Chapter 6 - Hearthstone Bakery

The deeper Ki and Demi walked into Tetherwind, the more the town revealed itself in layers.

The main road gradually branched into smaller pathways, each paved with smooth, pale stones that seemed almost too perfect to be natural. Thin glowing lines ran faintly between some of the stones, forming subtle patterns that pulsed with a dim bluish light. Ki noticed that carts and pedestrians naturally followed these paths as if the streets themselves were gently guiding the flow of the town.

Magic infrastructure, she realized. It was built into everyday life.

On either side of the pathways, greenery softened the stone-heavy streets. Small trees grew from carefully shaped beds of soil between buildings, their leaves rustling softly in the afternoon breeze. Flowering vines climbed wooden balconies, spilling bright colors down the sides of houses. Some plants even glowed faintly, their petals shimmering with gentle light that would probably illuminate the streets once night fell.

Large windmills lazily spun around the town generating magical energy for use. It felt less like a city carved out of nature and more like a town that had grown with it. Ki found herself slowing down again, quietly absorbing everything around her.

There was movement everywhere, but it flowed smoothly. The glowing pathways, the spacing of buildings, even the placement of trees seemed almost intentionally designed to keep the town breathing.

Beside her, Demi walked with an easy, carefree rhythm, occasionally peeking into shop windows or watching the townspeople pass by.

Ki glanced sideways at her. "You seem very comfortable here," she said.

Demi looked up, pretending to consider the statement.

Ki didn't bother asking further. Instead, her attention drifted back to the surroundings. Market stalls appeared and disappeared as the streets curved, their colorful canopies shifting in the breeze. One vendor sold strange fruits that glowed like tiny lanterns, stacked carefully in wooden crates. Another stall displayed bottles filled with sparkling potions that swirled inside the glass as though tiny storms were trapped within them.

Magic truly was everywhere here.

After a few minutes of quiet walking, Demi suddenly glanced at Ki again. "What was your world like?"

The question caught Ki slightly off guard.

She thought about it for a moment while they continued down the stone path, their footsteps echoing softly between the buildings.

"My world…" she repeated slowly.

It felt strange talking about Earth now. Like describing a distant memory rather than a place she had lived her entire life.

"We didn't have magic," she explained.

Demi tilted her head curiously. "Then how did humans do anything?"

"Technology," Ki said.

Demi frowned slightly. "Techno.. what?."

They passed beneath a wooden archway covered in hanging flowers, the petals brushing lightly in the wind as townspeople walked beneath it.

Ki gestured as she spoke vaguely.

"In my world, we built massive cities. Towers taller than mountains sometimes. Roads that stretched for thousands of miles. Vehicles that could travel faster than birds."

Demi slowed her steps. "…How many people lived in these cities?"

Ki shrugged. "Millions."

"That sounds chaotic." Demi said.

Ki laughed quietly. "It was."

They continued walking again, though Demi now seemed slightly more thoughtful.

The street widened ahead of them, opening into a larger square where the sounds of loud conversation and laughter carried through the air. Ki was unsure about how Demi thought this place was a village.

Then, Ki noticed a building.

It stood larger than most others nearby, built from thick wooden beams and reinforced stone walls. A massive sign hung above the entrance, carved with the symbol of crossed swords over a circular crest.

Outside the building stood a handful of rough looking individuals.

One man wore heavy armor and rested a massive axe over his shoulder like it weighed nothing. Another leaned against the wall with a long staff covered in faintly glowing runes. A third dragged the body of a strange beast across the stone street. The creature had thick purple fur and far too many legs to count comfortably.

Ki slowed down. Her eyes followed the trail the creature left behind on the stone. "…What is that place?"

Demi glanced toward the building and answered immediately.

"Oh.. That? That's the Adventurers Guild."

Ki turned toward her. "The what?"

Demi pointed casually at the structure. "The Adventurers Guild," she explained. "Individuals who specialize in fighting monsters and exploring dangerous places gather there."

Ki looked back at the armored adventurers outside the building. One of them kicked the guild door open while laughing loudly with the others.

Ki rubbed the side of her forehead. "Why would anyone choose to do that as a job?"

Demi answered plainly. "Money."

Ki paused. "…Fair."

Demi continued walking while casually explaining more.

"Adventurers take requests from the guild. Hunting monsters, protecting merchants, exploring ruins, investigating magical disturbances."

Ki listened while watching the guild building fade behind them.

