Chapter 44 - Chapter 44 Heat

"My, my, Ash certainly is popular, isn't he?"

Just as Ash was enjoying the impactful presence of the two beauties flanking him, a familiar voice drifted over. Ash looked toward the source and his face lit up.

"Professor Oak! Mom! Daisy! And Meowth! You're all here?"

"Yo, Boss! Mission accomplished!" Meowth looked like he was in high spirits. Daisy stepped forward alongside him, handing a Heavy Ball back to Ash.

"Dragonite is all cleared for duty now," She said with a warm smile. "He's healthy and ready to stay by your side."

"Thanks, Daisy But Mom... how did you guys get here so fast?"

In response to Ash's confusion, Professor Oak pointed to another massive, gleaming luxury liner docked nearby. "We took your other ship, the Going Merry, of course! I must say, Ash, your ships are incredible. Every person and Pokémon on board looked like they were having the time of their lives."

"Ha, that's good to hear. That was always the goal," Ash replied, feeling a sense of pride.

While Ash was catching up with the newcomers, Elesa and Cynthia were busy introducing themselves to Delia and Daisy.

"Hello, Mother! I'm Elesa/Cynthia!" They said in unison.

"..."

Elesa snapped her head toward the Sinnoh Champion. "Cynthia! Don't just go adding yourself to the family tree without permission!"

"I'm just going to ask Ash for my Sundae now," Cynthia replied airily, ignoring the protest.

Watching them, Delia chuckled softly. "They're such lovely girls. It's almost a pity they have to marry Ash."

"Um, mother... about Cynthia... she and Ash don't actually have that kind of relationship yet..." Elesa tried to clarify.

"Oh? They don't?"

Just as Delia looked surprised, Cynthia put on a look of profound heartbreak. "Really? After Ash and I have already met each other with total sincerity?"

"WHAT?!" The exclamation erupted from everyone in the vicinity. Elesa and Daisy immediately clamped their hands onto Ash's shoulders, their grips tightening with a strength that suggested hidden martial arts training.

"Ash... care to explain?" They asked, their voices dropping an octave.

Ash's eyes darted around frantically. "Look! You know I was in Sinnoh to find rare medicine, right? Cynthia and I were up in the mountains when a massive blizzard hit. She ended up catching a terrible fever and hypothermia while we were stuck in a cave. At the time, I didn't have a Fire-type like Growlithe to keep us warm, and her clothes were soaked with snow. If I hadn't taken them off to dry and... well, rubbed her down with warming herbs and used my own body heat to keep her stable, she wouldn't have made it!"

Ash's voice got smaller and smaller as he finished, while Cynthia added a helpful supplement: "He also used traditional medicine to massage my body and used himself as a human heater."

The pressure on Ash's shoulders increased.

"So... what she's saying is true?" Elesa asked.

"YES! FINE! DO YOUR WORST!" Ash shouted, throwing caution to the wind. He prepared himself for the inevitable domestic violence.

However, to his surprise, Elesa and Daisy both let out a small laugh and released him.

"Alright, we're done teasing you," Elesa said, linking her arm with his. "We know you were just saving her life. We can understand that."

Daisy, however, looked a bit more serious. "But Ash, you realize that by doing that, you did take a responsibility on yourself. You need to give her a proper answer eventually."

"I never said I wouldn't," Ash muttered. "But it depends on what Cynthia wants... besides, her grandmother looks at me like she wants to bury me in a prehistoric fossil pit."

"My grandmother only looks at you like that because she knows what happened," Cynthia explained calmly. "Her feelings toward you are... complicated."

Professor Carolina knew very well that her granddaughter and Ash had basically skipped several bases during that blizzard, which explained why she hadn't overreacted when Ash continued to look after her later.

"Alright, alright! Since everything is out in the open, let's get to the beach!" Oak interrupted, skillfully providing Ash with an escape route. "The coastline of Porta Vista is world-famous for a reason."

Ash shot a look of pure gratitude at the Professor. 'Thanks, Grandpa!'

Oak winked back. 'Don't mention it!'

"Oh! That's right!" Elesa's eyes sparkled. "Ash, you have to see the new swimsuits we bought. Let's head to your hotel and check in!"

The mention of new swimsuits made Ash's nose feel a bit warm.

"Right! Excellent idea! Everyone, let's head to the Continental Hotel for check-in, and then—straight to the beach!"
