August 4th dawned bright over Tokyo, the summer sun spilling golden light through the thin curtains of Lena's Airbnb bedroom.
She woke early—far earlier than her usual training alarm—her body buzzing with an unfamiliar mix of nerves and excitement.
Twenty.
The number felt both monumental and strangely uncomfortable as she lay there for a moment, staring at the ceiling.
Her mother had already left for Thomas and Mia's place to watch the kids, leaving the small area quiet and entirely hers for the day.
Lena didn't fully understand why she took extra time getting ready. She stood in front of the small mirror, brushing her brown hair until the natural waves fell softly around her shoulders instead of her usual tight ponytail.
She chose a simple white tank top that showed off her toned arms and shoulders, paired with comfortable denim shorts and lightweight sneakers.
A touch of lip balm, a spritz of light perfume she rarely wore.
She caught her reflection and shook her head with a small laugh.
"It's just a birthday. Not a date." Yet she couldn't quite shake the flutter in her stomach.
At exactly 10 a.m., a knock sounded on the door.
Lena's heart jumped.
She opened it to find Kaito standing there, a warm smile lighting his face.
He wore a casual black t-shirt and shorts, his short hair neatly tousled.
In his hands he held a beautifully arranged bouquet of white roses—except in the center, nestled safely among the stems, was a tiny calico kitten with bright eyes and soft patchwork fur.
"Happy birthday, Lena," he said, voice warm.
Lena's eyes widened. She let out a genuine scream of delight, hands flying to her mouth before she carefully reached for the kitten.
"No fucking way! You got me a fucking cat?!"
Kaito laughed, handing over the bouquet carefully.
"I didn't know if real white roses were dangerous for cats, so I got fake ones for the arrangement. But here—" He pulled a second, proper bouquet of fresh white roses from behind his back. "These are for you."
Lena cradled the tiny kitten against her chest, its little paws kneading happily.
"You're insane. In the best way obviously."
She ushered him inside, setting the kitten gently on the floor while she found a vase for the real roses.
The flowers looked elegant on the counter, their petals soft and fragrant. While she arranged them, Kaito slipped back outside briefly and returned with another gift: a compact portable radio speaker.
Lena screamed again—louder this time—then clapped a hand over her mouth, eyes sparkling.
"Sorry! I'm being so fucking stupid." She took the speaker, setting it on the counter with pure joy. "This is perfect."
She looked at Kaito, a happy pout on her face that quickly melted into a genuine smile.
Without thinking, she stepped forward and hugged him tightly. "Thanks."
Kaito hugged her back, his arms strong and steady. "Ah, it's your birthday. No worries. Now come on. We got the whole day ahead of us."
The day unfolded like a dream montage of Tokyo's best offerings.
Kaito had planned it thoughtfully, and Lena followed with growing excitement.
They started at a nearby cat café, where dozens of cats lounged on shelves and towers.
Lena's new calico kitten (temporarily named "Temp" until they could decide) stayed safely at home, but the café cats more than made up for it.
Lena spent nearly an hour petting a fluffy Maine Coon, laughing when it headbutted her hand for more scratches.
Kaito snapped photos of her buried in cats, her face lit with pure joy.
"You look like you belong here more than on the mat," he teased.
She retaliated by placing a sleepy tabby on his lap, watching him freeze comically as it purred.
From there, they wandered to Meiji Shrine.
The towering torii gate welcomed them into a serene forest path lined with ancient trees. Sunlight poured through the leaves as they walked side by side.
Lena paused at the purification fountain, copying Kaito's motions as he showed her the proper way to cleanse hands and mouth.
They wrote wishes on ema plaques—Lena's simple: Worlds gold. Kaito's remained private, but he hung it with a small smile.
They took silly selfies in front of the shrine, Lena making exaggerated serious faces while Kaito photobombed with peace signs.
Lunch was street food heaven near Harajuku.
They shared takoyaki—hot octopus balls crispy on the outside, gooey inside—and crepes filled with strawberries and cream.
Lena laughed as Kaito got sauce on his chin, reaching over to wipe it with a napkin.
"You're so messy."
He grinned back. "Literally could say the same thing about you."
The afternoon took them to a quiet park with willow trees swaying gracefully by a small pond.
Lena's earlier words echoed as she stood beneath one, the long branches brushing her shoulders like gentle fingers.
She closed her eyes, breathing in the peace.
Kaito watched her quietly, then challenged her to a silly stone-skipping contest on the pond.
She won handily, but he claimed victory on "style points," striking dramatic poses with each throw.
They filmed short videos—Lena demonstrating judo footwork on the grass, Kaito attempting (and failing hilariously) to copy her.
As evening approached, they wandered through an arcade. Bright lights and electronic beeps surrounded them.
Lena dominated the fighting games, trash-talking Kaito as her character knocked his out.
"Too tense, again!" He got revenge on the rhythm games, pulling her into a two-player mode where they danced side by side, laughing through missed steps.
Photos and videos piled up on both their phones—silly faces, victory poses, shots of Lena mid-laugh with a cat on her shoulder or under a willow tree.
By the time they returned to the Airbnb as the sky turned deep indigo, Lena's cheeks hurt from smiling.
The little calico kitten greeted them with tiny meows.
They cooked dinner together in the small kitchen—simple grilled chicken, rice, and vegetables.
Kaito chopped while Lena seasoned, their movements syncing naturally in the confined space. Laughter filled the air as Kaito dramatically "saved" a piece of chicken from burning.
They ate at the table, the kitten nibbling on bits of chicken in a safe corner.
Conversation flowed easily.
"What should we name her?" Lena asked, watching the kitten bat at a crumpled paper ball.
Kaito tilted his head. "Yumi? I dunno, she's your cat."
Lena smiled softly. "Yumi. I like it. I can also call her mimi for short."
After dinner came cake—a small strawberry shortcake Kaito had picked up earlier. They sang a ridiculous off-key "Happy Birthday" together, Lena blowing out the candles with a wish she kept secret.
The sugar rush afterward hit perfectly.
Lena stood up from the table, energy still buzzing. She turned on the new portable radio/speaker, scrolling until a familiar beat filled the living room: "HOT TO GO!" by Chappell Roan.
The upbeat pop filled the space, infecting Lena to move her body to the beat.
Lena started dancing immediately, singing along with unfiltered joy.
"You can take me hot to go! Hot to go!" She moved her body with the same powerful grace she brought to the mat—hips swaying, arms flowing, feet stepping lightly.
"Come on! When you dance, you gotta move that body!"
Kaito laughed, watching her for a moment before joining in.
They danced together in the living room, the space small but full of life.
Lena grabbed his hands, spinning him dramatically.
He matched her energy, adding silly flourishes that made her laugh harder.
They filmed each other—Lena capturing Kaito's awkward but very outgoing moves, Kaito recording her full-hearted performance.
The videos were chaotic, joyful, and utterly them: sweaty from the day, faces flushed, eyes bright.
Soon after though, rhe song ended.
Lena panted, hands on her knees, smiling wide. She looked up at Kaito, who stood close, also breathing hard but grinning.
Their eyes locked.
The air between them shifted slightly.
Lena's voice was soft. "Oh, fuck it. I'm twenty anyway."
She closed the distance and kissed him.
Kaito kissed her back, his hand gently cupping her face.
It was sweet.
Full of the day's joy and the slow-burn tension that had built for weeks.
The radio played softly in the background as they pulled apart, foreheads resting together, smiles lingering.
