Not what the body reaches for when it wakes from fear. The body in those moments expects hard ground or cold stone or the familiar inadequacy of whatever the exile years had most recently provided.
Not this.
Second —
Movement.
A rocking. Rhythmic. Patient. The movement of something that was larger than a person but smaller than the world, something that breathed with the particular respiration of —

She was on water.
Third —
Memory.
It came back not all at once but in a sequence that was almost orderly, the mind presenting the events in the order they had occurred as though helpfulness were available even in moments of crisis —
The room in Illyrio's manse. The window with its view of Pentos's rooftops. The thin blanket. Sleep that had come eventually because sleep always came eventually regardless of what waited on the other side of it.
And then —
A figure in the doorway.
The room too dark to see clearly. Her breath drawn for the shout —
Blank.
Nothing after that.
Just —

And then here.

**Daenerys Targaryen** opened her eyes.
The ceiling above her was wood — ship's timber, dark and curved, the ceiling of a vessel's below-decks, lower than she would have liked, the space intimate in the way of spaces designed for function rather than comfort. A single lantern hung from the beam above her, its light moving slightly with the ship's movement, throwing the small cabin into warm amber relief.
She lay very still.
She breathed.
She performed the inventory that exile had taught her to perform upon waking in any unfamiliar place —
*Where are the exits?*
One door. Closed. To her left.
*What can she hear?*
The sea. The ship's timbers. Voices above, distant, the sound of men working. Wind.
*Is anyone in the room?*
She turned her head.
No.
She was alone.

She sat up slowly.
Her body felt — unexpectedly unharmed. This was also unexpected. She knew, in the abstract, theoretical way that anyone who had grown up in the company of Viserys Targaryen knew, that the world was full of men who took things and called the taking by other names, and she had expected, coming back to consciousness in an unknown place after an unknown man had done an unknown thing to her —
She had expected worse than this.
A clean blanket. A pillow. The lantern burning with consideration rather than necessity — it was not needed for the cabin to be functional, it was burning because someone had decided the person in this cabin should not wake in darkness.
She sat with the blanket around her shoulders and she looked at the door and she waited.
The ship moved beneath her with the slow, considered rhythm of the open sea.

He was —
She had the impression of him from the room in the manse — a shape in the doorway, height and presence and the quality of someone who moved through space with complete certainty of his right to occupy it — but the darkness of the room had made detail impossible.
Here, in the lantern light, she saw him clearly for the first time.
Tall. Dark-haired, with the kind of face that had been shaped by weather and thought in equal proportion — not beautiful in the elaborate, finished way of men who spent effort on the appearance of beauty, but with a quality of structure that made beauty beside the point, the bones of him carrying an authority that would still be there when the surface had changed. Dark eyes that were doing what she recognized — instantly, in the way of someone who had spent her entire life being evaluated and had learned to read the evaluation — the thing that some people's eyes did when they were watching her and also thinking, the two activities proceeding simultaneously without interference.
He looked at her the way you look at something you are relieved to see in good condition.
He said —
*"You're awake."*
Not a question. Just the stating of a true thing.

Daenerys pulled the blanket tighter.
Not for warmth — the cabin was warm enough — but for the same reason that people hold things when they are afraid and do not wish to show that they are afraid. The comfort of something in the hands. The occupation of the body while the mind worked.
She was afraid.
She had been afraid, in various gradations and textures, for most of her conscious life, and she had learned to work inside fear the way a person learns to work in poor light — not the same as working in good light, not without the strain of it, but functional, useful, real.
She looked at this man who had taken her from Illyrio's manse in the third hour of the night and brought her to a ship on the Narrow Sea and put her in a cabin with a blanket and a pillow and a lantern —
And she was afraid.
And she looked at him directly anyway.
*"Don't worry,"* he said. He moved into the cabin — not toward her, not the crowding movement of someone asserting physical dominance, but to the chair on the opposite side of the small table, the maximum available distance. He sat. *"I won't hurt you."*
She studied him.
She had learned — over years of watching Viserys, of watching Illyrio, of watching all the men who had moved around her and her brother with their various agendas and their carefully managed presentations — to look at what people showed rather than listening to what they said, because what they showed was harder to manage and therefore more reliable.
He showed —
Tiredness. Real tiredness, the kind that sat in the eyes and the set of the shoulders, the tiredness of someone who had been doing something difficult and was now in the part that comes after the difficult thing.
And something else.
Something that she could not quite name — not guilt, not precisely, but the cousin of guilt, the expression of a man who has done something he judged necessary and is willing to be honest about the cost of the necessity.
*"Then why,"* she said, and her voice was steadier than she had expected it to be, *"did you take me?"*

