Chapter 48 - Chapter 48: The First Cut

The silence after the breakthrough didn't last.

Not really.

It only changed shape.

Adrian stood in the center of the arena longer than necessary.

The mark on his wrist had stopped pulsing like a demand.

Now it behaved differently.

Like it was thinking.

It's still there," Kai said quietly.

Adrian nodded. "Yeah."

Veyr studied him. "But it's no longer pulling."

Adrian flexed his fingers slightly. "Feels like it's waiting for permission now."

Kai frowned. "That's dangerous in its own way."

Adrian glanced at him. "Everything about this is dangerous."

He closed his eyes.

For a moment, he tried to feel it again.

Not reach.

Not activate.

Just sense it.

And there it was

A thin thread.

Faint.

Almost invisible.

But real.

I can still find it," Adrian muttered.

Veyr nodded. "Good. That means it's not gone."

Kai crossed his arms. "And it means it can still grow back if you slip."

Adrian opened his eyes. "Yeah. I figured that part too."

A pause settled between them.

Then Adrian turned slightly. "So what now?"

Kai didn't answer immediately.

Veyr did.

Now we test distance."

Adrian raised a brow. "Distance?"

Veyr stepped closer. "If you can starve the connection while it's near you…"

A pause.

We need to know what happens when you're far from it."

Kai nodded slowly. "If it weakens with no response, distance might accelerate it."

Adrian exhaled. "Or it might snap back harder when I return."

Silence.

That possibility hung heavier than the rest.

Adrian scratched the back of his neck. "So basically, I might make it mad."

Kai didn't deny it.

Veyr only said, "Possibly."

Adrian let out a short laugh. "Love that. We're experimenting with a shadow parasite that gets offended."

No one laughed.

Then Kai stepped forward. "We don't have to rush it."

Adrian looked at him.

Kai's tone softened slightly. "You just learned control. Don't throw it away trying to prove something."

Adrian studied him for a moment.

Then shrugged. "I'm not trying to prove anything."

A beat.

I just don't like sitting here while it thinks it still owns me."

Veyr nodded once. "Then we proceed carefully."

He glanced at Adrian's wrist again. "But not here."

Adrian frowned. "Why not?"

Veyr's expression darkened slightly. Because something noticed the shift."

That made the air tighten.

Kai straightened. "Explain."

Veyr's gaze lifted slightly, as if looking past the arena itself.

When the connection weakened… it didn't just lose access."

A pause.

It sent feedback."

Adrian's expression sharpened. "…Feedback?"

Veyr nodded. "A signal. A correction response."

Kai muttered, "Like it's recalibrating."

Adrian exhaled slowly. "Or tracking."

The word settled heavy.

For a moment, even the shadows around the arena seemed still.

Then

A faint pulse ran through Adrian's wrist.

Not a pull.

Not an invitation.

Something else.

Adrian stiffened. "Did you feel that?"

Kai stepped closer immediately. "Feel what?"

Adrian looked down. "It just

Another pulse.

Stronger this time.

Veyr's eyes narrowed sharply. "It's reacting to awareness."

Adrian's jaw tightened. "It knows I'm paying attention to it now."

Kai's voice lowered. "That's new."

Veyr nodded grimly. "No. That's evolution."

Adrian let out a slow breath. "So ignoring it weakens it."

A pause.

But noticing it makes it smarter."

No one corrected him.

Kai looked at Veyr. "So what's the move?"

Veyr answered simply.

We move before it adjusts fully."

Adrian rolled his shoulders once.

Good."

Kai frowned. "Good?"

Adrian's eyes sharpened slightly. "…If it's adapting, that means we're actually affecting it."

A faint smirk returned.

I'd rather fight something that reacts than something that controls me silently."

Silence.

Then Veyr turned slightly toward the exit of the arena.

There's a place."

Kai looked at him. "Where?"

Veyr's voice dropped.

A dead zone in the network."

Adrian tilted his head. "Network?"

Veyr glanced at his wrist.

Where connections fail to stabilize."

A pause.

If anything can disrupt the link fully, it's there.

Kai didn't like that immediately.

Adrian, however, stepped forward.

Then that's where we go."

Kai grabbed his arm lightly. "You're moving too fast."

Adrian looked at him. "No. I'm moving while I still have control."

A beat.

Then he added quietly

Before it learns how to take it back."

That made Kai pause.

Slowly, he released his grip.

Veyr turned fully now. "We leave tonight."

Adrian nodded once. "Good."

He looked down at his wrist one more time.

The mark pulsed again.

Not stronger.

Not weaker.

Just… aware.

Adrian whispered under his breath.

Let's see how smart you really are."

And far away

Something responded.

Not with force.

Not with anger.

But with attention.

Because the game had changed again.

And this time

It was watching more closely than before.
