Chapter 45 - On His Shoulder

The motorcycle came to a stop with its headlights off in the most isolated and picturesque corner of the panoramic overlook. Below them, the city stretched out like a sea of soft, warm lights, wrapped in the complicit silence of the night. The motorcycle's engine shut off with a metallic puff, slipping into an almost surreal quiet.

Cristian removed his helmet with slow movements. The cool wind dried the cold sweat on his forehead, taking away for a moment the bitter taste of the blood that had stained his hand barely half an hour earlier.

He turned toward Maia.

She was sitting on the stone wall beside him, leaning her back against the car door she had stepped out of to welcome him. She was wearing only an oversized sweatshirt, left completely open in the front, revealing the delicate shape of a black lace bra underneath. Her blue hair, slightly tousled by the night breeze, framed her face, while two small flower-shaped earrings caught the reflections of the moon.

Cristian stared at her for several seconds. In the middle of all the darkness of his life, the anger rotting inside him and the ghosts of his mother, Maia appeared to him like an incredibly pure vision.

"You're beautiful," Cristian murmured, and his voice had none of its usual swagger. It was low, warm, broken by a disarming sincerity.

Maia smiled, tilting her head to the side with that sly and provocative air that made his heart skip a beat. "I bet you say that to every girl, Frisinghelli."

Cristian let out a short, quiet laugh, running his fingers through his blond hair. "Yes. It's true, I say it to every girl I meet in clubs or on the street. But not all of them are like you, Maia. Nobody is like you. With the others it's a game... with you, I feel like I don't even have control over what I say."

Maia giggled softly, a sweet laugh that slipped into the evening air. She pulled her sweatshirt a little tighter around her chest to protect herself from the cold, but her large, attentive eyes never broke contact with his blue ones.

"You know, I study psychology," she said, gradually becoming more serious. "I spend my days studying people's behavior, their defenses, their masks. I've seen and heard all kinds of stories, but you... you're something completely different, Cristian. You're an enigma that keeps changing shape."

Cristian let out a small huff through his teeth, shaking his head as he looked toward the horizon. "In my entire life, no one has ever tried to understand me the way you do. And the scary thing is that it seems like you actually can."

"I haven't completely understood you yet, actually," she replied quietly, leaning slightly toward him. "Cristian, you're so complex, so frighteningly multifaceted that I wish I could look inside you and understand exactly what kind of person you are... But it's like trying to fish at night. You cast the hook into the deep darkness, pull the line with hope, but you never know what you're about to pull out."

Cristian remained silent, watching the city lights bustling in the distance.

"People think they're difficult, Maia," he said quietly, emphasizing every word with a mature bitterness, born from too many wounds. "But the truth is that they're strangely easy. They're just complex. They're like a book: every chapter is different from the next, every version of a person is strange in its own way. There's the chapter where you suck, the one where you save yourself, the one where you love and the one where you destroy everything. It only depends on which page the person beside you chooses to read."

Maia watched him for a long time, amazed by the painful depth this seemingly rough boy managed to bring out. She felt a warm tightness in her chest, a strange, powerful sensation that went far beyond simple attraction.

"And the chapter with your brother?" Maia asked softly, leaning a little closer. "What relationship do you really have with Cri?"

At those words, the tension in Cristian's shoulders completely melted away. The hard look in his blue eyes softened into a clear, pure light, filled with a suffering tenderness.

"I love Cri as if he were my son," Cristian began, and his voice became warm, enveloping, almost solemn. "He's not just my little brother, Maia. To me he's much more. The shitty family I've had to endure for years, the violence, the abandonment, that coldness that makes your bones shake even in summer... now he has to endure it. The hatred my mother gives him is useless, merciless, unjustified. I saw him being born, you understand? I held him in my arms when he was nothing more than a little loaf of bread crying in his crib."

Cristian stopped for a moment, swallowing the lump tightening his throat, but then continued, letting his thoughts flow without restraint.

"I was the one who changed his clothes when Mom wasn't there or got drunk in her room. I was the one who prepared food for him, gave him medicine when he had a high fever, and put myself between him and the plates flying across the kitchen. I was a father to that child before I even learned how to be a kid myself. I only want the best for him. I want him to play soccer, to smile, to love good people like that friend of his, Giacomo. I want him to have everything that was denied to me."

He lowered his gaze to his own hands, clenching his fists until his knuckles turned white. His voice cracked, becoming a rasping whisper.

"And it fucking hurts me, Maia... I'm so sorry for the way I treat him sometimes. When I come home full of anger or high, when I yell at him, when I push him away as if he were a burden... I hate looking at myself in the mirror afterward, because in those moments it feels like I'm seeing my mother in me. And I don't want to be like her. I don't want Cri to be afraid of me."

Maia listened without interrupting him. Her large eyes shimmered in the dimness, filled with genuine emotion. Seeing that tall, strong boy, feared by everyone, strip away every piece of his armor and cry over his love for his little brother finally melted her heart completely.

Slowly, without saying a single word, Maia moved closer to him. She entered his space and gently rested her head on Cristian's shoulder, sliding the fingers of her hand between his and intertwining them in a tight, secure grip. The scent of her blue hair and the soft warmth of her body pressed against his motorcycle jacket enveloped Cristian like a clean blanket.

At that exact moment, Cristian felt a shock run through his soul. It was no longer carnal need or the search for a moment of distraction: it was the clear, unmistakable feeling of falling. Of having fallen madly in love with that girl who, without asking anything in return, was healing his wounds simply by staying there.

And Maia, feeling Cristian's accelerated and powerful heartbeat against her cheek, realized that she was feeling the exact same thing. She was in love with that broken "Wonderkid," with that boy who desperately tried to save the world just so he would not have to admit that he needed to be saved himself.

"You can always change, Cristian," Maia murmured against his shoulder, her voice a subtle and unbreakable promise. "You're not your mother. You're not your past. You can be a better person... for yourself, and for him."

Cristian closed his eyes, gently resting his chin on top of her blue hair. He breathed deeply, savoring the certainty of finally being understood, accepted and loved.

"I want to do it," Cristian said with unwavering determination, feeling Maia's hand tightly holding his. "I'm going to stop being like this. I threw the stuff away tonight. Enough with the fists, enough with the smoke, enough with the monster. I want to build something real."

Maia smiled in the darkness, holding herself a little tighter against his chest, letting their breaths merge in the darkness of the panoramic night.

"You will," she said softly, gently kissing the skin of his neck. "You will, Cristian."
