According to Kreacher, Vera had inherited the Black family's good looks and bore quite a strong resemblance to her birth father.
As for that, her Charisma stat of 8 already said it all.
Who exactly Snape might be reminded of when he looked at her, however, she had no idea.
Without revealing anything, Vera rolled her wheelchair forward and gave a slight nod.
"Good morning, Madam Pomfrey, Professor Snape. Thank you for making the trip."
"No need to be so polite, dear," Madam Pomfrey said kindly. "Could we sit down somewhere first? I need to get a detailed understanding of your condition."
Kreacher appeared at just the right moment, leading everyone into the sitting room and serving hot tea and refreshments.
Madam Pomfrey took out her wand and gave it a gentle wave.
"Please relax, Miss Black. I need to perform a basic examination first."
A soft blue glow flowed from the tip of her wand, enveloping Vera's entire body like rippling water.
Vera could clearly see the path that magic took inside her body—it traveled downward along her spine, gradually dimming below the waist.
Madam Pomfrey's brows slowly drew together.
"This is more complicated than I expected…"
She hesitated, as though uncertain whether she ought to tell the diagnosis to an eleven-year-old girl.
But…
there was plainly no adult left in the Black household to make decisions for Vera.
Vera saw through Madam Pomfrey's hesitation and said calmly, "Please speak plainly, Madam. I have the right to know my own condition."
Madam Pomfrey exchanged a glance with Snape, then at last sighed.
"A complete spinal cord injury, along with severe compression damage to parts of the nervous system, causing irreversible trauma…"
"Yes. The car hit from the side. My adoptive mother barely managed to shove me out of the way, but my lower body was still trapped between the car door and the wall," Vera explained evenly.
During the first three days after transmigrating, she had spent a long time coming to terms with her current situation and sorting through the life of the original Vera.
From the fragments of memory she had, the original Vera seemed never to have met her biological parents. She had been adopted and raised by a Muggle foster mother from childhood and had never known she was a witch.
Then, after the accident, she was sent to the hospital. Just when she had been declared beyond saving, Kreacher—who had been searching all this time for Regulus's orphaned child—found her and took her to St. Mungo's.
The good news was that the magic of this era did indeed possess some advantages over Muggle medicine, and it had successfully pulled the dying Vera back from the brink.
But…
that was as far as it could go.
For the next half year, Vera could do nothing but struggle against illness every single day.
But in the end, a ten-year-old girl, with no family and no friends, cared for only by a house-elf, had lost the will to keep fighting. A few days before her Hogwarts letter arrived, she quietly passed away.
That was when Vera transmigrated into this body.
After hearing her explanation, the expressions of the two adult wizards present grew even heavier.
"Poor child…" Madam Pomfrey sighed softly, and there was now an added note of tenderness in her gaze. Then she continued, "The neural connections are almost completely severed, and the muscles have atrophied to varying degrees…"
Snape suddenly spoke, his oppressive eyes fixed on Vera.
"What potions have you been taking?"
Vera gestured for Kreacher to bring over the medicine chest.
"Mostly muscle-repair potions and nerve-calming draughts. Once a week, I also take a strong restorative potion."
Snape picked up a bottle of emerald-green potion, gave it a slight shake, and held it to the light for inspection. Then he delivered his judgment without mercy.
"An outdated formula, crudely brewed, with highly limited therapeutic value."
Kreacher's ears drooped at once, and he murmured defensively, "That was already prescribed by the finest healer at St. Mungo's…"
Snape gave a cold snort and set the bottle back down.
"Then that healer's competence is open to serious question."
He turned to Madam Pomfrey.
"What do you think?"
Madam Pomfrey lowered her wand and hesitated before answering, "To be honest, with the current state of magical medicine, all we can do is try formulating stronger potions. At the very least… they may reduce the pain and slow the progression of muscle atrophy."
In other words, she too believed that a complete recovery was unlikely.
Vera let out a quiet breath, but there was very little visible change in her expression.
"I understand. Thank you both for the diagnosis," she said calmly. "Relieving the symptoms would already be a great help."
Snape narrowed his eyes slightly, a new note of scrutiny entering his gaze.
"Miss Black, you do not seem particularly surprised by this conclusion."
Vera met his eyes openly.
"Professor, I've been living with these legs for over half a year. Quite obviously, I've already learned to accept reality."
"A commendable degree of… rationality," Snape said. His expression seemed to darken a little further, though he did not press the matter any further.
Madam Pomfrey took several small bottles from the medical case she had brought with her.
"My dear, these are a few potions I compounded myself. They can help relieve nerve pain and muscle spasms. And…"
She hesitated for a moment, then produced one more vial.
"This is a concentrated nutrient tonic. You're far too thin and frail—you need nourishment."
Vera accepted the potions and thanked her softly.
She could feel the pity in Madam Pomfrey's eyes, and it made her somewhat uncomfortable.
Then Snape abruptly pulled out a sheet of parchment from inside his robes. With quick strokes of his quill, he wrote down several lines and handed it to Kreacher.
"Prepare the ingredients according to this prescription," he said without even looking up. "From now on, I'll send the finished potions weekly by owl. They will at least be more effective than the… things you've been using."
Kreacher took the prescription with trembling hands and looked as though he might burst into tears.
"Thank you, Professor Snape! Kreacher will prepare everything!"
Vera, for her part, wasn't particularly surprised. Leaving aside Snape's身份 as a double agent, this was a task Dumbledore had personally assigned him. Naturally, he had to do something.
"Thank you very much, Professor," she said sincerely. "This will help me a great deal."
Snape paused his writing and glanced at her.
"It is my duty," he replied simply.
After the examination concluded, Madam Pomfrey carefully recorded Vera's condition in detail and promised she would coordinate with the other Hogwarts professors to ensure Vera's daily life at school would be as convenient as possible.
Then she and Snape departed once more through the Floo Network.
Vera leaned lightly back against her wheelchair and lowered her eyes to her legs.
"Irreversible damage…" she murmured.
Kreacher edged closer, cautious and worried.
"Miss… are you all right?"
"I'm fine, Kreacher," Vera answered softly, her eyes falling on the prescription Snape had left behind. "Prepare the ingredients as the professor instructed."
"Yes, Miss!"
The house-elf bowed deeply, then vanished with a crack.