Apparently this world had an entire profession dedicated to doing extremely dangerous things.

"Adventurers are also ranked," Demi added.

Ki looked at her again.

Demi began counting on her fingers. "They start at Bronze. Then Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Adamantine. At least… that's how I remember it from when I last cared enough to check."

She paused for effect.

"And then, finally Mithril. Although only legendary individuals such as the party of heroes and a handful others reached that milestone. Im not sure if anyone alive still has that rank"

Ki blinked, slowly soaking all information in.

Ki glanced back once more toward the guild square. The man dragging the monster earlier was now arguing loudly with someone while two others laughed nearby.

"…I'm going to stay very far away from that building."

Demi giggled softly. "With you being a spirit host, you might end up involved with them anyway."

"I'd rather not", Ki scoffed

Demi didn't reply. She just giggled again and continued walking.

They wandered on, drifting through quieter side streets where the noise of the markets faded into a calmer rhythm. The magical stone pathways curved between houses covered in ivy, while small gardens bloomed along the edges of the roads.

Ki was just beginning to wonder about the beauty of this place when something caught her attention.

A smell. Warm and sweet.

Her steps slowed. Demi's nose twitched slightly.

Both of them turned their heads in the same direction. At the corner of the street stood a cozy little shop built from warm wooden beams and soft golden stone. A sign hung above the door illuminated with magic circuits coming in, decorated with a swirl of frosting over a small pastry.

The large window beneath it displayed trays of golden bread, glazed pastries, and colorful sweets arranged neatly in rows. Soft light glowed from inside the shop.

The scent of sugar drifted through the open air like a quiet invitation.

Ki smiled faintly. "Well," she said, "looks like we found it."

Demi didn't even try to hide her excitement. She was already halfway through the door.

............

The bell above the door chimed softly as it swung open.

A warm wave of air greeted Ki instantly. A comforting warmth, the kind that wrapped around you and refused to let go. The scent hit her next. Sugar, butter, fresh bread, something caramelized and something fruity. It was overwhelming in the best possible way.

Ki froze just inside the doorway.

"…Okay," she muttered under her breath. "This place is basically a warzone for diabetics."

Beside her, Demi yelled. "HEY! HUMAN! LOOK AT THIS!"

Ki sighed as she stepped further inside.

Inside stood a beautiful curved glass display and counter. All sorts of breads, cakes and other sweet goods were kept in it, gracefully arranged to catch the beholders attention.

Behind the counter however, stood a beautiful woman.

She looked to be in her early thirties, She had Amber eyes with warm brown hair tied into a loose braid. A wide-brimmed hat, reminiscent of a witch, rested lightly on her head, casting a soft shadow over her features. There was a calm, mature aura about her, yet it felt like something faintly mysterious lingered beneath it. She looked warm… and strikingly beautiful. Her sleeves were rolled up, lightly dusted with flour, and a faint orange glow traced along the bracelets on her wrist, tiny runes pulsing as she worked.

She looked up when the bell rang.

Her eyes landed on Demi first.

"Oh my, what an adorable little child," the woman said softly.

Ki could see the look on Demi's face change as soon as the woman uttered those words

" I AM NOT A CHILD! HOW DAR-"

Ki quickly covered her mouth before she could say something rude, as Demi began throwing her hands in the air.

"Wait, Demi. Wait! Remember, we're here for sweets. Calm down. Calm down."

The woman chuckled, covering her mouth with flour-dusted hands. Her voice, as soft as the bread she made. " My my! Quite the energetic duo you two are"

"Sorry about that. She gets quite feisty sometimes" Ki said to the woman. She couldn't help but remember the divine death beam aimed at her not too long ago.

Behind her, Demi struggled for a moment under Ki's hand before finally calming down, though the offended pout on her face remained.

Ki slowly let go.

Demi crossed her arms, lifting her chin. "Hmph."

The woman watched the entire exchange with quiet amusement, her eyes soft.

"Well," she said gently, "that was certainly… lively." She placed her hands on the counter, leaning forward slightly.

"Welcome to Hearthstone Bakery. My name is Marble."

Her voice was smooth and warm, carrying a natural elegance that made even simple words feel refined.

"And what can I do for you two?"

Demi didn't hesitate for even a second, " Sweets! We want sweets"

" She wants candies", Ki added

Marble chuckled softly, the sound low and pleasant.

"Well," she said, tilting her head slightly, "while we do make confections from time to time, our specialty lies more in baked goods."

