Chapter 37 - The Machinery

The counter-challenge was forty-seven pages.

Damian read it at the back table in the bookshop during the lunch hour when the shop was quiet and the street outside was doing its midday things. Sandra had sent it at ten with a cover note that said: *Read pages 1-12 and 31-40 first. The rest is procedural filler designed to make it look more substantial than it is.*

He read all forty-seven pages anyway.

Because he'd learned, over four years of having things happen to him through systems he didn't fully understand, that the procedural filler was sometimes where the real damage lived.

Sandra had been right about the three main arguments.

The forged signature argument occupied twelve pages and used a lot of words to say something relatively simple — that the Voss family's historical interest existed prior to the original approach and therefore was not contingent on the method of that approach. It was the weakest of the three. Damian could see its weaknesses without legal training.