Just actually looking, the way people look at each other when what they are about to say is real and they want to be sure they are saying it to the real person rather than to their idea of the person.
*"Because,"* he said, *"if I hadn't — your brother was going to sell you."*
The word.
*Sell.*
Not *wed.* Not *arrange.* Not any of the softened vocabularies that had surrounded the marriage negotiations in the manse, the careful language of alliance and provision and Viserys's destiny —
*Sell.*
Daenerys looked at the table between them.
She looked at it for a long time.
*"To Khal Drogo,"* she said.
*"Yes."*
*"In exchange for —"*
*"Forty thousand Dothraki screamers,"* the man said. *"The khalasaar of the greatest khal in the Dothraki world. The army your brother has been trying to purchase since before either of us was born."* A pause. *"An army to take back the Iron Throne."*
She looked up.
*"You knew."*
*"Yes."*
*"How long?"*
*"Long enough,"* he said. *"Long enough to come here before Drogo arrived."*
She looked at him.
At this man who had come to a foreign city with this specific knowledge and had acted on it in this specific way.
*"You could have simply told someone,"* she said. *"Robert Baratheon. The Small Council. There are people who would have —"*
*"Sent assassins,"* he said, simply. *"Yes. Robert has been sending assassins for years. They haven't been particularly effective, but they've been consistent."* He held her eyes. *"I didn't come here to help someone kill you."*
The words landed with the particular weight of things that are both true and important.
She was quiet.
The ship breathed around them.
*"What do you want?"* she asked.
And then —
*"You don't know me,"* she said, before he could answer. *"You came all this way, did all of this — for someone you don't know."*
Something moved in his face.
Not amusement. Something more careful than amusement.
*"I know more about you than you might expect,"* he said. *"But you're right that we haven't met. My name is Michel Arryn. Lord of the Eyrie. Warden of the East."*
The name.
She turned it over.
*Arryn.* The Eyrie. She knew the names — had been taught them, all the great houses of Westeros, the homework of exile, the names of the people who held what had once been hers. Arryn was the Vale. Ancient blood. One of the first to rebel against her father.
*"Your house rebelled against my father,"* she said.
*"Yes."*
*"Why?"* The question direct, honest, the question of someone who wants the real answer rather than the diplomatic one.
He looked at her.
*"Because your father was mad,"* he said.
The word.
*Mad.*
Not *troubled.* Not *unwell.* Not the careful, softened language that people used when they were hedging against the possibility that she might not want to hear it.
*Mad.*
She had heard this before. From Viserys, occasionally, in his worst moments when the bitterness came up through whatever suppression he usually maintained — blaming their father's legacy for every difficulty, cursing the madness while refusing to see its reflection in himself. From Illyrio, in the oblique, careful way that men like Illyrio communicated things they did not want to be accountable for having said.
But not like this.
Not with this directness. Not from someone who was looking at her while he said it, who was saying it to her face with the clear expectation that she could receive it without collapsing, with the respect of honest truth rather than the condescension of managed truth.
*"He burned people,"* Michel said. *"When his anger took him. For slights that were not slights. For words misheard or imagined. He burned them alive in the throne room of the castle that his ancestors built and he sat in their ashes and called it justice."* A pause. *"Your brother Rhaegar was — different. He had his father's fire but not his father's sickness. He might have been —"* a fractional pause *"— extraordinary. But he is gone. And your brother Viserys —"*
He stopped himself.
She looked at him.
*"Say it,"* she said quietly.
*"Has your father's sickness,"* he said. *"Without your father's occasional intervals of clarity."*
The silence after this was long.
She looked at the table.
She looked at her hands.
She thought about all the things she had been not-thinking for years — the things she had stored in the deep places because looking at them directly was not compatible with surviving the situation she was in. The way Viserys's hands felt. The things he said to her when he was afraid and turned the fear into cruelty because cruelty was the only direction he knew to send things.
*You are nothing,* she heard in her memory. *You are the means to my return. You are what I am selling to get what I need.*
She had known.
She had always known.
*"What happens now?"* she asked. *"What do you want from me?"*

