Chapter 14 - Chapter 14: Given Away

The closer she got—

the more the silence changed.

At first, it wasn't silence at all.

It was distant.

Soft.

Voices blending together somewhere ahead.

Laughter.

Low conversations layered over one another.

A gathering already alive.

Gold's steps slowed slightly.

Not enough to stop—

but enough to notice.

They were already there.

Waiting.

Not for something to begin—

But for her.

Lina walked beside her.

Close.

Steady.

For a moment, that was the only thing that felt real.

Then—

they reached the end of the hallway.

The doors stood ahead.

Tall.

Closed.

Final.

The sound from the other side felt clearer here—

but also distant.

Like it belonged somewhere she hadn't stepped into yet.

Gold stopped.

Not because she wanted to—

but because something inside her did.

Lina did too.

Silence slipped between them.

Not heavy.

Just… there.

Then Lina turned slightly toward her.

No teasing this time.

No lightness.

Just her.

"It's up to you now."

"Cheer up my friend"

The words were quiet.

Careful.

And somehow—

they stayed.

Gold didn't respond immediately.

Her gaze stayed forward.

On the doors.

On what waited beyond them.

Then—

she nodded.

Just once.

That was enough.

Lina stepped back.

Not slowly.

Not dramatically.

Just enough to create space.

And then—

she was gone.

Not completely.

But no longer beside her.

Gold felt it instantly.

That absence.

That quiet shift.

Her fingers curled slightly at her side.

But she didn't turn.

Didn't look back.

Because if she did—

something might change.

And nothing about this felt like something that could change anymore.

A voice came from beyond the doors.

Clear.

Formal.

Announcing.

Her.

The sound carried through the space—

measured.

Intentional.

And then—

everything on the other side shifted.

The laughter faded.

The voices lowered.

One by one—

they disappeared.

Until—

there was no sound in the hall.

No movement.

No sound.

Just silence.

Waiting.

Gold's breath slowed.

Her chest rose—then settled.

This was it.

The doors began to open.

Slowly.

Not rushed.

Not forced.

Just enough to let the light spill through first.

It didn't flood the space.

It shifted.

Turning.

Focusing.

Like the entire room had adjusted—

just for her.

The space beyond revealed itself piece by piece.

Wide.

Endless.

And filled.

Gold stepped forward.

The moment she crossed the threshold—

everything changed.

The light followed.

Not harsh.

Not blinding.

But precise.

Falling over her—

catching the fabric of her gown.

The subtle shimmer moved with her.

Each step sending faint reflections outward

soft glints that disappeared as quickly as they came.

Not overwhelming.

Just enough to be seen.

And felt.

The silence inside the hall was absolute.

Not empty—

but controlled.

Every eye was on her.

She felt it.

Without needing to look.

Her father stood waiting ahead.

Already in place.

Like he had always been there.

He didn't speak.

Didn't ask.

He simply extended his arm.

Expectation.

Gold looked at it for a moment.

Then placed her hand there.

Her fingers rested lightly.

Not gripping.

Not holding.

Just… placed.

And then—

they walked.

Step.

Step.

Step.

The sound of her glass heels echoed—

soft—

but clear in the silence.

The hall stretched endlessly before her.

Larger than she imagined.

Rows filled with people—

dressed in quiet elegance.

Still.

Watching.

Not whispering.

Not reacting.

Just… observing.

The air felt different here.

Heavier.

Layered with something subtle.

Expensive.

Controlled.

Nothing about it felt accidental.

This was supposed to be a happy day.

The thought slipped in—

quiet.

Uninvited.

Mine.

Her fingers shifted slightly against her father's arm.

You made sure it wasn't.

She didn't look at him.

Didn't need to.

Because she already knew—

he wouldn't answer.

Another step.

The distance didn't feel shorter.

If anything—

it stretched.

A memory surfaced.

Sharp.

"You don't understand what's at stake."

Her father's voice.

From before.

From a time when she still believed she could refuse.

Her jaw tightened slightly.

She hadn't understood then.

Now—

she did.

The weight of the gown followed her.

Heavy.

Certain.

Each step reminding her—

this wasn't something she could step out of.

Her gaze lifted slightly.

The end of the aisle came into view.

At first—

just a shape.

Then clearer.

A figure.

Still.

Waiting.

She didn't focus immediately.

Didn't let her eyes settle fully.

Not yet.

Another step.

Closer.

And then—

she saw him.

Standing there.

Unmoving.

Composed.

Dressed in dark precision—

tailored perfectly to his form.

Nothing out of place.

Nothing uncertain.

He didn't shift.

Didn't adjust.

Didn't look away.

He was already watching her.

Of course he was.

A quiet thought settled in.

He belongs here.

Something in her chest tightened.

Not sharply.

Just… deeply.

They moved closer.

Until there was nowhere left to go.

They stopped.

Right in front of him.

The movement ended.

Her father shifted slightly.

A small motion—

but final.

Gold felt it before she saw it.

Her hand was taken.

Lifted gently.

And then—

placed.

Into his.

No words.

No pause.

Just action.

His hand closed around hers.

Not tight.

Not hesitant.

Just… certain.

His palm was cooler than she expected.

Not cold enough to pull away—

but enough to notice.

His fingers adjusted slightly—

shifting her hand in his.

Positioning.

Not asking.

Just placing it where it belonged.

Gold's breath changed—

just slightly.

Barely there.

But real.

Behind her—

her father stepped away.

No speech.

No explanation.

Just distance.

And somehow—

that said everything.

Gold didn't turn.

Didn't look back.

Because if she did—

something might break.

And she couldn't afford that.

Not here.

Not now.

She stood beside him.

Close enough to feel his presence.

Without fully acknowledging it.

The silence settled again.

Heavy.

Waiting.

Her fingers remained into his plam where they had been placed.

Still.

Unmoving.

Certain.

And the thought came—

quiet.

Final.

I hadn't even looked away…

A breath passed.

…and it already felt like there was no way out.
