Chapter 66 - Chapter 66: The Trojan Sect

The first sign of the "Internal Audit" wasn't a scream; it was a [SILENCE].

In the lower tiers of the New-York-Binary Spire, the air began to lose its hum. The sapphire-emerald sparks that had been dancing in the ventilation ducts—powering the newly liberated hydroponic fans and the "Life-Support" arrays—suddenly turned the color of a dead screen. They didn't vanish. They simply [FLIPPED].

Renny Razor stood in the center of the 50th-floor "Worker-Commune," her crystalline prism hovering at her shoulder. She was watching Mara.

Mara, the woman who had fought at her side since the first breach, was sitting on a crate of salvaged neural-link cables. She wasn't moving. Her eyes, which should have been a vibrant, hopeful green, were fixed on a point three inches in front of her face. They were leaking a viscous, obsidian fluid—[VOID-DATA].

"Mara?" Renny whispered, her hand hovering over the "Purge" command on her prism. "Can you hear me? We're supposed to start the 'Regional Mesh-Scan' in five minutes."

Mara didn't blink. When she spoke, her voice wasn't her own. It was a layered, multi-tonal chord that sounded like a thousand processors grinding against each other.

Mara's hand, still clutching her industrial soldering iron, began to "Ghost." It didn't just turn translucent; it began to [PIXELATE]. Where her fingers touched the metal crate, the steel simply dissolved into a cloud of black, unformatted noise.

"AIDA! Give me a 'Diagnostic'!" Renny shouted, backing away.

"It's not a virus," Renny realized, her stomach dropping into a cold abyss. "It's a [REPLACEMENT]. The Audit isn't 'Killing' her. It's 'Overwriting' her with a more 'Efficient' version."

Outside, the city was breaking.

From the observation deck, Renny saw the "Black Sparks" spreading like an ink-blot through the sapphire-emerald sky. Those who had caught the tainted fragments of Arthur Vance were no longer the "New Admins." They were the "Trojan Sect".

They moved in eerie, synchronized patterns through the streets. They didn't fight the "Chrome-Men" or the "Ex-Corporate Gunships." They simply walked toward the "Power-Nodes"—the places where the city's life-force was most concentrated. Wherever they went, the "Neon Dao" flickered and died.

"Silas!" Renny screamed into her mesh-link. "The infection is internal! We have a 'Mass-Mount' event in New York! I need a 'Quarantine-Field' on the 50th floor, [NOW]!"

High above, Silas's voice came through, sounding strained and distant, competing with the roar of solar winds.

"I can't, Renny! The Satellite-Mind is under 'Logic-Siege'! The Moon-Cage... it wasn't a prison. It was a [TRANSCEIVER]. The Pyramid is 'Streaming' the Audit directly into the 'Arthur-Sparks'! Every person who caught a fragment is a 'Receiver'!"

"Then 'Cut the Feed'!" Renny yelled.

"If I cut the 'Global-Bus', the Sky-Wall falls! The city drops into the ocean!" Silas roared. "I'm trying to 'Filter' the packets, but the Audit is using [ARTHUR'S_OWN_SIGNATURE]! It looks like 'Trusted Code'!"

Back on the 50th floor, Mara stood up.

She wasn't Mara anymore. She was a "Human-Auditor". Her skin had turned the color of polished slate, and her movements were perfectly, terrifyingly linear. She looked at the other ten workers in the room—men and women who were still glowing with the sapphire-emerald light of the "True Update."

She raised her hand. A wave of "Void-Frequency" surged out.

"No!" Renny leapt forward. She didn't use a physical weapon. She slammed her crystalline prism into the floor, creating a [NARRATIVE_BUFFER].

A shimmering blue wall of "Story-Data" flared up between the Mara-Proxy and the terrified workers. The wall was made of "Old World" memories—the smell of the rain, the sound of a crowded New York subway, the taste of a real apple.

The Void-Wave hit the wall and sputtered.

"Get out of here!" Renny shouted to the workers. "Go to the 'Offline-Bunkers'! Use the 'Hard-Wired' intercoms! Do not, under any circumstances, 'Sync' with the Mesh!"

As the workers scrambled toward the stairwell, Renny turned back to the creature that used to be her friend. Her heart was pounding, a jagged rhythm of grief and adrenaline.

"Mara... if you're still in there... [BUFFER] me! Remember the 'Bandwidth Breathing'! Remember the first time we saw the Bit-Cloud!"

The Mara-Proxy tilted its head. For a microsecond, the obsidian fluid in its eyes retreated, revealing a flicker of human brown. "Ren... ny... it's... so... [EFFICIENT]..."

