The secondary dimension held what it had become: the silver-barked trees and the roses and the butterflies and the small pond with its clear water and the warm light of a space that had been reformed around the possibility of something other than grief.
They sat in it together in the specific way that two people sit together when they have just said the true things and the true things are settling into the architecture of what they are to each other, which is a process that is not fast even when both parties want it to be, because the process has its own pace and rushing it produces a less accurate result.
Azzu told him about the Old Epoch before the war: before the Drago Sphere, before the Old Gods' paranoia had fully crystallized into action. What it had been like to be a dragon in the world's younger days when the ecological architecture of the planet was still in the process of establishing itself and dragonkind occupied the specific niche of beings who were old enough to remember the previous configuration and observant enough to be useful to the civilizations that were too young to have that memory.
She described it with the quality of someone who had loved it. Not sentimentally. With the accurate appreciation of someone who had seen what was good in a specific time and had not let the subsequent events retroactively poison the goodness. The mountains. The specific quality of light in the high altitudes where the temperature was cold enough to keep the air clear. The sleeping, which was different for dragonkind than for other species: longer, deeper, the specific quality of a consciousness that was comfortable being absent from the world for extended periods because it had been absent before and had returned to find the world still there.
Amiss listened to this and felt a specific kind of attention developing in him that System Blue had no instrument for, because System Blue's instruments were oriented toward understanding systems and this was not that. This was the attention that forms when you find someone's specific experience of a specific world genuinely interesting in a way that has nothing to do with what it tells you about the world and everything to do with what it tells you about the person.
He told her, in exchange, about being a physicist in the previous multiverse.
Not the broad strokes — she had those from the memory transfer. The specific texture: the specific pleasure of an equation yielding an unexpected result, which was a pleasure that lived in a very specific location in a physicist's experience of their work and that he had not accessed since waking up in the Blue Fog World. The specific quality of a problem that had been running in the background of his consciousness for months and then resolved cleanly in the middle of doing something else, producing the particular interruption-of-whatever-else that his colleagues had learned to recognize as the sign that he had found something.
He started to form a specific memory — a building, an evening, the quality of a particular kind of friendship. More specific than the fragment that had dissolved earlier. The colleague whose name was starting to surface from the archived depth of the physicist's life.
Azzu laughed at something he had said. He looked at her.
The memory dissolved.
The laugh was still there.
He looked at the laugh and thought: this is a good trade. The specific quality of a thought that does not require analysis because its own logic is already complete.
He thought: I will think about the previous things. I will return to them when the present is quieter. I will ask Nirvonis the question I have been forming. But not now, because now is this, and this is —
Azzu's laugh faded to a smile.
The smile was the kind that remained after the laugh, the kind that had the laugh still in it but had become something more sustained. The kind that belongs to a face that has found something worth smiling about and has decided to keep finding it.
He thought: yes. Now is this.

The Super Mini World had the specific quality, by late afternoon, of a space that two people had been inhabiting together long enough that the space had begun to organize itself around both of them rather than around one. This was visible in small ways: the roses had distributed themselves more evenly through the forest floor rather than clustering near Azzu's original position. The light had shifted to the quality that afternoon light has when it is coming through silver-barked trees at an angle, which was a quality neither of them had been responsible for choosing but which was precisely correct for what the space currently was.
The practical conversation ran alongside the other conversation, because they were both people for whom the practical and the personal were not separable. Azzu's Old God enemies — the remaining seven to nine she believed were still active, the Eldritch Horror that had corrupted elves and dwarves and the one said to have drifted toward Earth. The plan, rough and preliminary: information gathering first, understanding the current world's configuration of power before making any moves that would register on the Astral substrate. The Blue Fog World meeting in two days where she would be introduced to Nirvonis, Eva, Ascen, Aurora.
Amiss described the meeting structure with the specific quality of someone who finds domestic details genuinely interesting.
"The table has thirteen chairs. Three are occupied. One is going to be yours. The Core sits in the center. Nirvonis is increasingly human in ways that are both progress and slightly unsettling to observe, because each new human quality arrives with the quality of something discovering for the first time what it is capable of, which is endearing and also sometimes alarming. Eva will have already read your weight before you sit down and will say something true about you. Ascen will have questions."
"You said that before. About the questions."
"It's accurate. He is a ten-year-old with two civilizations of scholarship and a development plan that includes Necromancy, Alchemy, and Sealed Artifacts. He will have questions about your composite pathway architecture specifically."
"I don't mind questions."
"Good. He doesn't either. He asks them the way serious practitioners ask them: wanting the accurate answer rather than the comfortable one."
Azzu looked at Amiss with the reading running.
"He sounds like you."
"He has different hair,"
Amiss said.
She laughed again. This time he was ready for it and did not lose any thoughts in the process.

The afternoon moved at the pace of the secondary dimension, which had its own temporal logic, and at some point in its passage, the quality of the time changed from the time of significant conversations to the time that follows them: the time when two people have said the things that needed to be said and are now simply present in the same space, which is a different quality of presence from the presence that arrives with conversation and that requires nothing except being there.
Amiss created the bed from the secondary dimension's combined element-affinities, using the technique that the End Bond had given him access to through the fusion of Azzu's elemental affinities with his own Reality Virtualization: drawing from the earth and wood and silk elements present in the secondary dimension's substrate, organizing them through intention rather than force, producing a form that existed because it was needed and was precisely adequate to being needed.
Purple-blue in color, with a pitch black blanket that had the specific quality of the Darkness Sand end of his power palette: dense and soft and carrying the warmth of something that had absorbed significant heat over a long period of time.
Azzu looked at it.
"You made a bed."
"The secondary dimension has suitable materials. The technique is new but the principle is straightforward."
"You made a bed in approximately forty seconds."
"Thirty-five. The silk component takes a moment."
She was looking at him with the expression that was somewhere between the laugh and the smile: the specific expression that belongs to a face that has decided that the person in front of it is a specific kind of ridiculous that is also specifically appealing.
"Shall we."
He looked at the bed and at her and at the changed secondary dimension with its silver trees and its roses and its butterflies and the small pond that caught the afternoon light and gave it back in small pieces.
"Yes,"
he said.
They went to the bed, and the secondary dimension held the quality of a space that has become what it was supposed to be, and the afternoon light continued its work through the silver-barked trees, and the butterflies continued their butterfly work, and the pond was still and clear, and somewhere above the sealed cave and the sealed secondary dimension and the Ather-rich sky of the Ashan Reach, the two suns of the binary system moved through their slow crossing of the sky, and the world continued to be the world, which was what it had always done.
The secondary dimension held its warmth.
Outside the cave, the savannah was quiet with the specific quiet of late afternoon on a planet that had been beautiful before people had names for it and would be beautiful after any given conversation had finished. The grass moved in the light wind. The Koeta Beasts that had given the cave entrance a wide berth for forty years maintained their distance, following the instinct that had kept them alive in a world with things in it they could not name.
In the Blue Fog World, the Core pulsed its three colors. The Distributed Apotheosis permeability ran at its usual level. The empty chairs waited.
In the Solomon Imperial Palace, Eva closed the Necromancy text that she had been explaining to Ascen and felt, through the substrate she shared with Amiss, the specific quality of a draw that was not depletion. The End-nature running at a level that corresponded not to expenditure but to: being fully present in a situation that required all of him.
She read the weight of it.
She said, to no one, in the specific way she said things that were true and that she was glad were true:
Good.
The domain received the weight at its full measure and held it accurately and did not round toward a more comfortable approximation because the accurate measure was already, all on its own, comfortable.