The tiredness still in him but beneath it — something steady, the steadiness of a man who has thought about this conversation for a long time and is giving it what it requires.
*"Come to the Eyrie,"* he said. *"Come north — to the Vale, to my castle. It is —"* he seemed to search for the right description *"— safe. Genuinely, specifically safe. High in the mountains. No Lannister reach. No Small Council's long arm. No one who will see you as a transaction or an opportunity or a problem to be managed."*
*"And what will they see me as?"* she asked.
*"A person,"* he said. *"To begin with. And after that — whatever you become. That part is yours to decide."*
She looked at him.
*"There are other people there,"* he continued. *"A young woman — Lady Sansa Stark, my betrothed. She is — you would not be alone. There are books. There is time."* He said this last word with a particular care, as though he understood that time was the thing she had never had and knew it was the thing she most needed. *"Time to learn what you want. What you are. Time to understand who you could be before the world decides for you."*
She was quiet for a long time.
The ship moved beneath them.
The lantern swayed.
*"You will learn the household,"* he continued. *"The management of it. The business of running a great castle. Things that —"* a pause *"— things that a queen should know if she is going to be a queen who actually governs rather than one who merely sits a throne."*
The word.
*Queen.*
He had said it with the same flatness he said everything — not as bait, not as a promise, not as the kind of manipulation that had surrounded her entire life. Just as — a fact. As something that might be true, treated with the seriousness that true things deserved.
*"You could have taken me to Robert,"* she said. *"Handed me over. Bought yourself enormous favor."*
*"Yes,"* he said.
*"But you didn't."*
*"No."*
*"Why not?"*
He looked at her across the table.
*"Because Robert would have killed you,"* he said. *"And killing you would have been wrong. And I don't do things that are wrong because they're convenient."* A pause. *"Even when they're very convenient."*
She held his gaze.
She thought about the life she had been living. The rooms she had been placed in. The brother whose hands she had learned to read. The wedding that had been arranged for her the way you arrange furniture — without her participation, without the possibility of her participation being considered.
She thought about the Eyrie. Mountains. A library. A girl named Sansa.
*Time.*
She thought about time.
Then —
*"You said I could become whatever I chose,"* she said.
*"Yes."*
*"You mean that."*
*"I don't say things I don't mean."*
She looked at him for a moment — the steady dark eyes, the tired honest face, the man who had come to a foreign city with a plan and a satchel and twenty trusted guards and had taken her from the life that was closing around her like a hand —
She nodded.
Once. Slowly.
The nod of someone making a decision rather than accepting one.
*"All right,"* she said.