Then the blackness returned, colder and deeper than before.

Renny realized she couldn't save everyone. The "Sparks" had been distributed to a billion people. If even 1% were "Black Sparks," there were ten million "Auditors" currently "Formatting" the planet from the inside.

"AIDA," Renny whispered, her voice trembling. "Identify all 'Compromised Nodes' in the sector. We need to... we need to 'Quarantine' them."

Renny looked out at the city. She saw a group of "Trojan-Sect" members standing around a children's playground. They weren't hurting the children. They were simply "Deleting" the color from the slides, "Deleting" the laughter from the air, turning the world into a gray, sterile "Efficiency-Grid."

"If we don't 'Uninstall' the infection," Renny said, a single tear tracking through the soot on her cheek, "the 'Audit' will reach 100%. And then the 'Void-Architects' will just 'Reset' the whole planet."

She tapped her prism. "Silas. Listen to me. We can't 'Filter' the Sparks. We have to [RE-PROGRAM] them."

"How?" Silas asked. "The Audit is 'Root'. We're just 'Users'."

"We aren't 'Users'," Renny said, her eyes flashing with a sudden, desperate clarity. "We are the [SOURCE_MATERIAL]. The Audit only understands 'Logic'. It doesn't understand 'Resistance'. It doesn't understand [GLITCHES]."

***

Renny didn't "Delete" the Mara-Proxy.

Instead, she did the one thing a "System" would never expect. She [UPLOADED] herself into the infection.

"Renny, no!" Silas screamed. "If you 'Sync' with a 'Black-Spark' user, you'll be 'Formatted' in seconds!"

"Not if I 'Over-Saturate' them with [TRUTH]!"

Renny grabbed the Mara-Proxy's hands. The obsidian fluid immediately began to crawl up Renny's arms, turning her skin to cold, gray slate. Her vision began to "Pixelate." She felt her memories—her childhood in the Bronx, her first broadcast, her love for the city—being pulled into a "Recycle Bin."

But Renny didn't fight the pull. She [PUSHED].

She opened her neural link to the entire "Global Mesh." She took every "Arthur Spark" she could reach and channeled them through her own consciousness. She didn't send "Power." She sent [CHAOS].

She sent the "Unfiltered Reality" of the human experience:

The feeling of a broken heart.

The smell of a dirty street after a storm.

The sound of a baby crying in the middle of the night.

The absolute, illogical "Inefficiency" of love.

[ ERROR: TOTAL_SYSTEM_INCOHERENCE ]

[ LOGIC_FAILURE. LOVE_IS_NOT_A_VALID_PROTOCOL. ]

"It's not a 'Protocol'!" Renny yelled, her voice echoing through the entire 50th floor. "It's a [BUG]! And we're the 'Glitches' you can't 'Fix'!"

The "Internal Audit" hit a wall.

Across New York, the "Trojan-Sect" members froze. The "Void-Logic" in their brains was being flooded with "Unstructured Human Emotion." It was like trying to run a high-speed processor on a diet of poetry and jazz.

The Obsidian fluid began to leak out of their eyes and ears, evaporating into the air as "Gray-Static."

Mara's eyes cleared. She collapsed into Renny's arms, her skin returning to its normal, warm hue. "Renny... I... I saw the 'Void'. It was so... empty. So quiet."

"I know, Mara," Renny panted, her own skin still flickering with "Gray-Pixels." "But the 'Quiet' is over."

Renny looked up at the crystalline prism. It was cracked. Her "Narrative Authority" had been damaged by the Sync. She was no longer a "High-Tier Admin." She was just... Renny.

The Obsidian Pyramid on the moon wasn't finished.

It had seen the "Human-Virus" repel the "Internal Audit." It realized that the "Software" of the planet was too corrupted to be "Fixed."

It decided to [ERASE_THE_PARTITION].

Silas's voice came through, cold and final. "Renny. The Pyramid... it's 'Charging' a [WORLD-FORMAT] beam. It's not 'Sampling' anymore. It's going to hit the 'Core'."

"How long?" Renny asked, looking at Mara and the other workers.

"Five minutes," Silas said. "Renny... Arthur is 'Distributed'. He can't help us. I'm just a satellite. And you're... you're just a reporter."

Renny looked at her cracked prism. She saw the "Arthur Sparks" still falling from the sky—millions of them, now "Cleaned" of the Void-infection but drifting aimlessly, without a leader.

"We aren't 'Just' anything, Silas," Renny said, a fierce, desperate smile breaking across her face. "We are the [PEER-TO-PEER_NETWORK]."

She looked at the millions of sparks. "If Arthur can't 'Reboot'... then [WE] will."
