Chapter 345: Edge
The ridge zone passed behind them on the fourth day, and the network began to thin.
Kai felt it on the map before the land showed it. The zones did not vanish all at once. They dropped back one at a time, the way they had come up — the far ones first, then the medium ones, until only the close pair held bright behind him and the rest were steady points at the edge of his read.
The ground changed with the map. The high green grass grew shorter. The trees thinned to ordinary autumn. The animals were fewer, and the ones they saw lifted their heads and moved off the way animals were supposed to.
They were walking out of the changed country. Out the western side of it, toward the long stretch of ordinary highland that ran back to Kael's Seat.