Demi blinked. "…Baked… goods?"

Ki leaned closer and whispered, "Bread. Cakes. Stuff like that."

Demi gasped softly, as if Ki had just revealed something sacred. "…Cakes?"

Ki immediately regretted saying that.

Demi slowly turned toward the display case.

And then…..

She was gone. Ki didn't even see her move.

A second later, Demi was pressed against the glass display, her cheeks squished flat as she stared inside with sparkling eyes.

Marble watched, clearly entertained. "You've brought quite the interesting companion," she said.

Ki gave a tired smile, slightly scratching her cheek with her finger.

"Yeaaaa…..."

She straightened quickly. "Anyway… I'm Ki. And that over there," she gestured toward the glass, "is Demi."

Demi raised a hand without turning around.

"We are Demeter," she corrected proudly, her voice muffled against the glass.

Ki didn't even bother responding.

Marble's lips curved into a knowing smile. "A pleasure," she said.

Ki nodded, then got to the point.

"We were actually hoping to get some ingredients," she explained. "Just a few"

Marble raised an eyebrow slightly. "Ingredients?"

Ki nodded. "Yeah. I… make sweets. Or at least, I used to. I wanted to try making something here."

Marble studied her for a moment, her gaze thoughtful. "I see."

She tapped a finger lightly against the counter.

"Well, we don't typically sell raw ingredients," she said calmly. "This is a bakery, after all, not a marketplace."

Ki's shoulders dropped slightly.

Of course it wasn't going to be that easy.

But then.

Marble's tone shifted, just slightly warmer.

"…However," she continued, a faint smile forming, "I suppose I can make an exception this time."

Marble rested her chin lightly against her hand, studying Ki with quiet curiosity. "It so happens that I have a soft spot for interesting requests."

Ki let out a small breath.

"…But," Marble added after a brief pause, her voice smooth, "you do understand that ingredients aren't free, dear?"

Ki froze.

Right.

Of course.

Why would they be?

Her thoughts immediately spiraled.

Great. New world. No money. No idea what the currency even is.

Marble tilted her head slightly, observing her.

"…Why are you looking so pale?" she asked gently. Then her eyes narrowed just a touch, a knowing smile forming. "Don't tell me….you don't have any money?"

Ki felt a bead of sweat roll down her temple.

"I… um… well…"

If Demi finds out I can't make sweets… I'm dead. Actually dead.

She glanced sideways.

Demi was still glued to the display case, completely unaware for now.

Ki swallowed.

"…It's a bit complicated."

Marble sighed softly, though there was no real annoyance in it, only quiet amusement.

"Oh, I'm sure it is," she said. "But I'm afraid my kindness only stretches so far."

Ki's shoulders dropped.

Yeah… fair.

There was a brief silence.

"…However, I might be willing to make you an offer," Marble continued, her gaze steady and thoughtful.

Ki looked up instantly.

"If you help out in the shop for the day tomorrow," Marble said, her tone calm and measured, "I could allow you to use some ingredients."

Ki blinked. Her face lit up instantly.

"REALLY?!"

She caught herself. "Ahem- I mean…thank you. Thank you so much!"

Marble smiled faintly, clearly amused by the sudden shift in energy.

"Human," Demi called out dreamily, still staring at the pastries, "Have you finished your discussion?"

Ki turned toward her with a grin. "Oh, don't worry," she said. "We're officially in business."

"Business?" Demi repeated, finally peeling her face off the glass. She turned, blinking in confusion.

Ki clasped her hands together innocently.

"We just have to work here tomorrow in exchange for ingredients."

A pause.

Demi stared at her.

"…we, what?"

"Work," Ki repeated. "You know. Effort. Labor. The thing people do before they get rewards."

Demi's expression slowly twisted like she had just tasted something extremely bitter.

"We are a goddess," she said flatly.

"And 'WE' are broke," Ki replied just as flatly.

Another pause.

"…This is unacceptable."

Ki shrugged.

"Everyone has to work for what they want."

Demi looked between Ki… and the pastries… and then back at Ki.

"…This world is cruel," she muttered.

Ki patted her head.

Demi made a deeply offended face, like the universe itself had personally betrayed her. Then, with zero dignity, she slowly turned and pressed her face back against the glass display, cheeks squishing flat as she stared longingly at the sweets.

Behind the counter, Marble let out a soft, elegant laugh, watching the entire scene unfold with quiet amusement.
