"Jiggly… Jiggly…"
Sure enough, a round pink Jigglypuff was sitting on a tree stump, sighing sadly.
"So cute!"
Misty hurried over, her heart practically melting at the sight.
"Jiggly~"
Jigglypuff sniffled softly, its body trembling as tears silently slid down its cheeks.
Its throat had developed a problem—it couldn't sing anymore.
It really looks like a little rice dumpling… Ash thought as he stared at the small tuft of hair on Jigglypuff's head, suddenly feeling the urge to mess it up.
"Don't cry, little Jigglypuff. What's wrong?" Misty asked sympathetically. How could anyone bear to see such an adorable Pokémon crying?
"It probably can't sing," Brock guessed, judging from Jigglypuff's behavior.
Jigglypuff nodded, crying even harder—then suddenly jumped straight into Ash's arms.
"????"
Hey, hey! I was the one comforting you!
Shouldn't you be jumping into my arms instead? Misty stared at the sobbing Jigglypuff in Ash's arms with a defeated look.
Do Pokémon really like Ash that much…?
"We should take it to the Pokémon Center," Brock suggested. "Nurse Joy might be able to help."
"No need."
"There, there, stop crying." Ash gently patted the tuft of hair on Jigglypuff's head.
"Eat this Berry. It'll fix your voice."
Ash took out a freshly picked Berry—it was something he had specifically prepared for Jigglypuff.
So it was for Jigglypuff.
Misty had thought Ash had simply gone off to pick Berries because he was hungry.
"Jiggly~"
Jigglypuff took a bite of the Berry and immediately brightened. Whether its voice had recovered yet or not, it clearly loved the taste.
After eating two Berries, a refreshing coolness spread through its throat.
Finally—it could sing again.
Jigglypuff looked at Ash with gratitude. Its throat problem had troubled it for a long time, and it was thankful that this Trainer had helped.
"Haha. Want to travel with me?" Ash asked, lifting Jigglypuff up.
Even if I didn't catch you, you'd probably follow us around anyway. Might as well officially add you to the team.
"Jiggly~!" Jigglypuff nodded happily.
You fixed my voice—whatever you say!
"Jigglypuff, sing something for us!" Misty said excitedly as she looked at the adorable Pokémon.
Everyone, brace yourselves—don't let it sing!
Ash knew that if he listened to Jigglypuff's song, he might fall asleep and end up getting his face scribbled on with a marker.
Better take precautions.
While everyone's attention was focused on Jigglypuff, Ash secretly grabbed Pikachu.
"Pikachu, give me a little Thunder Shock."
He needed to stay awake through Jigglypuff's singing—he absolutely could not fall asleep.
When Jigglypuff finished its song, it discovered that Ash was the only one still awake.
In truth, Ash wasn't immune to Jigglypuff's song at all. He felt sleepy too.
But he was holding Pikachu's tail and letting Pikachu zap him with small bursts of electricity every now and then.
"Jiggly~!"
Jigglypuff immediately jumped into Ash's arms again.
This was the first time it had ever met someone who didn't fall asleep while listening to its singing.
At last—it had found a true listener.
Jigglypuff happily entered Ash's Poké Ball on its own.

Sing

If Jigglypuff's level were raised higher, using Sing first could actually be very effective.
And if he ever got an Ability Patch, he might consider changing Jigglypuff's Ability.
Friend Guard could reduce the damage taken by teammates by a quarter. As a support ability, it was currently one of the best.
Now that he had found Jigglypuff, Ash didn't forget about the problem with the aggressive residents of Neon Town.
First, he found the hot-tempered guy who had targeted him the night before.
He had Jigglypuff sing to put the man to sleep, then had Pikachu wake him up with Thunder Shock.
After repeating the process a few times, Ash finally let the man go.
Then he went to find Officer Jenny and told her he had found a solution to the town's problem.
Have all the residents listen to a broadcast—
—and let Jigglypuff sing them to sleep.
Honestly, if they kept going without sleep like that, weren't they afraid of dropping dead from exhaustion?
After finishing everything, Ash reorganized his team:
Pikachu
Charmeleon
Dratini
Jigglypuff
Tauros
Muk
Charmeleon wouldn't be sent back this time. The next battle would be its chance to shine.
As for Wartortle and Bulbasaur, they were sent back to Professor Oak's Laboratory to train with Gyarados and the others.
The Pokémon he was carrying now were mostly lower-level and needed hands-on training.
"Ash, could you leave Jigglypuff here?" Officer Jenny asked.
"It's quiet now, but what if things go back to the way they were later?"
"Take this," Ash said.
He had already thought of that possibility and recorded Jigglypuff's singing earlier. The effect might not be as strong as hearing it live, but it would be enough.
"Thank you very much," Officer Jenny said gratefully.

"Misty," Brock suddenly asked, "why do Pokémon like you so much, Ash?"
On Ash's shoulders sat Jigglypuff on the left and Pikachu on the right, both incredibly cute Pokémon.
Misty felt extremely unbalanced—especially when she thought about her Psyduck.
"Really? You're pretty popular with Pokémon too," Ash replied after thinking for a moment. "For example… Psyduck clearly likes you a lot."
Ash's first Pokémon was Pikachu, and their friendship was already maxed out.
As for Jigglypuff, in the original story it had also grown very fond of Ash and his friends.
This Jigglypuff followed Ash's group for quite a long time. In the original series, it actually had one of the highest appearance rates, constantly popping up to remind everyone of its existence.
It followed Ash throughout the Kanto region, the Orange Islands, and even the Johto region.
Then it made another appearance during the Advanced Generation era before disappearing for a long time.
It later returned again during the Sun & Moon series, appearing in quite a few episodes.
In the end, it even hid under a seat in the airplane carrying Ash and flew back to Kanto.
From Kanto to Alola and then back to Kanto again—their connection really was something special.
So Ash decided to bring Jigglypuff along on the journey.
Besides, Jigglypuff would soon have another moment to shine.
But the real star of the upcoming event would be Charmeleon.
If things went like the original storyline, it might get so furious with Aerodactyl that it would evolve.
