai. It was always him.

"…Why me…" he muttered.

It attacked again with no hesitation. This time, Kai didn't pull back. He stepped forward to meet it, letting the shadow beneath him spread. He didn't release it fully, but he stopped fighting it. A dark, misty layer coated his limbs, sharpening his movements.

Ryen's eyes widened as he watched from the side. "…So that's it…"

The creature's fist came down like a falling mountain. Kai met it head-on.

BOOM.

The collision shook the cavern, but Kai didn't move an inch. He held his ground, his boots digging into the cracked stone. He twisted, dodging a follow-up swipe, and struck back.

STAB.

His blade sank deep into the original crack. The creature recoiled, taking a step back for the first time in the fight.

Kai's breath hitched. His body was shaking, and the shadow was surging harder now, trying to swallow his consciousness.

"…Not now!" he snapped at the darkness within.

Suddenly, the dungeon went cold. Everything froze—the creature, the falling dust, even the wind. A new presence filled the space. It didn't come from the monster or the walls. It came from somewhere far above.

No words were spoken, but the command was clear: Enough.

The creature stopped mid-motion. Slowly, it lowered its arms. Kai and the others stood paralyzed, realizing that whatever had just spoken was on a completely different level of power.

The creature stepped back—not because it was defeated, but because it was told to leave. It sank into the ground, its dark presence vanishing as quickly as it had appeared.

The pressure lifted. The forest returned to its eerie, unnatural quiet.

Aria let out a long, shaky breath. "…I hate this place."

Ryen didn't look at her. His eyes were fixed on Kai. He had seen the shadow. He had seen the change.

"…Kai," Ryen said quietly.

Kai looked up. Their eyes met, and for the first time, Kai didn't try to hide it. He didn't make an excuse. He just stood there in the silence.

Far away, in a quiet, sunlit office, a folder was placed on a mahogany desk. It was a short report, but it contained exactly what the man behind the desk was looking for.

The Guild Master read the lines slowly, a faint smile tugging at his lips.

"…Found you."

He closed the file and looked at his assistant. "Prepare an invitation."

He paused, his eyes darkening with interest.

"…Not a threat. An opportunity. Something like this is too valuable to ignore."