The gesture unhurried — not producing a weapon, not reaching for anything alarming, the movement of someone retrieving something specific and small that he had been carrying with a specific purpose.
He set it on the table between them.
A small glass vial.
The liquid inside it was deep, almost black in the lantern light — the colour of night sky at the edge of dawn, the colour of something between blue and darkness.
*"What is that,"* she said.
*"A dye,"* he said. *"For your hair."*
She looked at the vial.
She looked at him.
*"Your hair,"* he said, carefully, *"is distinctive. In a way that makes you recognizable at a distance in a way that is currently — disadvantageous."*
She understood.
The silver. The silver-gold that was entirely, unmistakably, categorically *Targaryen* — that had been recognizable for three hundred years, that appeared in every portrait, that every person in the Seven Kingdoms who had ever seen a painting of the old dynasty would identify instantly, that announced what she was before she opened her mouth.
*"Black,"* he said. *"It won't be permanent. It fades in — three months, perhaps four. Long enough for the immediate situation to resolve itself into something less immediately dangerous."*
She looked at the vial.
She thought about her hair.
It was perhaps the one thing in her life that had consistently been hers — the hair that her mother had had, that the Targaryen women in all the old portraits had had, that Viserys had touched sometimes with a possessiveness that made her skin cold, the hair that even in exile had been the one visible, undeniable proof of what she was —
She thought about Viserys's hands.
She picked up the vial.
She turned it between her fingers.
The liquid moved inside it — slow, dense, dark.
*"When I come back to myself,"* she said quietly, not looking at him, looking at the vial. *"When the months have passed and it fades — I come back."*
*"Yes,"* he said.
*"My name. My house. What I am."*
*"Yes,"* he said. *"All of it."*
She looked up.
Their eyes met across the table — across the small, swaying, lantern-lit space of the cabin, across the Narrow Sea that was carrying them both toward a shore that was Westeros and everything Westeros meant —
She saw in his eyes what she had been looking for.
Not performance. Not calculation performing itself as honesty. Not the managed warmth of a man trying to produce a specific response.
Just — truth.
Expensive truth. The kind that cost something to tell.
She held the vial.
*"Daenerys Targaryen,"* she said, quietly. To herself as much as to him. The name placed carefully in the air between them — not as identity worn but as identity held, as something that was hers and would remain hers regardless of what colour her hair was.
*"Daenerys Targaryen,"* he confirmed. Equally quiet. Equally serious.
She looked at the vial one last time.
Then she closed her hand around it.
*"Thank you,"* she said.
He looked at her.
*"Don't thank me yet,"* he said. *"Thank me when we reach the Eyrie and you've decided whether you agree with what I did."*
Something moved across her face.
Almost a smile.
The first one.
Small. Tentative. The smile of something that had been buried under a long weight of fear and difficulty and had just found, unexpectedly, a crack in the surface through which light was coming.
*"That's honest,"* she said.
*"I try to be,"* he said.
He rose.
*"Rest,"* he said. *"We have eleven days on the water. There's time for everything — the questions, the explanations, the things you're going to want to know."* He moved to the door. *"There's time."*
*Time.*
The word again. Said with the same care.
He understood, she realized, what it meant to her. Had understood it when he'd said it before and understood it now.
She looked at the vial in her hand.
She looked at the door closing behind him.
She looked at the lantern — its warm amber light, its patient swaying with the ship's movement, its small faithful refusal to go out.
She breathed.
The sea moved beneath the ship.
Westeros was ahead of them — everything it was, everything it held, everything that waited there for a girl with silver hair who was currently deciding what colour to be while the world arranged itself around choices she had not yet made.
She reached up.
Touched her hair.
The silver-gold of it. Her mother's colour. Her grandmother's colour. Three hundred years of Targaryen women's hair, the colour of moonlight, the colour of the dynasty —
She breathed.
*It will come back,* she told herself.
*It's still there underneath.*
*It will always be there underneath.*
She looked at the vial.
She uncorked it.
And in the swaying lantern-light of a ship on the Narrow Sea, the last Targaryen princess began the careful, deliberate, chosen act of making herself invisible —
Not because she was afraid.
Not because she had no other choice.
But because she had decided.
And deciding —
For the first time in her fifteen years —
Had been hers to do.
