Chapter 62 - Chapter 62: The Road to the Sanctuary

The gates were opening.

Somewhere beyond mountains Adrian had never seen.

Beyond ruins older than memory.

Beyond answers that seemed impossible.

And somehow—

The Sanctuary was calling him.

That should have worried him.

Instead, it made him curious.

Which worried Kai.

A lot.

"You have that look again."

Adrian glanced over while gathering supplies from a storage room.

"What look?"

"The one that appears right before you do something dangerous."

Adrian tossed a pack over his shoulder.

"That doesn't narrow it down."

Kai groaned.

"Exactly."

Across the room, Veyr was examining an ancient map spread across a stone table.

The map looked older than the arena itself.

Lines of silver ink crossed faded parchment, marking territories Adrian had never heard of.

Most of the names had worn away with time.

One remained.

Sanctuary.

The word was written near the northern edge of the map.

Even from across the room, Adrian could feel something strange when he looked at it.

Like recognition.

Or invitation.

He wasn't sure which was worse.

"How far?" Adrian asked.

Veyr didn't look up.

"Five days."

Kai nearly dropped the bag he was holding.

"Five days?"

"Around."

Kai stared.

"You said it like that was normal."

"It is."

"No, it isn't."

Adrian laughed.

For once, the sound came easily.

The tension from the Keeper's attack hadn't vanished completely, but it had loosened.

The constant pressure was gone.

The feeling of being hunted had faded.

That alone felt strange.

Almost unnatural.

The mark pulsed softly beneath his sleeve.

Quiet.

Listening.

Not demanding.

Not pulling.

Just there.

Adrian still wasn't sure he trusted it.

But at least it wasn't trying to drag him into another dimension.

That was progress.

Probably.

Hours later, they departed.

The arena disappeared behind them as they crossed the outer ridges surrounding the settlement.

The landscape changed quickly.

Stone pathways gave way to rocky terrain.

Ancient forests spread across valleys below.

Mist drifted between distant cliffs.

The world felt larger than Adrian remembered.

Or perhaps he had simply spent too long focused on surviving.

Kai stretched his arms behind his head.

"You know what's weird?"

"Everything?"

"Besides that."

Adrian smirked.

Kai continued.

"The silence."

Adrian understood immediately.

No shadow hunter.

No Keeper.

No sudden attacks.

Just wind.

Trees.

Sky.

Normal things.

It felt almost suspicious.

Veyr walked ahead without speaking.

His eyes constantly scanned the horizon.

Adrian noticed.

"You think something's following us?"

"Possibly."

Kai sighed.

"Of course."

Veyr glanced back.

"The absence of danger is not the same as safety."

"That's the most Veyr sentence you've ever said."

Adrian couldn't argue with that.

The first day passed without incident.

The second did not.

It began near sunset.

They were crossing a narrow mountain path when Adrian felt it.

A pulse.

Not from the mark.

From somewhere ahead.

He stopped immediately.

Kai nearly walked into him.

"What now?"

Adrian looked toward the mountains.

"…Did you feel that?"

Kai frowned.

"No."

Veyr had already stopped moving.

His expression darkened.

"You sensed it."

"Sensed what?"

Veyr looked toward the distant peaks.

"The barrier."

Silence.

Adrian blinked.

"The Sanctuary has a barrier?"

Veyr nodded.

"Yes."

A pause.

"It shouldn't be active."

The mark pulsed.

Hard.

For the first time since leaving.

A flash crossed Adrian's vision.

A gate.

Silver symbols.

Black stone.

Then—

A figure standing before it.

Watching.

Waiting.

The vision vanished instantly.

Adrian staggered slightly.

Kai caught his shoulder.

"What happened?"

Adrian stared toward the mountains.

"…Someone's there."

Veyr's eyes narrowed.

"At the Sanctuary?"

Adrian nodded.

"I think so."

The air suddenly felt colder.

Not physically.

Instinctively.

Like the world itself had gone quiet.

Even the wind had stopped.

Kai slowly turned.

"…Guys."

Adrian followed his gaze.

So did Veyr.

Across a distant ridge—

Far beyond what should have been visible—

A light appeared.

Silver.

Bright.

Impossible.

Then another.

And another.

One by one, lights ignited across the mountains.

A chain of signals stretching toward the horizon.

Veyr went completely still.

"…No."

Kai looked at him.

"What?"

Veyr's voice was lower than Adrian had ever heard it.

"The Watchfires."

The name carried weight.

History.

Fear.

Adrian didn't like either.

"What are Watchfires?"

Veyr stared at the distant lights.

Ancient recognition in his eyes.

"They were used to warn the Sanctuary."

Silence.

Kai frowned.

"To warn them about what?"

Veyr looked at Adrian.

Only Adrian.

And suddenly—

The answer became obvious.

About who.

The mark on Adrian's wrist flared.

A sharp pulse.

The distant lights brightened.

One after another.

As if responding.

As if confirming.

As if a message was being passed across the mountains.

He's coming.

Adrian felt a chill run through him.

Not fear.

Not exactly.

But certainty.

The Sanctuary hadn't called him by accident.

They knew he was coming.

They had known before he arrived.

And somewhere beyond those mountains—

Someone was waiting.

Watching.

Preparing.

The last Watchfire ignited.

Its silver flame rising into the darkening sky.

And for the first time since the journey began

Adrian realized he might not be walking toward answers.

He might be walking into a welcome he didn't understand.

Or a trap.

The troubling part was that he couldn't tell which.
