The first simulation the Models had selected on their own, from the entire landscape of available variables, was:

Travis looked at the three vectors.
The Hollow said: "Your tells are better than most. But she's better than most at reading them."
"I know."
"Thirty-four percent in sixty days. That's approximately one-in-three that she deduces you knew about the head-popping before she told you. Which she never will, because she's been operating as a concealed Supe for years and has never told anyone." A pause with the quality of the Hollow doing math. "If she deduces it, she also deduces that you've been running an operation while sleeping with her. And then she deduces what she should do about a person who knows her secret and whose skull she can explode with a thought."
"I know," Travis said.
"The 34% needs to be lower."
"Yes."

What that meant for who she was and who she thought she was and the gap between the two.
By the time he finished, the reaction had flattened.

The Hollow said: "Now you're lying to the woman you're sleeping with about knowing she can kill you with a thought. This relationship is exactly what I ordered."
Travis said nothing.
He went to the bathroom. He ran water over his face — cold, one of the few sensory inputs that Miser's Constitution still delivered with full fidelity, the specific sharp clarity of cold water at 5 AM. He stood over the sink.
The mirror showed him the face he'd been looking at for five months. The same face it always was. Except the eyes — the eyes were slightly darker than they'd been in March, not dramatically, the kind of change that you noticed in photographs rather than in daily contact. Acquisition Sense ran its passive gold outline on everything in range, which included the mirror's reflection, which meant it was outlining Travis's own face with the faint gold that meant value, take note, this is worth something.
He'd never been in the outline before.
He looked at himself outlined in gold at 5:07 AM in a D.C. bathroom and laughed.
The sound came out wrong — more exhausted than amused, the specific quality of a response that had the shape of humor and the texture of something else. 0.3 to 0.5 incidents per week. The Archives had Keisha Walton at $1,800 on GoFundMe, which Travis had found open on his secondary monitor on Day 103 and which he checked periodically without examining why he checked periodically.
The optimal window was 18–22 days from Day 150. That put it at Day 168–172.
He had the file. He had the Bureau channel. He could send it tonight and Neuman would have it at 7 AM and the political machinery that her position existed to deploy would have it running before noon.
He looked at the optimal window estimate.
Then he opened the second simulation.

He was still reading at 6:15 AM when his phone lit up with a text from Ashley: MM is asking questions. The pattern-matching thing. Who is he talking to?
Travis stared at this for a moment.
Mother's Milk. Marvin T. Milk, Billy Butcher's moral compass, the Boy who kept the operation human by being the one who noticed things others were willing to not notice. He'd been in the background of Travis's model as a potential threat since Day 1 — not the recognition threat that Hughie represented, but the pattern-recognition threat, the man who connected dots other people left as separate points.
MM had noticed Stormfront's kill pattern.
The pattern Travis had been sitting on for weeks.
He put the phone down. He looked at the Stormfront file, sixty-three pages, the kill pattern analysis from Day 45 at the top.
MM had built it independently. Which meant the Boys now had a partial version of what Travis held complete.
Which meant the optimal window just got shorter.
Travis pulled up the Bureau secure channel and opened a new document. The Stormfront file. Not all of it — not yet — but enough. The kill pattern. The racial targeting data. The demographic analysis.
He started transferring.
