Chapter 64 - Chapter 64: The Gates of the Sanctuary

Adrian didn't tell them right away.

By morning, the vision still lingered in his mind.

The warning.

The concern in Veyr's brother's eyes.

The final words.

It's waiting to find out what you've become.

Those words bothered him more than he wanted to admit.

Not because they were threatening.

Because they sounded uncertain.

As if even the Sanctuary didn't know what he was anymore.

The journey resumed shortly after sunrise.

The mountains loomed larger now.

Gone were the distant silhouettes on the horizon.

Now they towered overhead, massive walls of stone and mist stretching into the clouds.

The Watchfires still burned.

Closer than before.

Their silver flames flickered atop ancient towers carved directly into the mountainsides.

Kai stared at one as they passed beneath it.

"I hate to admit it," he said, "but this place is impressive."

Adrian glanced upward.

The tower looked impossibly old.

Its stone had been weathered by centuries of wind and rain.

Yet the silver fire burned as brightly as ever.

"Who keeps them lit?"

"No one," Veyr answered.

Kai frowned.

"What?"

"The Watchfires maintain themselves."

Kai stopped walking.

"…I hate that answer."

Adrian laughed.

Even Veyr looked mildly amused.

For a moment, things felt normal.

Then the path turned.

And everyone stopped.

Ahead of them—

The Sanctuary finally appeared.

Silence settled over the mountains.

Not forced.

Natural.

The kind that comes when words aren't enough.

The Sanctuary wasn't a fortress.

Nor was it a city.

It was something in between.

Built directly into the face of a colossal mountain, its structures rose in layers of black stone and silver metal.

Bridges connected towering spires.

Massive terraces stretched across impossible heights.

Ancient symbols glowed faintly across walls larger than castles.

And at the center—

The Gate.

The same gate Adrian had seen in his vision.

The same gate from the Threshold.

Black stone.

Silver symbols.

Towering beyond reason.

Kai finally found his voice.

"…That's a door."

Adrian nodded slowly.

"Technically."

"It's bigger than a mountain."

"Also technically."

Kai groaned.

Veyr simply stared.

His expression had gone unreadable.

Adrian noticed.

"You haven't been back."

"No."

The answer came immediately.

Not hesitant.

Not uncertain.

Certain.

Veyr hadn't returned since he failed.

And now he was standing before it again.

That realization made Adrian strangely sympathetic.

Before he could say anything—

A deep tone echoed through the valley.

The Gate was opening.

Slowly.

Massive stone shifted.

Silver light spilled through widening gaps.

The sound reverberated through the mountains.

Ancient.

Powerful.

Final.

Then figures emerged.

Not soldiers.

Not guards.

Observers.

Six people dressed in long silver robes descended the broad staircase leading from the Sanctuary.

Their movements were calm.

Measured.

Identical.

As if they'd rehearsed this moment a thousand times.

Or expected it.

Which they probably had.

The lead figure stopped several meters away.

An older woman with silver markings across her hands and neck.

Her gaze settled on Adrian instantly.

Not Kai.

Not Veyr.

Adrian.

The mark on his wrist pulsed.

Once.

The woman's eyes narrowed slightly.

Recognition.

"Bearer."

Her voice echoed strangely.

As if multiple voices spoke beneath it.

Adrian resisted the urge to grimace.

"That's me, apparently."

Kai snorted.

The woman ignored him completely.

Which somehow offended him more.

"We have awaited your arrival."

"Good," Adrian said. "Because we came all this way."

Kai covered his face.

Veyr sighed.

The woman simply continued.

"You have crossed the Threshold."

"Yes."

"You have survived the Keeper."

"Yes."

"You have altered the bond."

Adrian hesitated.

"…Probably."

A faint ripple passed through the gathered robed figures.

The closest thing to surprise they'd shown so far

The woman studied him.

Long.

Carefully.

Then she stepped aside.

"The Sanctuary welcomes you."

Silence.

Nothing exploded.

Nothing attacked.

Nothing judged him.

That was suspicious.

Adrian glanced at Kai.

Kai immediately whispered, "This is definitely a trap."

"Agreed."

The woman looked directly at them.

"It is not a trap."

Both of them froze.

"…Can you read minds?" Kai asked.

"No."

A pause.

"You are simply very obvious."

Adrian laughed.

Kai looked betrayed.

The group began ascending the massive staircase.

The Sanctuary's representatives leading the way.

Adrian followed.

Kai followed him.

Veyr followed last.

But before they reached the gates—

The older woman stopped.

Slowly turning toward Veyr.

The atmosphere changed immediately.

The other robed figures became silent.

Still.

Watching.

The woman regarded him for several seconds.

Then spoke.

"Veyr Ashkar."

Veyr stiffened.

The use of his full name clearly meant something.

"You were judged."

"Yes."

"You failed."

Silence.

Adrian's jaw tightened.

Kai looked uncomfortable.

Veyr simply nodded.

"I know."

The woman's gaze softened slightly.

Not with pity.

With understanding.

"Then why have you returned?"

The question lingered in the mountain air.

Veyr looked toward Adrian.

Just briefly.

Then back at the woman.

His answer came without hesitation.

"Because this time…"

A pause.

"…I am not the one being tested."

The woman stared at him.

Then slowly nodded.

As if something important had been confirmed.

"Very well."

She stepped aside once more.

The path was open.

The Gate stood waiting.

Adrian looked up at the colossal entrance.

His heart beat faster.

Not from fear.

From anticipation.

Answers were inside.

Truth.

Secrets.

The reason the Threshold had let him go.

The reason the Sanctuary had called him.

The reason the bond refused to behave like any bond ever recorded.

The woman spoke one final time.

"Once you enter…"

Her gaze locked onto Adrian.

"…the questions you ask may change you."

Adrian smiled faintly.

"Seems to happen a lot lately."

Then he stepped forward.

Crossing the threshold of the Sanctuary.

And somewhere deep within the ancient mountain—

Something awakened.

Something that had been waiting.

For him.
